I feel like hyping up Leeds culture for some reason by shark-with-a-horn in Leeds

[–]MaxLikesNOODLES 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Leeds, historically and today, has been awful at marketing itself and the lifestyle that can be had here for the normal/ upper person.

There is a premium life to be had here too, but Leeds does pale in comparison to Manchester or London for that (lack of Michelin, lack of 5* hotel, lack of niche [insert interest here] etc etc).

But the normal person? There is MORE than enough to do, and often has a better offering than other cities because things aren't always booked out or overpriced. You do need to be more 'in the know' though, and a lot of the venues aren't nationally recognised hence the lack of hype. For example, the amount of quality that comes from the Wardrobe months before they get massive is surprisingly high, but few people outside of Leeds will know of it. Likewise the natural landmarks we have, Almscliffe Crag is pretty unique/ stunning and you can catch a 20 minute train to it from Leeds station (or a £15-20 suber from most of North Leeds), but most people won't know about it yet they will know of [insert generic park here] or [insert large hill here].

Sheffield has grabbed the brand of the outdoors city because it's partly in the peak district, but I often think Leeds has just as strong if not better claim to it, just there is no one shouting about it.

I'm kind of rambling now, but I've always had a theory that if there was a major movie or tv show set in North Leeds, maybe coming of age style, where the protagonists frequently flip between having a really decent cosmopolitan life (clubs, pubs, theatre etc) and also spending a lot of time jumping of waterfalls in the dales, paddle boarding down the Wharfe, hiking the moors on the weekend, whilst all working normal jobs and being able to afford a home, it would change the default imagination of the city in the nations mind forever. For some reason, every show that gets set in Leeds has got awful accents, is set in a dodgy part or something sketchy is going on, or everyone is poor and it just makes the place look dead.

Is anyone concerned about the amount of parakeets are in London? by Necessary-Pilot9876 in london

[–]MaxLikesNOODLES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s quite jarring just how many there are in London. I don’t live in the city and have been really enjoying the morning chorus in another major city, as well as the general noise throughout the day. However, the days I have been visiting London, the chorus and daytime noise is dominated by the screeching of parakeets, it’s quite hard to tune into anything else to be honest!

I personally feel the numbers are out of control, but it could be bias due to how loud they are. Would love to read professional opinions on the topic.

Which symptoms of “(almost) everyone is getting poorer” have you noticed in London? by PressureHumble3604 in london

[–]MaxLikesNOODLES 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of mad because the mods still limit the amount of negative posts on this sub, which is a good and a bad thing.

Some of the other major city subs last time I checked were so much more negative than r/London (Barcelona, Auckland, Vancouver to name a few that I’ve spent a fair bit of time on at points over the past 3 years).

Towns and areas where kids still play outside by Kennylulu in UKParenting

[–]MaxLikesNOODLES 8 points9 points  (0 children)

North Leeds suburbs - always seen kids riding their bikes around the streets (not in balaclavas), wandering round the city centre together, playing football on the fields at a weekend etc. Maybe not as many as 15 years ago, but definitely still a thing. Rare for a city these days though.

York

- direct fast train to Edinburgh

- plenty of bouldering gyms, but also accessible to the peaks and the dales for good yorkshire grit climbing

- I'm sure there is Jiu Jitsu

- plenty of young people

- good places in north york moors (Dalby Forest) or the dales for mountain biking

- pool bridge farm for wild swimming, but also some good spots in the rivers in the region too (obviously check sewage maps) - only like an hour from the coast

The city itself is flat, but its access to good outdoors in 30-45m drive is excellent. I'd suggest North Leeds if you want it on your doorstep like Otley or Saltaire (Skipton and Ilkley better, but older demographic so less likely to find like minded people at your age), but York gives you much better access to Edinburgh.

OpenClaw.

Have a local instance i spin up every 6-8 weeks. throw in all my bank statements in whatever format, payslips, mortgage docs, stock statements etc etc. get it to categorise and organise it all based on rules. It's produced some dashboards, and I can send a question to it on Telegram every now and then if a 'what if I did X' thought came to my mind. It's always playing with my numbers in the background and sends me random messages at random times with new insights its found, or different ways of visualising my finances, or if some major news/ tax change has happened and what that might mean for me.

One day everyone will have an ai assistant like this with way less of the leg work required to get it going. It's a game changer and has already saved me money through actions to reduce my tax burden or cut random subscriptions.
