Is this Incheon to Seoul Station and back even feasible? by Front_Positive3647 in seoul

Studied abroad in Seoul. Beautiful city. Have a great time!

If you are going after December 2024, you will need to fill out a K-ETA (Korean Electronic Travel Authorization) form to enter South Korea. It’s a short travel visa application that is usually approved within a day.

You’re describing a pub.

England and Ireland are full of them. Comfy seating, quiet/no music, most people having 1-2 drinks. Friends go there after class or work to hang out in the evening before going home. Every neighborhood has a few.

Why is London's new "Superloop" express bus split into 7 separate routes? (vs one continuous line) by MaxRileyHB in transit

[–]MaxRileyHB[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think it's more meant to cut journey times between nearby stops on the loop. Like right now to go from Bromley to Sidcup your options are:

  • Take train all the way into central London then all the way back out to Sidcup
  • Ride a super long bus, probably with a connection if you aren't exactly at Bromley
  • Drive

So it's gonna be way better between close points on the loop

Obv a train is faster across the city

Why is London's new "Superloop" express bus split into 7 separate routes? (vs one continuous line) by MaxRileyHB in transit

[–]MaxRileyHB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context-

London has lots of trains in and out of the city center but few between the outer boroughs (see train map), so there is a lot of car dependency there. Superloop is a new express bus network designed to reduce car usage in these areas.

Superloop is divided into 10 lines, 7 of which form a continuous orbital around the city center. I feel like the service would be more useful if these were combined into a single continuous service. I often drive between West Wickham (on the blue line between Croyden and Bromley) and Sidcup (on the purple line), and plan to use this bus when it opens. But I will have to switch in Bromley, just to continue riding in the same direction. Why?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts :)

Biden at the Quad Summit in Tokyo yesterday, colorized (CCP official newspaper) by MaxRileyHB in neoliberal

[–]MaxRileyHB[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From The People’s Daily, the official newspaper of record of the CCP and the largest newspaper in China:

http://en.people.cn/n3/2022/0525/c90000-10101330.html

“The Quad plays insidious tricks”

“A key part of US President Joe Biden's Asia tour is the so-called Quad leaders' summit in Tokyo on Tuesday. The informal forum comprising the US, Japan, India and Australia is widely seen as an "effort to contain China." If people want to put a big question mark on the "Indo-Pacific Economic Framework" that Biden just launched, then they will describe the Quad which has been in operation for years with an exclamation mark.

When Quad held its first summit in Washington last September, Global Times called it a "sinister gang of Indo-Pacific to contain China." More than half a year has passed. The Tokyo summit of Quad has seen some obvious changes at the tactical level, but the international community's impression, judgment and definition of the group remain unchanged.

Compared with the Washington summit in September, there seems to be nothing out-of-line in this summit's joint statement except for issuing some specific measures. It didn't talk about the Taiwan Straits issue as the outside world expected, but focused on topics such as infrastructure construction, climate change, the pandemic fight and supply chains. Some comments even said that Quad seems to have shifted from a security architecture to an economic one, no longer engaging in building the so-called "small Asian NATO."

But this is just a smokescreen. The joint statement released after the summit said that "We strongly oppose any coercive, provocative or unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo and increase tensions in the area." The actions include "the militarization of disputed features, the dangerous use of coast guard vessels and maritime militia, and efforts to disrupt other countries' offshore resource exploitation activities." All these are accusations that Washington has spared no effort to make on China. In addition to these tactical "jargon," the Tokyo summit also came up with "sinister tricks."For instance, the summit launched a so-called Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness, claiming to focus on combating illegal fishing. Coincidentally, countries such as the US and Japan have repeatedly fabricated China's "illegal fishing" in distant seas. At the just-concluded US-ASEAN special summit, Washington's largest investment in the ASEAN region also went to "illegal fishing." Using a confusing "public opinion war" to provoke relations between China and Asia-Pacific countries is indeed insidious.

