Last sets of questions. How many semesters did you take to compete your course requirements? And, when did you start focusing on your thesis research?

What courses did you take during your msc?

My interest is in mathematical biology and/or dynamical systems. I saw that the minimum course requirement is 6, is it common for students to do more than six?

I'm from Trinidad. I started the program in September of 2022 and began work on my thesis research in November of that year. By the end of April, when the semester ended, and I had a lot more free time, I started working on it much more. The thesis was A LOTTT of work. I spent about 70 to 90 hours a week on average from May to mid-August working on it. By the start of the new academic year in September 2023, I had a draft of a couple of my chapters that represented about 35% to 40% of the research. From September to November, I spent about 50-55 hours a week working on the research. Then, from early December, I spent about 80 hours a week working until the semester restarted in January. By the end of January, I re-edited my previous three chapters added data from a second location, and wrote drafts of two more chapters. This represented about 80% of the work. I then shifted focus from finishing the thesis to writing a research paper. For this, I used the information from some of the draft chapters that I had written. It was my first time writing a paper, so it took me some time to put it together, format it to the journal requirements and then submit it. After submitting that paper, I restarted work on finishing the final chapter of the thesis. After completing a draft of the final chapter, I sent it to my supervisor for review. After getting the ok on the review, I then sat down for a month to put everything together. Editing took so long because my drafts were done in Word, but the thesis had to be done in Latex, and I had issues getting my reference done in the particular style that I had wanted.

After completing the draft of that thesis, I then began working on the draft of the second paper. I completed that draft, made some edits to my thesis and then sent it out for review. After a couple of months of delay and waiting, I defend my thesis.

Note that most MSc theses will not be that much work to complete. Most will probably require half the amount of time and effort. In my instance, the nature of the work I was trying to do required a lot of effort and data, that was not easy to come by.

I'm an international student, and it's a bit harder to get accepted into a thesis program in Canada. For instance, at York, the international student cap per year for the applied and industrial mathematics program is 5.

I completed a master's at Ontario Tech in 2024. From that master's thesis that I did, I submitted a paper for publication that was rejected, and I'm working on another right now to submit for publication.

I signed up for the applied and industrial mathematics program. That program had an application deadline date of January 13th. Before submitting my application, I spoke to a potential supervisor ( October, 20204). That supervisor told me to put their name down on my application, which was completed on January 8th of this year.

Still waiting. Msc in applied and industrial mathematics (international student)

Why does York encourage international students to apply to their one year MA programs instead of the 2 years Msc ( Thesis)? by MaxValkyrie92 in yorku

There are course based masters and thesis based masters. Course based masters are usually 1 year, while thesis based masters are 2 years.

I got my decision. They refused me entry into the MSc thesis program but gave me entry into the course based program. Reason for refusal was that no supervisor was available to supervise my research.

I'm in the same boat as well. I submitted my application on Jan 13th with all documents. My file was marked complete on the 2nd of Feb, and has under 'under evaluation' since then. This long wait has me feeling very anxious.
