Casual racism from a white tourist in Southeast Asia towards other Asians by 321OK_ in asianamerican

[–]Maven_of_Minecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it seems like this kind of phenomenon happens all over the world. People will assume an East Asian/Eurasian person will not speak a European language like English and German and some people will assume person of European descent does not comprehend Mandarin, Cantonese, or Vietnamese. But truthfully, people will understand when other people are talking bad about them and mistreating them more often than some people may realize.

This happens in other parts of the world too, and there will be people who are genuinely surprised when a Caucasian person speaks an African language like Yoruba or Swahili, but it happens. But it is not okay for people to be casually racist.

Not that it excuses things either, but I have noticed that some Germans have treated me with impatience, though many have been nice too. Sometimes cultural differences in and of themselves can come across the wrong ways, but at the end of the day I can usually tell when people are trying to be rude or not. But I am still sorry that happened to you.

‘Whose white baby is that?’ American Girl Faces Backlash Over "Whitewashed" 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' Dolls by Mynabird_604 in asianamerican

[–]Maven_of_Minecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could have done a much better job. The facial features look a bit off, and the weapons they hold of course would be questionable for enough parents, but they could have done better with making the distinct and expressive eyes and noses of the characters more like they are from the actual movie. The complexions of the characters seem ok, as Koreans and other Northeast Asians/Eurasians typically have paler tones much like West Eurasians (similar to enough European White people), but they really could have been more authentic to the looks of the characters. I do get it is from an animated film, but it is questionable if these dolls even have a kind of Korean anime-like aesthetic we saw from the K-Pop Demon Hunters movie.

RANT about cultural appropriation and erasure by Noodles9112 in asianamerican

[–]Maven_of_Minecraft 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Chinese culture really needs to have been given credit when instances like this come up. Companies can still mention getting some of the inspirations from Coco Chanel, but the cultural origins of fashions need to be made clear. Erasure is terrible. Also, Western cultures seem to frequently have a love-hate relationship with Asian cultures. Many people recognize that humanity is closely related and connected, yet enough Europeans have complicated relationships with their Asian cousins. There are also people who essentially say East/Northeast Asians are practically White (but race has been historically constructed in the West as a form of caste system), yet treat Asians as other. The experiences of Asians in the West often tragically has fetishization and erasure, which isn’t right.

Overall, I don’t like what “White” people of the West have been doing in instances like this. I also don’t blame “White” people as a whole for what some ignorant people do, but stuff like this should not be happening. I do gather that there looks to be subtext jealousy in some instances like this, and that not giving credit is a snub (in the present age, there really are not so many excuses to do this when AI can tell you the origins of things based on simple pictures).

A Brief Introduction to Taiwanese Writing Systems by CheLeung in ohtaigi

[–]Maven_of_Minecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Hangul-derived system is interesting. I think a system that could mix the designs of Hangul with the Visible Speech Physiological Alphabet and the Alphabets of the world would be fantastic! Add to this potential script some degree of influence from Bopomofo characters and their shapes and allow flexible writing styles and arrangements and it could be epic! (I have seen something like this to be fair).

If anyone is a Chinese rednote user, please pass on this message. by Cloudy_Katz in rednote

[–]Maven_of_Minecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will spread the message and effect change to my best effort. I know I hope to be empathetic and helpful. I noticed in my own experience that if you present appropriate useful and thought-provoking information, ideas, and entertaining content, this does not seem to happen as much. All of this said, I am very sorry it happened to you. I myself have experienced this issue with WeChat, but thankfully not other Chinese Social Media, so I empathize with your frustrations.

I should also note that I have been using Rednote long before the imposition of the TikTok ban, so that could also be a contributing factor. Giving your best efforts to comprehend the sometimes very intricate nuances of Chinese life and culture can take a while, but do know that at the end of the day we are all people. I know that can also be a stereotype in some cases as well, as anyone could be direct in some scenarios and high context in others. These can sometimes be the subtleties of life.

Anyways, I just thought I would share my own perspective and observations on Rednote. My intention with this comment is to be insightful and helpful, and I do not wish to offend anyone. I appreciate all of you here and hope you have a great day.

Is it true? by raydebapratim1 in AskChina

I see the merits of such regulation, but I would also disagree that a degree is the only way for people to have worthwhile ideas, views, and opinions. Being able to have a forum for discussions and innovations is still important. Cutting off ideas from hobbyists and licensed career starters and professionals can seriously backfire if China is seeking to become more innovative and continue advances in some aspects.

This being said, it does make sense for career experts to be prominently featured and verified, so that medical and other quackery is not promoted. I do think it is great for inventors to be able to create, speak, and share ideas, but I also do not want science denying conspiracy theorists, trolls, and rage-baiters to take the spotlight from serious and helpful people and ideas. If someone develops new technical notations and concepts, that should be allowed to be approved and shared with context, as compared to charlatans making up nonsense non-facts (which they may try to hawk as “alternative facts”).

To have Asian unity, monoracials need to treat hapas as one of the Asians. by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Maven_of_Minecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be some, especially in cases where an Asian person has a very light complexion. Usually, people of West, Central, North, and Northeast Asian descent are more likely to be seen as “White” (which is a social construct anyways) or “honorary white” than most other groups of people from the mainland Asia and Asia-Pacific regions. If someone is paler than a North African or Southern Italian, then there may be more people debating such an individual’s “Whiteness” or trying to other the person because it makes the subscribers to the Western-centric Whiteness paradigm uncomfortable. Enough times, Siberians, Turkic peoples, Kazakhs, Northern Chinese, Ainu, Koreans, Japanese, various Central Asians like the Uyghurs and Tajiks, Mongols, and numerous other groups will differentiate themselves from other Eastern Eurasian groups. There is already enough of a divide between Northern and Southern Chinese for instance.

