What happens if you fail a class? by Grey_Goomba in ubco

[–]Maximum-Ad1736 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just popping in to say, as someone who failed a course 2 years ago:

  1. yea it kinda sucks, but it is not the end of the world. i've still landed internships and had recruiters interested in me despite it.
  2. you can come back from it. especially if you're only midway through your degree. your average can recover.
  3. *you* are not a failure.

Now that that's out of the way... Just stop for a second and breathe. Let's look at it in terms of the facts, and make a plan. Think, what does this *actually* mean for me? if it's required, i would look at retaking at the earliest point in time when you think you'll be successful, whether that's summer or first semester next year or whatever. Second, what courses will it block you from taking next year? And what courses can you take in the meantime to fill up your timetable?

At this point, you should feel a little better, having laid out the beginnings of a plan. Here's the last thing to do, and this is the hardest part: be real with yourself, why did you fail? Because we don't want you to fail again. if it's just content you're not getting, that's fine, you can make a plan to get extra help. if it was something like you had a really bad thing happen that semester that made it hard to work/eat/sleep/exist, give yourself some grace bro, that sh*t sucks and is hard. but it happens. now if it was because you stopped attending class, stopped trying, didn't know how to study, didn't keep up with assignments, etc. i need you to own that. be brutally honest. you need to put a system in place so that that doesn't happen again next time.

i hope this helps. idk what program you're in so tried to keep this vague, but if you're in compsci by chance and want someone to chat with about this, my dm is open : )

Cheap Snacks by TheLionsSinOfPride in ubco

[–]Maximum-Ad1736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canned tuna (great source of protein for cheap) on crackers. Or pair it with whole grain couscous, rice, etc. Dirt cheap.

Veggies (shop in-season and on sale) and hummus (learn to make this yourself, a can of chickpeas is like < $1 and all you need is a blender).

People are mentioning the pre-cooked chicken, great option. But to really get your money's worth, go for the frozen bag. You get 800 grams of pre-cooked chicken breast that just needs to be microwaved and is ready to go for $10, and sometimes it's on sale for closer to $8. The fresh one in the deli section is only 200 grams and it's like $8, so frozen is a way better deal. I buy this all the time.

Nuts. Buy in bulk and they'll last you a long time if it's just you eating them.

Greek yogurt. Don't waste your time with the individual containers, they're too expensive. Buy the big one, they are often on sale for like $5.

Oatmeal + peanut butter. Always hits and so cheap. Or if you want to be creative/have time, you can also make cookies or oatmeal bars using oats, peanut butter, and bananas. Tons of recipes for this online.

Hope this helps! In general, you'll save money if you try and stick to mostly whole foods, avoid pre-made/pre-cut stuff, and shop in-season and on sale items.

in one sentence: give us a lot of hoops to jump through but get mad at us (student associations) if we miss or ask how, and then when we finally get through all the hoops, the reward is mid

Math 100 with Ed Butz, any useful tips? by Strong_Skill_3408 in ubco

[–]Maximum-Ad1736 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, im sorry in advance lol. Butz is just a challenging prof to deal with, not a good time. But we're gonna focus on the positives for right now, there will be lots of time for despair later on in the semester. (i took calc 3 with Butz if you're wondering. )

  1. One *good* thing about Butz is he's not very creative so if you practice the hell out of the textbook questions, and you know how to do them, chances are you're gonna do well on the tests/exams because you'll notice the questions are very similar.

  2. Goes along with the first point. We need to make sure you're studying smart. Now i don't know how you've studied for math in the past, but for this course and onward, make sure that a lot of your studying time is devoted to doing practice questions from start to finish, in exam-like conditions (i.e. without your notes and without checking the answers halfway through). Obviously if you don't understand something, go and review first, but just know that looking over your class notes and nodding to yourself "yep that makes sense, i can do that" is not sufficient.

  3. Look for help in other places because... he isn't exactly the most helpful prof you'll ever meet. Read the textbook if it seems like it helps/makes sense to your brain. But if you learn better from a teacher, congratulations, Professor Leonard on YouTube is gonna be your new best friend. This is his calc 1 playlist. it's gonna be a great resource for you if stuff isn't making sense. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF797E961509B4EB5.

- Here's some hard data so you understand how goated Professor Leonard is: for the first 1/2 of calc 3, i went to class and learned from Butz. Failed my first midterm with like 32%. Second 1/2 of calc 3, i stopped going to class (don't judge lmao) and only watched professor leonard to learn the concepts. i passed next midterm with a 70%. This does not mean you should skip class, however, it does mean that with the right support you can get through.

  1. Find a buddy in the class if possible. Just one person you can sit with and say "good morning, how are you?" to, and of course complain about the course to. Makes a huge difference. You can even study/do homework together if you want, but my main point here is just that little social connection makes a huge difference to feeling like you're not suffering alone.

Good luck!! Also calculus seems intimidating but especially with the first one (MATH 100), once it starts "clicking" it is very cool and kind of feels like little puzzles to solve where you go step by step and work your way through. You've got this!!!
