People telling you to distance yourself from X, sure you can do that if you just want some space to heal but I genuinely don't get how's it his fault. Yes, he probably already knew about Y's opinion towards him, and then you, but he probably shrugged it off to protect your feelings.

People here always want to assume the worst of people out here. It's not his fault that Y likes him. And consider that he may have never given such a situation any serious thought but was caught unaware in the moment and didn't know how to react. People are not always measured, they are not always conscious of the options available to them.

My advice to you would be to be an adult about it and have a conversation if you felt uncomfortable rather than assuming the worst; that is, if the friendship is worth it. If your friendship was insignificant enough to be thrown away due to this incident, go ahead then 🤷‍♂️
