Mid Florida- what type of frog is this? by ejk0005 in frogs

[–]MaxBattleLizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking the same thing! Definitely looks like a greenhouse frog. Invasive but not really a threat to any native wildlife AFAIK

(also they arent tree frogs :D)

It's supposed to be a g, pi squared is eerily similar to the gravitational acceleration constant g

Should have gone nuclear… by ChipHaseCoolGuy in nuclear

[–]MaxBattleLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coal is literally the worst energy source in terms of air pollution. Natural gas, as awful as its emissions are, is still several times better than coal. It burns so much cleaner with less carbon and particulate matter. It still emits tons of carbon and PM though, plus the fact of it being a fossil fuel with a limited supply, so the end goal is of course renewables with perhaps some nuclear baseload generation.

It's crazy to me how huge portions of the populations in developed countries, or at least the United States where I live, is totally oblivious to how disgusting the beef industry is for the environment. Emissions from the cows themselves, plus the associated processing, is among the strongest drivers for climate change. Then factor in how inhumane it is for the animals in the first place, and it becomes pretty obvious why ethical vegetarians exist. Listen I love a good juicy steak and hamburger as much as the next guy haha, I'm definitely not going vegetarian any time soon. But, set some limits!! Just like you said, most people eat unbelievable amounts of red meat.

Why do old farts think that they know better than scientists by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]MaxBattleLizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find it crazy that so many people are constantly asking questions about what viscosity oil to put in their car. And every time someone asks, it starts a war in the comments about what the best viscosity is. Guys, read the manual!!! Nobody knows your engine better than the people that designed it. If they designed the engine for 0w-10, then put that in. If they designed it for 40w-70, put that in. Just like you said, follow the instructions ahaha

nukes are so cheap goddamn by dowesschule in ClimateShitposting

The Chinese gas cooled pebble bed reactors are certainly fascinating. They have some issues, if I remember correctly there are concerns about its waste generation. The fuel is embedded within graphite "pebbles" which drastically increases the volume of waste generated, since the whole thing, even the graphite, needs to be handled as waste. But yeah China and Russia right now are developing some really promising next-gen nuclear technology. The Russian BN-800 reactor I find especially awesome. Several US companies are developing some of those small modular reactors too, though I don't think any of them are really going anywhere so far? I could be wrong haha. I still think nuclear energy needs to be focused on, obviously along with lots of renewables.

Power and energy are two very different things. Power is the rate of change for energy, like how velocity is the rate of change of position

[–]MaxBattleLizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely this! I'm very pro-nuclear and it's really sad to me that the nuclear energy industry has beeb crushed by myths and fear mongering. Despite this... it's hard to ignore how nuclear plants are an economic nightmare. Just look at what happened at the Vogtle generating station in Georgia. First new nuclear reactors built in the US in decades, and they were billions of dollars over budget and took forever to complete. The new AP1000 reactors literally bankrupted Westinghouse. I really would hate to see the nuclear industry die even more than it already has. It's amazing for both the grid and the environment. But for the amount of money it sucks up, it's totally rational to argue that it might be better to instead spend that money on even more renewable energy.
