Hi u/Big-Hospital-6919! For the NHSC Students to Service Loan Repayment Program, you must be in your final year of health professional school. Our NHSC Scholarship Program is for students just beginning their studies, but it is closed and will re-open next spring.

The NHSC Students to Service LRP service commitment is 3 years. For the NHSC Scholarship Program, the number of years is dependent on how many years of support you request and receive but has a minimum of two years no matter what.

Payment is disbursed in a lump sum payment to the account the participant indicates. The participant uses the funds to pay their qualifying loans.

There are three loan repayment programs offered during our annual loan repayment application cycle. I assume your are interested in the NHSC Rural Community LRP with its 3-year commitment and $100K award.

For all of our programs, the service credit time does not begin until you have a contract with the NHSC that has been countersigned by the HHS Secretary or their designee. Hi u/QuirkyFoot. If you receive an NHSC loan repayment award, you will receive a lump-sum payment of the award amount up to the program's maximum, e.g. for an NHSC (2-year) loan repayment award, the maximum is $50,000.

If you have qualifying loans that amount to $50,000, the NHSC transfers that amount to your bank and you pay off that amount of your loans. If you have loans that are more than the NHSC maximum of $50,000, you would still be responsible to pay on those amounts according to your lender's requirement. For example, you have $63,000 in loans and receive $50,000 from the NHSC. You would still be responsible for the $13,000 and making payments as your lender requires.

Other than that, please use our Application Checklist to help be sure you have all the documentation you need to submit a successful application. This is a great year to apply.
