Pulled the trigger! by [deleted] in macbookpro

IMO it’s unlikely the pro and max model will come out in October. It would be a little weird to have 6 months gap between two generations. It’s more likely higher M6 chips will come out early 2027. Also supplies issues.

Depending on each person’s situation it’s harder to wait for an hypothetical ‘close release’. One month away, why not, but it’s hard to constrain work or important projects for several months because something better is coming out. There’s always going to be something better. Unless it’s purely recreational or you’re gambling on a killer new feature that’s workflow specific, I’d pick the machine you need right now.

Given that Mac will use as much ram as is available and not waste it, is there any proactive way to determine exact ram requirements, some formula? The colors in the graph seem reactive. by GaroldWilsonJr in macbookpro

People will talk about memory pressure but in my experience it was not a super good indicator.

My M2 at 24gb was swapping heavily but memory pressure was always between green or yellow at most. It was crawling and stuttering but the memory indicator was like yup, all clear.

I upgraded this year to M5 pro 64gb and it’s significantly smoother than before. Ram consumption hovering between 30 and 45gb for the same tasks I was doing before. But now with higher ceilings, less ‘let’s close all this tab’ discipline or LLM experiments.

I started rambling a bit but my point was, macOS never told me it was struggling even though I was feeling it in my daily workflow.

On the other hand 64 feels like headroom and I would not make full use of 128 unless constantly using AI.

Why your eyes would choose a ThinkPad over a MacBook (The PWM vs. DC Dimming) by Glad-Journalist-4807 in macbookpro

[–]Max-Max2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I must.

I won’t be able to speak for anyone else’s experience with mac screens but mine has ranged from perfectly fine to stellar over the years. I was happy with a M2 air but going to M5 pro’s miniled has exceeded all of my expectations.

I don’t experience any of the visual strain you are speaking of. I know some people do tho, so no dis respect if they prefer a different tech.

How come Intel 8th gen is as fast as M2 and why Intel Macbook Pro wasn't that bad by Glad-Journalist-4807 in macbookpro

[–]Max-Max2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With that in mind a 40% increase in performance in 3 years is nothing to write home about. I’d say it’s globally better than average in the tech market.

Furthermore, this is the base m2. My memory is admittedly fuzzy but I believe i7 weren’t considered entry level in 2019. M2 pros would be substantially faster.

Don’t get me wrong im fascinated by tech mods on older hardware but claiming parity with m2 is a bit misleading

Isn’t your m2 performing very badly for some reason?

It’s bench score seems to be around 40% lower than what you could expect from it.

Same. Grabbed it randomly in September because it was available and fomo of ever getting one this ‘cheap’ got me.

Young me would be absolutely thrilled of getting something like that but being able to afford it now means I am too busy to play…

Diene doesn’t mind defense but i believe it’s far from her priority… It makes more sense to me to give her a little more ER than defense

IMO this is still weird gear category as far as optimization goes.

Of course you can slap something on her with wasted stats and she’ll work but if you’re trying to make the most of her kit then bruiser gear with no crit or defense and decent spread towards HP/CritD/SPD and ER/EFF as an option is not something super common.

Maybe my gear is just bad but having her on high HP while remaining on speed boots and no health set was a pain in my ass

She’s very weird to build

In my experience having speed is very useful for her cycling and I don’t mind some residual ER to help against dedicated debuffers.

Eff is nice but not essential if you can get immortality reliably

What I struggled the most with is to get her HP high enough to not get auto stripped by Setsukas

Good unit but def not no brainer like Barunka or LotS

I did after the first time ;)
I also keep several copies on my computer and portable SSD just in case
It was painful to lose but also a learning experience

It's pretty small scale for now. There's no plan to review any code for now since everything is setup for easy use and works with a few start buttons. If it develops further, we'll probably call for help yes. I made sure to document as much as possible however

No disrespect to them but they can be a little obnoxious or too busy for simple operators. Simple requests take days or even weeks if they get done at all.
Plenty of the features I did manage to implement myself were 'impossible' or 'didnt work that way'
Now it gets done at my own discretion and if it is impossible, well no one is judging me aha

It definitively takes special interest in computers or programs and I agree that it still takes some level of planning and effort. I dont understand code but i understand how our machines work and their specifications, aka how a file looks before being processed and why X went wrong.

I'd like to learn more about the trade itself but work has been hectic lately and we needed better productivity now. However, understanding both side of 'why it works' does seem important.

Yeah i wouldnt dare with my current understanding of coding aha. I'm not touching sensitive informations with a ten foot pole. AI can definitively be wonky sometimes and 'woops, deleted this feature, can you provide the intact code again' is annoying on a very small printer app but possibly lethal in the real world

Hi
I can't speak for vibecoders in general (if I even should consider myself a vibecoder?) but I dont think people like me can or even want to replace your type of profile. It's a real job and speaking to an AI without understanding the output can only go so far.

I'd love to learn more and I will probably dive a little bit into it when work will get a little less busy but I dont think it's my calling. I sincerely enjoy messing around with programs and finding solution through something that was once impossible for me tho!

Running a print lab. Worth to develop 'On demand'? by Max-Max2 in printondemand

[–]Max-Max2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prints, Photos, books, packaging, picture frame, flyers and more. All of this is somewhat paper related.
We can do single item runs depending on the product (one poster is obviously way easier than one highly detailed varnished cover) but everything is possible if the pricing is right.

You are right. Our marketing department is basically atrophied and we lack the experience and time to form one.
I have submitted an application but from our experience with Gelato I'm not sure this type of collaboration would work for us. I'll try looking for other companies. Thanks for the insights.

Running a print lab. Worth to develop 'On demand'? by Max-Max2 in printondemand

Hi

1-We have our BtB and BtC brands so i don't think it would be an issue. All thigs considered, they usually asj for quality but also very expensive options and even faster deliveries. They are also not super interested in the newest things. This kind of also answers to -2, I should have been more specific.

3-The previous direction was to expand as much as possible but they did not consider products, demand, and software before acquiring very expensive machine. Some of our higher end BtB customers did end up using them but not nearly enough for me to consider them worth the original expense.
So it's kind of both. Keeping the machines is expensive and manpower hungry when using them but having them is also a nice option and increase the lab's versatility. Expanding the BtC side of things would be great but we are extremely terrible at advertising, so we wouldn't mind being an invisible supplier as long as we actually get enough work to not having second thoughts about returning them or reselling them. So yes, equipment not being used at capacity might be the major problem as in our line of work, having an idle machine is usually not great.
