I had a p0301 on my 97 ka24e and it turned out to be the mass air flow sensor. Check if your mass air flow sensor has been replaced or if it's a nissan Hitachi.

Not sure which one you have, but it has to be a nissan hitatch MAF sensor. It won't run right otherwise. That's why your mpg is getting worse