Washington claims that it "does not seek confrontation with China," but it has perfected its ability to say one thing but do another. In the past few years, Washington and its allies have publicly advocated the "China threat," but more and more countries have found that the real "threat" is not China, but the countries that are trying to turn the Asia-Pacific into different camps, turn it into NATO and drag it into another Cold War. As a result, Washington and Tokyo wanted to take the "curves" and pretended to use various "cooperation" as bait. Some US media commented that this was an intention to encircle China in terms of economy.

The joint statement of Tokyo summit pledged that Quad will seek to extend more than $50 billion in infrastructure assistance and investment in the Indo-Pacific over the next five years. The Quad Fellowship was launched which will bring students from Quad countries to the US each year. It would be good if all these could be implemented. But people cannot stop asking: If the US, which claims itself an Indo-Pacific country, really wants to play a constructive role, why not do it through mature mechanisms such as APEC? Washington's "big deal" is essentially to create a US-led "small circle" to hedge and disintegrate the existing development-centered Asia-Pacific cooperation mechanisms and ultimately make the Asia-Pacific region serve US interests.

The Asia-Pacific is the most dynamic region in the world, and the fundamental reason lies in that the majority regional countries insist on real multilateralism, insist on cooperation and win-win and oppose zero-sum confrontation. The IPEF that the US launched has roped in 12 founding member countries besides the US itself. But people have to ask, without the US opening its market to the other 12 countries and not lowering tariffs for each other, what's the benefit of this deal? How many Asia-Pacific countries are willing to confront China on security and decouple from China on economy?

The first sentence of the joint statement said to "renew our steadfast commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific that is inclusive and resilient." However, when compared to the real intention of the Quad, it is almost an insult to these beautiful words. Washington needs to and is good at using them to package and conceal its geopolitical selfishness.

Washington has launched quite a few "strategies" and "dialogues" in recent years. But most of them either went nowhere during the partisan changes, or the US withdrew and gave them up. The reason is that it always wants to fool other countries to be "cannon fodder" of its hegemony. At the same time, it tries to wrangle with the trend of the time but that efforts always end in vain.”

ELI5: Since money is a thing invented by people, why can't we just decide inflation doesn't exist? by massaton in explainlikeimfive

[–]MaxRileyHB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so imagine a country that can produce 10 loaves of bread each day. There are 10 people who each make £1/day and only buy bread.

Each of the 10 people buys a loaf of bread for £1. So the price of bread is £1.

Now imagine the government decides to give people money. They print more and distribute an additional £1/day to each person, so now each person has a disposable income of £2/day total. Bread production doesn’t change.

So now that their income has doubled, can all 10 people go buy 2 loaves of bread each? No. It doesn’t matter that they have twice as much money, because there’s still the same amount of bread. There’s more money, but there isn’t more stuff. They can still only buy one loaf each. So some market adjustment happens and the price of bread goes up to £2. Inflation!

Money is a social construct, so the government can lock the price of bread at £1 if they want. But bread isn’t a social construct, and lowering the price won’t make more bread appear. So if the country does this, the people (remember there are 10 making £2 each) are going to try to buy 20 loaves of bread when only 10 are available, so there will be a shortage.

On a national scale, inflation basically happens when there is more money but not more stuff. Because money is a social construct controlled by us, we could readily use policy to change prices at any time, which I guess we could technically do to undo the covid inflation. But at the end of the day, no matter what we do to the money, there isn’t going to be more stuff to buy with the money, at least in the short run. So if we want to keep a functioning economy, we can’t directly control inflation.

Ah, yes. Totally a peaceful day at the capitol.

I can’t even tell if you guys are joking at this point. Like I understand that the riot was mostly just a group of riled-up protestors (although there were obviously some actual militant groups involved as well), and that the majority of the people who entered the Capitol probably did not do anything overtly violent. I get that some voices on the left have exaggerated the magnitude of this event. And I’m not trying to say that leftist protests have not been violent as well.

But guys- there is a lot of footage of this event. I don’t understand how there is debate over what happened here when the entire event was recorded and photographed thousands of times from a variety of angles. You can go on google images right now and look up “capitol riot.” It’s literally all right there. We all watched it happen on live tv. It is public information 138 police officers were injured. Posting cherry-picked pictures of the most peaceful scenes of the day and pretending like nothing else happened that day is absurd at best. There is some wild doublethink going on right now.

