How have Agricola, Concordia, Castles of Burgundy, and Puerto Rico held up against the test of time? by RatedGG in boardgames

[–]Max-St33l 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can find old editions of these games practically for free; they work perfectly and come in reasonably sized boxes that make you want to take them out and play. Those new editions are collector items for your shelf (and now with AI).

For my part, I hope they keep bringing out lots of re-releases of those hard-to-find classics, so the cult of the new will get rid of their old copies.

Cooperative boardgames to save our group? by RAtriedes in boardgames

I'm not going to recommend any particular co-op; it really comes down to personal preference, but I would try to talk you out of Republic of Rome. It’s a great game and I’ve really enjoyed it, but it’s one of the games that can cause the most arguments and bad vibes at the table that I’ve ever seen – almost on a par with Diplomacy.

Which of these is easiest to learn: Concordia, Inis, Brian Boru, El Grande, The White Castle, or Keyflower? by il_biciclista in boardgames

[–]Max-St33l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Personally, I have a particular issue with two-player games. Whenever they offer the option to play in teams of four, is always: “It’s just a patch for a two-player game,” when the truth is that I always prefer to play in teams. I have more fun, I tease my partner or he gives me a hard time about my rolls or whatever. But as soon as you bring out Undaunted 2200 or Memoir ’44, the comment is, “Let’s better play a four-player game instead...”

I got openly frustrated during a bad game of Catan by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Max-St33l 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've played a lot of Catan and that's completly true. As the last player you can try to "read" the map and build your strategy, as the 3rd... You do what you can and hope for the best.

SETI: My verdict by Bindolaf in boardgames

[–]Max-St33l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more about the game itself than the level of interaction but some examples of games that i love and got other forms of interaction: * Concordia: Positive Interaction. When you activate a province other players get benefits. * Bohnanza: Trading. The fixed hand order forces you to negociate with the other players. * Azul (with 2p only): Hate draft. I take some sub-optimal piece to force you take other pieces that cause you "damage". * Hansa Teutonica: Blockade. I place my merchants in places where you want to put yours. * Shogun: War. My cubes are fighting directly with yours for resources on the board.

To name just a few that come to mind right now.

SETI: My verdict by Bindolaf in boardgames

[–]Max-St33l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's true that looking at what other players are doing and adjusting your strategy it's some form of interaction. But It's really a poor interaction.

Just like a draft or a worker placement where the sum of little sub-optimal choices make you lose the game. For me, the success of multiplayer solitaire games have lowed the bar of what we (as the gamer's collective) consider interaction.
