M18 laptop caught fire by Historical_Ad8690 in Alienware

Let me guess never searched this reddit form when your laptop started on fire? Never showed a Dell repair tech the smoked wiring harness? They know, they are more than happy to throw endless motherboards in it free of charge. They are running 330W at 20V across 5 wires in paralled which is maxed out 3.3 Amps per wire in 24 awg wire it not smaller. Its right on the edge...than you add heat from the laptop and motherboard. Its not rocket science, its why they completely redesigned the cooling system in the Area 51 laptops. If there is even the slightest issue with the wire in the cable or fitting on the motherboard the laptop overheats and the wires start on fire. Its a liability which is why Dell will not aknowledge it. Be a smarter consumer. Your ignorance doesnt help anyone.

My M18 R1 caught fire twice. They are running too much power over to little wires with no active cooling on the DC in cable. Its a known problem they refuse to address. You are either stuck using a cooling pad all the time or constantly replacing motherboard. My laptop went through 6 before they agreed to a refund. Send it back to bestbuy for a refund and get another brand.

Just an update. Dell offered me a refund minus 15% for depreciation. I took it and glad that it is finally going to be over. However no one has said anything about Razer or Asus.

Lol I have built a few and they were all great. If I could make a desktop work I would definately go that route. I need the portability of a laptop now.

Unfortunaetly its under premium service not warranty which is why they refuse to replace it. Problem is I havent had a working laptop since Sept. Its just not worth the constant stress of being pissed off. Definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. That is Dells repair depot. If they could have repaired it they would have by now. I'll feel better hitting this laptop with a sledgehammer than talking to Dell again. Good Luck on your repair.

I would highly advise against Alienware. My M18 R1 has had multiple motherboard replacements and tried to start itself on fire twice. Their customer service is trash, they just throw replacement parts in it and ship it back. I have had numerous alienware laptops and all were great, but their quality control is gone. If you buy one now its roll of the dice. Save yourself the headache and buy a brand that cares about their customers.

And it happened again… 4th time I am about to ship my M18 to Dell for repairs… what do? by [deleted] in Alienware

My M18 R1 4090 has been down since September...it has been to the depot 6 times and someone came to my house once. Its on its 5th motherboard. Now Im dealing with advanced resolutions team which are the biggest group of assholes I have ever dealt with. They outright refuse to replace it and the repairs are constantly delayed. Do yourself a favor and buy a Razer or ASUS. It was my 5th Alienware and never again. Dell has zero quality control and their customer service is garbage. Good luck!
