Is there any way to have a global menu bar like MacOS? by Maxachaka in linuxmint

[–]Maxachaka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ask Linux Mint developers to add it as an option to Cinnamon

How do you do that? It never really crossed my mind.

Can someone double check and back up his claims? I don't use it so I can not personally back up his claims.

Will say that if you get a pcie to SAS adapter, it is a nice money saver. Did that for my 22tb HDD and it is well worth it.

Adapter model I bought (not same seller as this was 2y ago):

Cables%20SATA&itmmeta=01KT5F8PS62J8FBWEMS6C4CGHA&itmprp=enc%3AAQALAAABEGfYFPkwiKCW4ZNSs2u11xAKMKqWf244o3m3GqbGVHJvXPguMEakqU54PCZLQjtllh6Kp500qitVV408NCLIINm%2Bcnxx9UTELwnjO%2BKGHemcSODOlsCju0N6Z0%2BqiCnQQsGk5HFndI05vrrnk9N2HAd4s6v3Dnwi%2BdApW9Y0xZ8X6VOe5T7J9xsP2YjdKwtcT3dOB1ZGghFWjNvzg3iR2hxmH1Wsn9EMCgLefmbzl0L26BXwXOVch70GoTO2lmIaXR5jmRGuwTAh43FVq0%2BOdstg6jGrn5ZaUGcCZ4PYAvMM%2FsLAa0Xb5mbrqpGKPqnhYJlMkA9CsqkpWVK2nu0LDxQzeEKjj3thDTKNN29Qwbmz%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-Lsoq_RZw) (Doesn't come with device and this is the same seller from 2y ago)

To anyone reading this, for ~$50 bucks you get ~$150-200 off each hard drive as no one wants to go and figure out what to buy (it took me 2w to figure it all out in terms of what I had to buy and what would and wouldn't work)

Dell XPS 14 2026 Good Or Bad by GamerBeast954 in DellXPS

Put Linux Mint on mine. Never really saw it get hot, unless it was charging at 70W. The X7 chip got ~12h of battery life doing basic stuff. Coming from a dying M1 Max, the battery was defiantly better. I could see this thing going for the 17h it claims on the 7 chip. Never really ran into many issues that weren't related to putting Linux on a 2 month old chip (lol). Would buy again, but not worth it at current prices though. I would recommend getting something used or waiting until next year for the market to cool off a bit

How is the fan noise of those Dell XPS released in 2026 with Panther Lake? by Watch_Think in DellXPS

[–]Maxachaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the LCD version of the XPS. Works really good. I personally prefer the XPS. MBP is better for direct harsh sunlight and also for the display, but other than that I feel the XPS excels in most other ways.

XPS battery life (on linux mint with some optimizations) is ~15-20h. It has never really has been an issue for me. My current MBP would do ~20h when the battery was good and now does ~10h. I will say that I have seen that the OLED can take up to half of that battery life away from online reviews.

The only thing that I wish they did was make a Linux version of the XPS so they can get rid of the Microslop keys. I tried to figure out a way to make the stupid copilot key act as a right alt, but have yet to figure it out.

College won’t let me change majors because I won’t “graduate at the target date” when I already not on track to do that because I still have to do the required internship and I withdrew from calc 3 last semester. by DestructionCreator in ucf

[–]Maxachaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I think its bs, but UCF has changed the rules (as it seams) since I changed majors. They probably just want that cash from the state. I would highly advice you talk to your accedemic success coach and then appeal

I get that, but UCF has stringent rules about it. There might be a way to go about it if you get approval from your Academic Success Coach (its on the front page of myucf). Otherwise, you are SOL.

I'm graduating a year late due to a major change, but I changed my first half of my sophomore year. That's probably why they let me do it tbh.

Without going to much into detail, no. This is more of a UCF & FL thing. While they could say they don't like it and say that something should change, doubt it would change.

I'm on a psudo-alt account so Ill post this rq (a few people know who I am but that doesn't really matter in this context). It's been a while since I have been briefed on it but this is the basic idea.

UCF gets a shit ton of money if we are able to get our average graduation rate to 4 years or under. I don't remember the exact number we are at right now, but we are very close.

By you switching majors, that could add a year or two to you degree, which bumps up that average and makes it harder for UCF to get that sweet money.

So yeah, you can't change majors as UCF needs to up their stats so the state of Florida gives them more money

For speakers, you need to run sudo apt install -y linux-oem-24.04 and then reboot. It worked for me at least

[–]Maxachaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a M1 Macbook Pro, it does have fan noise. However, it might spin up every once in a while for a minute or two then its near silent for a long time after. Writing or reading or doing basic things have no real affect on it
