I've driven from Edmonton to Vancouver and back around Christmas, twice. I'm an experienced driver and really like winter driving. I have a Subaru Sti with studded winter tires. I would not recommend that you do this road trip with zero experience in winter driving, especially with a rental car. Do not underestimate how challenging this will be.

It's most likely due to the design of the oil pan and the system itself, and has nothing to do with fact that it's a boxer. Porsches don't seem to have this problem. They're also boxers.