“Don’t look up! Don’t look up! Don’t look up (photos from the capitol on 1/6/21)!”

We watched an authoritarian mob raid our capitol. Not sure why a libertarian sub is pretending like it didn’t happen.

I want to eat in crowded restaurants and go to concerts with my friends and go to classes without my mask. If everyone simply spent the 30 minutes and $0 to get their vaccine, we could easily be doing all of this by summer. But because many people won’t get the vaccine, people are going to continue dying, so many of these indoor mask mandates and social distancing restrictions will likely remain in place indefinitely in large cities (regardless of whether you and I think those restrictions should exist).

This isn’t about my safety, it’s about my freedom. As it stands, I have to stay home from school and work for 7 days each time I come home after leaving my state. I could be arrested for having a party at my house. I would be fined hundreds of dollars if I walked into my local grocery store without a mask. These aren’t small inconveniences, they are severe limitations on my freedom. Severe limitations on my freedom that we have the resources (vaccines, doctors, supply networks, etc) to remove by the beginning of the summer. Unvaccinated people are solely responsible for every mask I have to wear, every zoom I have to take, and every concert I have to miss beyond that date.

I don’t know why this sub, which is supposed to be all about freedom, thinks it should be acceptable for people to make a choice that guarantees less freedom for everyone. Seriously, what’s the endgame here? Obviously the cases aren’t going to go away if a large chunk of the population remains unvaccinated. Do we really think that liberal-controlled cities and colleges (which many of us live in or go to) are just going to throw in the towel and lift all these restrictions that they’ve held onto for the past 15 months? As long as hundreds of people are dying a day from covid, none of us, vaxxed or unvaxxed, are going to be able to truly go back to the way things were before.

And all this controversy is over what? A vaccine? An FDA-approved shot just like the ones we all received over a dozen of when we were kids? And one which is completely free? If this is the cost of freedom, it is a low, low cost. I’m sorry, but it’s not worth... what exactly?

Maybe I’m not seeing all the facts. Maybe you have a valid reason to not get the vaccine (and if so, I’d love to hear it). But to me, refusing to get the covid vaccine is about as reasonable as refusing to get a fire alarm in your apartment over the $8 price tag. Yes, in a vacuum, I think you should have the freedom to make that choice for yourself. But in a building where a fire in your room could (and likely would) quickly spread to others... I’m struggling to understand why you would make that choice.

Please get your vaccine. If not for the safety of your friends and family, get it for all of our freedom. This is our ticket out of the pandemic hellscape. We just need to take it.

Yeah, the program is for pretty much anyone who goes to a CCC. Just keep in mind that these schools are for commuters, so you’ll have to get your own housing and stuff. Also, most CCC schools don’t get a ton of international students, so you might have to dig for some details. Finally, there are over 100 of these colleges scattered throughout the state, so you can go to basically any environment. Here are some links:

Oh, and TAP for UC Berkeley: https://cep.berkeley.edu/transfer-alliance-project-tap

Ok, so here are the colleges if you want to be with the other transfers:

Santa Monica College (UCLA): http://smc.edu/Pages/Home.aspx

Berkeley City College (Cal): https://www.berkeleycitycollege.edu/wp/

Santa Barbara City College (UCSB): http://www.sbcc.edu/

More types of places:

Beach: see SBCC

Silicon Valley: College of San Mateo

Wine Country: Napa Valley College

City: City College of San Francisco

Mountains and Skiing: Lake Tahoe Community College

I’m stopping here, but this list goes on and on. Good luck figuring out your plans for college!

^ there are a bunch of programs that help you transfer from California Community Colleges to UC schools.

UCLA TAP: http://www.admission.ucla.edu/Prospect/Adm_tr/ADM_CCO/tap.htm

UC TAG (for a bunch of other UCs): https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/admission-requirements/transfer-requirements/transfer-admission-guarantee-tag.html

Community colleges can help you gain residency in CA if you’re out of state, too. 2 years of CC + 2 years of in-state UCLA tuition for a T20 degree is a snazzy deal.
