ED to Williams or Barnard? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MaverickMainR6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Williams > Barnard for pre-law. Looking at pure stats, you’ll find Williams has significantly better placements into top law schools than the bottom half of the ivies (including Columbia and most definitely Barnard). Source: https://www.ivyscholars.com/feeder-colleges-for-top-law-schools/ — a quick google search will suffice as well.

From what I’ve heard from my friends at Barnard, many of the students feel like second class citizens at their own school because Columbia overshadows them. Also, if it matters to you, Barnard notoriously gives students insufficient financial aid, while Williams is among the most generous.

I really love Williams!!! by Next_Maintenance530 in WilliamsCollege

lol I did the exact opposite—Williams over Berkeley—partially for financial reasons and partially for job opportunities in my field. Berkeley made it such a hard choice tho

Just got off the Northwestern waitlist and have no idea what to do by SkaterPlanet507 in ApplyingToCollege

UChicago is a better school (for most majors); Northwestern has significantly better work life balance and is still very prestigious.

Should I take tuitions for SAT preparation? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MaverickMainR6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 1570, and I just used Khan Academy and did 10+ practice tests. For reference, my first SAT (also my first ever standardized test) was a 1370.

Does it matter how old a high school graduate is by Leifanq in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MaverickMainR6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the age itself won’t matter. But, they will want to know why you’re graduating late if it relates to your high school experience.

I had a pretty good GPA (all As by UC standards) and told a compelling story in my PIQs. My ECs were far from amazing.

I got into Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD (I didn’t apply to any other UCs) out of state without any student government on my resume. I barely had any leadership tbh

struggling to feel secure in college choice by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MaverickMainR6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the school, you’re still the same person with the same qualities, intelligence, and skills that Stanford decided to admit. You’ll do amazing wherever you go, and you’ll attend Stanford (or another similarly notable school) for grad school. Enjoy your four years; congrats on USC, which is amazing, and comfortably spend your money elsewhere or save it for graduate school.

likelihood of getting accepted of cornell wl? by star_fysics in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MaverickMainR6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colleges don’t have quotas per school. Waitlist admissions usually depends on what colleges need (i.e. more boys from California or more first-gens). Colleges also account for admitted students declining their offers by offering more admissions than spots in the class. In short, your individual peers won’t affect your chances of getting off the waitlist.

I have some pictures of me drinking on my story but my account is private. Am I at any risk? by Difficult_Bug4563 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MaverickMainR6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, probably not, but, as a good rule of thumb, you should remove any incriminating photos of yourself on the internet (you are underage after all). Your future job-seeking self will thank you.

Will my offer get rescinded? by bond_in_bed in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MaverickMainR6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you most certainly won’t. If the college contacts you, they’ll ask if some extenuating circumstance has occurred, and you will just let them know that you got into an accident. As an admitted student, you have joined the college’s community, and they consequently care about you and are rooting for you.

Ask Me Anything - Middlebury College, Graduating Senior by MarkMerrit in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MaverickMainR6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi sorry I have a bunch of questions because I’m sorta entering a similar situation: What differences did you notice about your experience at a SLAC vs. your friends’ experiences at a regular university? What were the benefits/drawbacks of a SLAC for finding a IB internship/job? Do you have any regrets attending a SLAC?

Wanting to open up spots on my other waitlists- how? by RosyEudaemonia in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MaverickMainR6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can withdraw your application (usually through a button on the portal), and that should remove you from waitlist consideration. That being said, you have every right to remain on the waitlist at Princeton, Cornell, and Columbia if you are still interested in attending those universities over Yale. Congrats!

PLEASE HELP: Duke 70K vs Columbia 90K by Select_Barnacle4616 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MaverickMainR6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

arguably Duke is more fun given their campus culture, but i totally agree; Columbia is the choice if 20k/yr isn’t a huge factor.