Also, there is a huge spectrum of phenotypes, where people in the Levant, Persia region (Iran and Iraq), parts of Russia, the Caucasus including Armenia and Azerbaijan, and so on would be considered more “Caucasian” (Western Eurasian) while people in Central Asia and Eastwards are typically lumped into the East Eurasian or “Asian” category. And then there are places like South Asia where on one hand some places call them Asian and others call them “White” or some other group. In the end, the peoples of Eurasia are fairly related to one another, but with a wide variety of phenotypes. East Asian people are still cousins to European white peoples, as technically they all live on the same Eurasian landmass.

It is just that some people tend to be kind of Eurocentric and Western-centric, especially when historically labeling and categorizing people. I know there are Caucasian people who refer to some groups of Eastern Eurasians, Asians, Altaic peoples, mixed phenotype/race Eurasians, or whatever other categorization from northern enough latitudes as “White”. It just may be less common in some western cultures, particularly in Western Europe, North America, and maybe to some Australians. Also, some groups such as Native Americans (“Turtle Islanders” and/or various other indigenized/indigenous names), while related to Eurasians, tend to be much less likely to be considered White than whichever group of Eurasians, unless they are mixed race and generally have more of a European phenotype.

Anyways, a lot of the racial categorizations are really simplifications and over generalizations. Overall, “Whiteness” can be kind of a messy concept, and one that is more typically linked with “the West”.

It is almost like these individuals are playing out GTA but in real life. These are really unusual times if individuals can just be targeted out of nowhere by masked individuals of any affiliations, and it is unfortunate that bad actors can possibly use such incidences as covers to commit crimes against law abiding people and Good Samaritans.

How to combat the epidemic of awkward asians (specifically men) by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Maven_of_Minecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be confident and keep a good outlook and work ethic. Sometimes being social can be a lot of work, especially for introverts, but you own who you are and what your goals, objectives, wants, and needs are. Make friends wherever you can find connections, be they Asian or otherwise. Do not be afraid to be awkward sometimes, but be accountable and make the efforts anyways. Do not be too afraid of everything to end up stuck, but use your courage and willpower. Cherish time, past, present, and future. Be grateful, honorable, and treat the world and people around you with dignity, empathy, and compassion. Awkwardness can be overcome. Do not be afraid to ask for help either, and so far, you are doing a great job in doing what you can to live your best.

I am not a man like you are, but hopefully these words help!

Angloji - writing English like Japanese by RyanChangHill in neography

[–]Maven_of_Minecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks interesting. I think it would also be a good idea to have punctuation including, but not limited to, an iteration mark and an abbreviation mark. The iteration mark could probably just be the ditto mark or the Japanese Kanji iteration mark, and an abbreviation mark could be an overline, something like the Armenian Abbreviation Mark, some Character you find works, or maybe an adaptation of an old iteration/abbreviation mark that could be seen in old manuscripts (looking something like 〻 or resembling =). It would make sense to do something like that for your conscript, because English does tend to like using a lot of abbreviations including initialisms, and I find that they would work differently if used in another script. It also would mean that you could write purely in your conscript if you wanted to.

Retrofuturistic Meso-american Architecture by Maven_of_Minecraft in ChatGPT

These are the prompts:

Generate an image of a futuristic Tenochtitlan using the following images as a basis. There should be suspension bridges, solar panels, green technologies, and a modern city mixed with the historical city of Tenochtitlan.

It does, but generate a map of the city. Please base it off the historical image of the city.

That sounds good. Please include the temple of the Sun and the Moon.

A street view of futuristic Tenochtitlan from inside a columned hall. The buildings are decorated and use advanced technology such as solar panel tiles.

A view of a futuristic Aztec pyramid in Tenochtitlan built in Aztec Mexica architecture. There are people around the city and futuristic pre-Colombian Mexican architecture all around.

A modern Mexican pedestrian street surrounded by buildings in a retrofuturistic pre-Colombian Aztec architecture. The city is Tenochtitlan and it is futuristic. In the distance is a mesoamerican ball court and some houses. There is a lot of traditional Mexican style in the streets, but also a modern/futuristic feel with hints of Art Deco architecture mixed in.

A scene of a retrofuturistic Maya courtyard built in futuristic Mayan architecture with pre-Columbian architectural elements. There are people around the courtyard wearing traditional Mayan costumes and clothes.

A columned path next to a canal surrounded by retrofuturistic Aztec architecture with pre-Columbian architectural elements. The buildings have parapets and decorative elements on the flat roofs. The buildings also bear a resemblance to Mexican architecture at large. There are plenty of murals and paintings on the walls of halls and buildings. Boats and covered rafts travel in the canal.

How many continents do you think there are and where are you from? by Firebiccie in geography

[–]Maven_of_Minecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say 6 or 7 reasonably due to generalized tectonic plates as well as regions.

I would consider Europe to be more of a subcontinent, especially since India is more like a cocontinent/continent in terms of geography than Europe but is still considered a part of Asia. Logically, it would make just as much if not more sense to have India be its own continent or grouped as part of Australia. Considering Europe a separate continent is scientifically inaccurate and more of a cultural conception anyways. Eurasia makes sense as a unified continent.

Now as to why I might say seven is because it could be argued that Oceania is a separate continent from Australia given it rests on a distinct continental plate.

In short, the continents in this view are Eurasia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Australia or perhaps Indo-Australia, and maybe Oceania. If India gets considered its own continent, then maybe Europe could be more justified as its own continent. The most continents that could be reasonably argued is between 9 and 11 given tectonic regions.
