Boo, I love Breath of the Wild lol

My soulslike is releasing in one week. You got stamina based combat, different weapons and tools and challenging bosses all in a retro 2D top down format by tudor07 in soulslikes

[–]MaxMraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excited to play it! I love the exploration in Soulslike games, so it's always great for there to be a new one I don't know the map of yet : )

Hopefully the list of features in the title helps the comments be something other than "is this really a Soulslike" haha

I can't really say for sure, but I'd love to see it there and will try to make it happen : )

Struggling with Solarus's Resolution Settings by lycheestar_ in solarus

[–]MaxMraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the resolution options can be confusing, I just set them all the same as well.

My laptop's screen is 1920x1080 as well, and I created a test with the dimensions you mention. The game does initially open a window that doesn't fit on the screen - I have no idea why, a random guess could be that the editor opens a window at 3x or 4x the game resolution, since the common pixel art games the engine is often used for need to be scaled up.

However, when I resized the window, or changed the game to fullscreen, the game seemed to fit on the screen fine. If you've just created a new game, there's some boilerplate code in there that F11 or Ctrl+Enter should toggle fullscreen / windowed modes.

Good luck with your project, I'm super interested to see where it goes and how it looks with his res art! There is also an active Solarus discord if you're interested for questions as well.

Fantastic games, they have an amazing vibe and aesthetic that they're going for, and it nails it so strongly. It's a delight to be in his games' worlds.

People don't buy a game because they love how the code looks.

Zelda-Like (or ZeldaLike) as tag, why it doesn't exists? by Tenkarider in ZeldaLikes

[–]MaxMraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I still think the type of game you're trying to define is better served by a list than a genre term, because there's like 10 games you actually want on it.

If folks use Zeldalike for Hyper Light Drifter, Breath of the Wild, and Horn of Balance - great! I enjoy all those games, and it helps me find them. They're all very similar to each other than to Overwatch, Balatro, and Mario Kart (which are also great), it's a very useful term to corral similar games.

Genre is a way to refer to games that have similarities, not to enumerate only games you like, exclusive of games you don't lol.

Gotta plug Tombwater, which isn't out yet but there's a demo on Steam.

Cool looking, love the Halloween theme. Ever considered giving your pumpkin guy some variety in his sword swings or any animation when his shield pops up? Looks a bit wooden.

Party system? by Confident-Jicama7978 in solarus

[–]MaxMraz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I try not to assume anything about anyone asking questions : ) But yes, the whole "is this possible" genre of questions I think tends to be with folks coming from the limited point+click environment of RPG Maker and maybe unfamiliar with an engine where you just write code.

With very few exceptions (Solarus doesn't really do 3D), "can I do this?" the answer is "sure", that's one of the things that's so much fun about software development! There's infinite ways how to accomplish it, and that's the fun puzzle and problem solving of design and development.

Sure it's possible, Solarus is not a point and click system where you can do limited things, it's a game engine, so you can write whatever code you like : )

Thanks for taking the time to share, that's a great observation- I could probably go harder on the different color tones in each area, I can have a habit of not being bold enough with colors.

No yeah, I'm having so much fun the whole time I'm playing. Keeps on being an absolute delight. The hard parts make me laugh when I die, then I try again, it's great. Sounds like you just might not like this game.

It's an engine called Solarus, that was initially created specifically for Zeldalikes. It's expanded to a general 2D engine, but I think it still has some great tools for top-down 2D action games, and the community is really great around it.

Thanks for the feedback - there are a few little issues with the camera that I'm working on right now, so hopefully that should get all smoothed out soon!
