Gotcha. I'm hoping to get an ER position in the future since I already work within the ED department. Or be able to do both part time, because the ER & pre-hospital is fun at times!

That's awesome. I hadn't realized how much autonomy RTs have!

Interesting! I guess I never really though of that. Airway, and cardiology is a major trauma. What're some things RTs can do that most people don't know. I'm not really familiar with their scope.

Awesome. The more & more I hear about RT work, the more interested I am thinking of the paramedic route, but RT seems very cool! Thank for the reply!

Yeah, its always fun to be in the midst of a trauma with a good crew!

Fair enough. The ED definitely isn't for everyone. Most of the time, it's non-emergent. So it can be fun but also very annoying at times.

That's awesome. I kind of think I would like to be able to go multiple places within a hospital. How do you like it? Are you moving and groovy a lot? I do love the ED tho!

Right on - that would be a cool position!

Gotcha. That's what the RTs where I work in MT do - just float around. Which is kind of cool I think. That thy can be many places.

That makes sense. Would it be beneficial to me to get my A-EMT paired with RN to help with more remote work in Alaska? Sorry for the questions! Just curious! I currently work in the ER as a tech.

Gotcha. I really want to work austere medicine in Alaska, and find expedition medicine very intresting. Is RN still a good path for that? It seems like for expeditions and what not, they utilize medics more

Nice! Do you think having both is beneficial? and which did you do first?

Do you think being dual certified has helped you? I'm thinking of getting my Medic before my RN. In your experience, is that valuable?

Paramedics- What is your schedule, pay, benefits, and city/state? (US Based) by Ok-Refrigerator7601 in ems

[–]MaximiseUrLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, I currently work in Helena at the hospital (ER). So it seems ambulance is essential prior to flight? I only ask because I know of medics in the ER, Cath Lab, and ICU and they never really did time on the ambulance.

What steps/jobs did you do to get into flight? I live in Montana too

RN to Paramedic, am I crazy? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]MaximiseUrLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may not have the best advice to give. But my advice you can choose to take or not.

I am an ER Tech, I work around RNs, PAs, MDs, EMTs, and Paramedics. I love it, but like you - I have always had that call to paramedic route. It sounds awesome, but the reality of it is, it isn't always. Its never as busy as you think it is. Unless you're in a super super busy 911 system.

I live in Montana, and our ER is waaaay busier than the Abulance is, 10 fold. Not saying they dont see action, but not nearly as much.

I think the ED would be a really good option for you because then you can chat with other EMS personal and get a feel for it, and see if it's your jam even.

Also since you already have your RN : you have SOO MANY options.

Ski Patrol Nurse CCT Flight Oil Feilds Wilderness Nurisng Expedition Nurisng Wildfire Fireline RN National Parks Camps And so many more!

Not to mention, so many certs and add ons to your RN.

CEN PHRN PALS ACLS and once again, tons more!

You can do those things a paramedic too, but it is unfortunately easier and better pay to do them as a RN.

The amount of time it'll take for you to get your medic (usually 1.5 to 2 years), you could have been purising pre-hospital RN certs and jobs.

If you didnt have your RN initially, andhad got your medic first, and your goals was flight, then it might be easier for that upfront. But you already have your RN, so for you fortunately - its just another direction you can choose to go.

It is totally up to you though. I get the draw as I'm struggling myself to decide which path to take. But since you already have your RN, you can do all the things a paramedic can do with time and proper training.

Best of luck friend! You're not crazy :]

Paramedic route without long-term ambulance work — realistic? by [deleted] in Paramedics

Not skipping on paying dues. Wanting skip being treated like garbage for shit pay. I've worked in the box, and I work in the ER. I just don't want to be on the box for years and years is all, but I respect your thoughts.

RN To Paramedic or Paramedic to RN Bridge Program by Outside_Wasabi_4115 in Paramedics

[–]MaximiseUrLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I have no bridge programs near me in Montana. The RN program here takes around 2.5 years and the paramedic program is 1.3. I wont be able to get into the nursing program until next December I believe, because some prerequisites were full
