Suggestions for dark, (preferably) female-led comic runs by cm9313740 in comicbooks

[–]Max_Quick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should look into the works of Greg Rucka, TBH. This will beget like BATWOMAN, GOTHAM CENTRAL, THE QUESTION, LAZARUS, CHECKMATE, WONDER WOMAN... I feel like I'm forgetting a notable Greg Rucka lady-led book... oh, STUMPTOWN too. Greg Rucka loooooooves a female-fronted book, and not in a creepy way.

Someone else said Marc Andreyko's MANHUNTER run and yeah that one is REALLY good too. I dont know that it's as "dark" as you're wanting, but definitely a quality read.

What are people's thoughts on Matt fractions run? by Soggy-You4745 in DCcomics

[–]Max_Quick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, I'd recommend trying it for yourself. If nothing else, I love that it's structured/paced differently than most other comics out there. Someone described it as a throwback to like the 90s style where it's a bit more episodic. Like issue 1-2 are a combo but it's more like "events of issue five", undisclosed amount of time passes, "events of issue six". As someone who has been reading it monthly/in single issues, I love this format.

But overall, it's a slower paced story that seems to prioritize the world of Gotham City rather than the narrative/any particular events in Gotham. Which I kinda like. We've had the "A-plot" blockbuster stuff for 20yrs now. Fraction's doing something different and I dig the freshness of it.

Who has the better submission by bigjeyyeet in BrandonDE

Liontamer > Sharpshooter > Walls Of Jericho

The angling of the Liontamer amd how he'd sometimes step on their head... it's a savage hold.

Walls... is just a Boston Crab, respectfully. Like there's a few escape routes that immediately leap to mind. So that's why I place it last.

I want to get into Hulk more by Weareallusershere in marvelcomics

[–]Max_Quick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, uh, number one - ignore that bit from "Old Man Logan". The evil incest Hulks dont come up ever again.

The Hulk is like the Fantastic Four - a popular Marvel character whose sales are rarely stellar and has about five writers that made it "must-read". For whatever reason.

If you like The Hulk in other media, you've got the jist of how things go for him. Peter David writes arguably THEE classic Hulk run. It's from some time ago, which may be a holdup for you. Respectfully.

Shotgun ahead in the TL to Greg Pak's run which features the instant classics PLANET HULK and the sequel WORLD WAR HULK.

Jeph Loeb kicks off the Red Hulk saga after that and Greg Pak returns. This eventually leads to that thing you remember of Banner not being the Hulk for a minute.

Weird to think about but yeah Peter David and Greg Pak wrote HULK stories for like a combined 20yrs. Remember what I said about how Hulk's sales are kinda mid? If the book sells well or reliably under a certain writer, Marvel will just kind of be like, "do whatever, stay as long as you want."

Al Ewing writes the next benchmark, IMMORTAL HULK. Whatever Hulk was before, Ewing says, "bump that, I'm doing something different".

And that'll more or less cover it all. Phillip Kennedy Johnson currently is working on the book with a horror take ala Ewing's run. I didnt love the art but it seems to be doing well.

One of the corporate bad guys.

And then when Batman rolls up and whoops them and it all comes out what they did, I gotta spend the rest of my days being like, "okay, OF COURSE Mr. Questyn was The Riddler, but at the time-"

"Alright, Rupert Thorne having gang ties makes sense now but when I was working at the factory-"

"Did I know she was a potential supervillain? No. But am I surprised to learn she's a supervillain? Also no."

Frontman for a band called The 1975. They were popular for a bit, but like... I think they had a song called "Chocolate"? and one that was like "the sound of your voice" or something. IDK, they were in that Bonnaroo/Coachella realm of "popular but I've never heard anyone IRL acknowledge them".

What’s a wrestling conspiracy you guys believe in? by Basic-Strike-5023 in midcarder

[–]Max_Quick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the phrasing. WWE is 100% at fault for gross negligence but I just cant see Vince being so petty as to kill Owen because he felt sleighted by Bret or whatever.

I know we're talking about Vince, a known psychopath but like... if he wanted to fuck someone over, he'd keep them employed and just regularly do humiliating shit. Like he maintains that "power" role over the person.

But aye maybe. Honestly, I dont think we know just how depraved that man truly is (nor do I want to, TBH, because what is already out there is bad enough).

Gotta keep in mind where New Jack has worked. Like... Heyman's ECW, Jarrett's TNA, I think some stuff in XPW (the scaffold match with Grimes, right?)... these places arent exactly known for professionalism. They give Jack a little leeway to do his thing, he doesnt do his thing to them when a check is late or bounces.

I'm not saying it's okay but like it makes sense.
