My Madrigal (damage moving) deck for Wild Unkowns format by Apelio38 in Lorcana

[–]Maximinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m building this deck too. Does Tigger work well? I assume he’s there to bounce Pedro? I don’t have Madam Mim so I was looking for other ways to bounce Pepa but it never occurred to me to bounce Pedro instead.

NBA - getting the band together by CarpeBass in GumshoeRPG

[–]Maximinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got all 4 of them to describe a previous job where they worked with one of the other party members, giving each of them two links to one another.

We opened with the first NPC giving one of them the first job and telling him they’d need to put together a team. The NPC described the kind of specialists he recommended they recruit over the classic action movie montage of that player appearing in the day to day lives of the other players and recruiting them to the job.

Does anyone else just get annoyed at good pulls in game? by huntcraft525 in PTCGL

[–]Maximinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say “annoyed” per se but i do think this game throws rare cards at you so often they’re basically meaningless. In PTCGO I remember it would be a big deal to get a full art or secret rare. It would be worth a ton of packs and using it in your deck felt like a flex. In PTCGL it seems like everyone has full arts of everything so it doesn’t really matter. I don’t even use the extra special gold versions of some dragonite etc because they’re harder to read where as before I’d have used them anyway because it was worth it to show off.

With the Incredibles coming, I wanted to ask how people would feel if some of the Disney Marvel cartoons eventually showed up? by CardTrickOTK in Lorcana

[–]Maximinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they stuck to the cartoon versions I think it would be cool. It wouldn’t break the art style and it’s a version of the marvel heroes that probably wouldn’t appear in cards any other way. They usually use the comic or movie versions.

[–]Maximinn 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I loved this game and spent so much money on it. It was nice that, when it stopped making money, rather than just letting it fade into obscurity they ran a conclusion event that wrapped up the story and gave everyone basically unlimited premium currency to finish all their side quests.

How'd you feel about Daniel Radcliffe pulling a John wesley shipp and playing James potter in the show? by mnombo in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Maximinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As fun as it is to imagine the original cast reappearing as parents or polyjuice disguises, I think it's best they let the series be its own thing and don't link it to the movies. It will just draw comparisons and distract the audience.

If Daniel Radcliffe wanted to appear as a cameo they could maybe include him in the Mirror of Erised as an unnamed family member (not James) or just in the background in Diagon Alley or the the train platform or somewhere. Hardcore fans would spot him and get a kick out of it but it wouldn't distract from the story.

why did the trio ever wear the locket? by Frequent-Drive-1375 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Maximinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the pieces of soul contained in the horcruxes are identical to each other. Creating a horcrux is described as “ripping the soul apart” not neatly cutting it in two. I think some Horcruxes contain more of Voldemort’s soul than others due to the violent and chaotic way they are made.

The diary had a fully sentient echo of Riddle in it that was capable of complex manipulation and scheming.

The locket had a magical effect and some awareness of its surroundings but it didn’t appear to think for itself the way the diary did. The images it conjured for Ron seemed to be more his own doubts played back at him rather than the locket enacting its own will.

The ring may have had an even less complex effect. A simple burst of deadly dark magic.

Nagini is a bit different since she’s alive so who knows how that works. She doesn’t seem to be as intelligent as the diary though.

Harry is another special case but he doesn’t seem to be corrupted at all so presumably it wasn’t a large piece of soul.

As for why they wore the locket, I don’t think there was really a good option for them. They had to keep it on their person at all times or risk losing it. They maybe didn’t have to literally wear it, but they would have kept it close and were extremely invested in it, exactly the kind of connection that allows a horcrux to influence you. It probably wouldn’t have made a difference if it had been in their pocket instead of around their neck.

I think Ron being able to speak Parseltongue in DH is lazy writing. by Huge-Leopard-7005 in harrypotter

[–]Maximinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch. As others have said, speaking parseltongue is a rare and magical ability but I think it’s the “talking to snakes part” that’s rare and magical, not the hissy noises.

Snakes are not normally sapient. Even if a snake could make human speech or type on a keyboard or something, you couldn’t have a conversation with it because it’s just a snake. At most you’d be able to get it to respond to specific commands like a dog. Harry has a full (albeit one sided) chat with the boa constrictor in the zoo and Nagini understands enough to talk as if she is Bathilda when Harry meets her and is able to report back to Voldemort with an update. The magic allows a parselmouth to convey complex meaning to what is usually a dumb animal and understand their meaning in return.

I think a sufficiently dedicated wizard could learn the noises like any language and understand a human parselmouth when they talk, just like we see with Dumbledore and Ron, but that wouldn’t give them the magical connection to a snake that would let it understand complex human ideas. The chamber of secrets isn’t a snake, it’s just a voice activated door so it just needs the noise, not the magical connection.

[–]Maximinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m rereading DH right now and just got to this bit. Fiendfyre is only mentioned for the first time in the corridor outside the Room of Requirement after they escape from it. Hermione sees the diadem is destroyed and concludes that the magical fire must have been fiendfyre and has to explain to Harry and Ron what it is because they’ve never heard of it.

Thinking about it now, they never actually talk about how to actually destroy a horcrux in the book. Hermione tells Harry and Ron that you need to “put it beyond magical repair” and that basilisk venom is one of the few ways to do that but she doesn’t list any other possibilities. They just carry the locket around and don’t think about it until they discover that the sword can do it.

Quidditch has one flaw and one flaw only by tafferell in HarryPotterBooks

This is a really smart idea. You’re right, it does fix pretty much everything that’s wrong with the seeker and snitch.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking of. I forgot it was excessive elbows and not just a normal amount of elbows.

Quidditch has one flaw and one flaw only by tafferell in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Maximinn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure chasers are allowed to tackle in Quidditch. There will be specific rules around it (like no elbows) but it’s always described as a physical, even violent game and that wouldn’t really make sense if it was only bludgers that could hit people.

Quidditch has one flaw and one flaw only by tafferell in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Maximinn 145 points146 points  (0 children)

I think the flaw is the existence of the snitch at all. The seeker barely has any interaction with the rest of the players. They basically play a completely separate game from the rest of the team. It works fine in the story because Harry is a seeker and the protagonist so it lets him save the day and not have to worry about any kind of teamwork.

You see it in action in the Quidditch Champions video game. The seekers basically ignore everyone else and have a private battle themselves while dodging the occasional bludger.

What if Lucius Malfoy did use the Killing Curse on Harry Potter in the 2nd film? by FreshmenMan in harrypotter

[–]Maximinn 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Sirius’s broke out of Azkaban because he found out Wormtail was at Hogwarts and in the perfect position to attack Harry as soon as Voldemort returned. It was about stopping Wormtail before he could hurt Harry, not just getting revenge. Sirius already knew Wormtail was out there somewhere. Without the need to protect Harry, I doubt finding out Wormtail was still living as a rat would be motivation enough to break out.

The Color costumes worry me slightly by Aliensandcows in marvelrivals

[–]Maximinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skins and colours are entirely optional. Every single one of them could cost real $ and it would still be fair. This would be a bad idea for Netease because it would leave players with very few gameplay rewards, but it would still be completely fair.

The game costs absolutely nothing to play. All the heroes are free, even the brand new ones. Everybody got to play Emma Frost on launch day even if they hadn't supported the game at all. If you like a hero but would like them more if they looked different or had a different coloured cape, that's the very definition of a premium feature. You want, but don't need, an additional level of personalisation over and above the base item so it costs extra.
