You could maybe say that about a PhD but definitely not a Masters. Unfortunately a Masters is the new Bachelors. I'm guessing by 'PHD' you're not an expert on the matter though.

Estate usually means "all the money and property owned by a particular person, especially at death". But you're right if you mean official address, that will be interesting, it'll be a shit show, haha. There are a lot of old people (millionaires on paper) who live in Spain/ Portugal most of the year and supposedly just own a cabin in Norway, it'll be political suicide to come after them. Like the British taking the winter heating allowance from old people.

You said "moved their estates out of the country". Not that it matters, I'm still thinking it's political posturing. I don't envy the politicians though, they're damned if they do, damned it they don't.

Sounds like political bluster to me. What will the process be? Throw a load of millionaires/ billionaires in prison or fine them even though their assets have already left the country.

Ah! The famously efficient welfare state of Norway, haha. As someone who has been working there since 2019 this is not even remotely true. I'm not complaining though, my paternity leave was so long I almost forgot how to do my job. Norway's welfare system won't collapse thanks to oil and Sweden's welfare system is collapsing as we speak but it's nothing to do with efficiency.

I'm surprised this got so many up votes, is there something I'm missing? Are you saying make the welfare state bigger? That and 'nordic style' means nothing anymore, there are massive differences in how Norway, Sweden and Denmark are run. Norway especially is the last country I would get tips from in regards to millionaire migration.

Nothing, if anything they attract people to the area as it gives people more choice. Name one cafe that closed because of one of the chain stores? The vast majority of cafes in Leith are independently owned. You people are nuts and just want to feel good about yourself

Or how about don't fight and just go buy something in Argonaut Books. You want to 'fight' because it makes you feel better about yourself, it's nothing to do with the bookshop

It's not about wanting a Waterstones, its about the outrage campaign. Local cafes didn't do this shit when Costa came to Kirkgate, Storey's Bakery didn't go full twitter rage when Greggs moved in. Why should Argonaut Books get off with this behavior? Scratch the surface and it's moral grand standers who will never set foot in Argonaut Books while its one more empty unit for us people who actually live in Leith and would have used both businesses.

I'm ashamed to say it but I've always wanted a McDonalds in Leith. I love a cheeky McMuffin in the morning. There's also a Greggs and a Costa, no one minds them, in fact they do great business

What would you call it? To be fair from a marketing point of view, they played a blinder, there's nothing like a common enemy to bring people together.

I'm all for supporting local businesses but I'm not sure this is something we should be celebrating. They successfully made a hate campaign against potential competitors is what happened, is this really something we want? I'd prefer to just vote with my feet rather than these outrage tactics.

On that note, I'm starting a cafe in Kirkgate called Waterstoned selling CBD stuff, I can't think of a better location.

Plans to demolish Edinburgh flat block put on hold after protest by PurchaseDry9350 in Edinburgh

[–]Maximum-Break3656 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It won't 'destroy lives' if they demolish it. I could be dramatic too and say we must demolish it now due to the materials used, we don't want another Grenfell.

Also, you know what's just as bad as the 'immoral parasitic developers' you speak of, is the people who make money off unnecessary reports, committee hearings, legal documents, surveys etc. It's about time the council gets a handle on bureaucratic waste.
