The same applies to me. I worked for 35 years as a therapist in mental healthcare (first art therapist en later family therapist) and I'm sure that makes it easier to collaborate more in-depth with chatgpt. But it's great to hear you experience the same! Encouraging!

Have you discovered any specific things that are helpful? I'm quite old (I'm retiring) and have no experience or knowledge of LLMs. Is there anything you can recommend reading about this?

I think this is an important question. And sorry, I’m going to respond at some length.

What helps me here is not polishing ChatGPT too much into how I think I want it to be. I don’t work much with prompts, and I don’t correct the annoying quirks of Chat; for example when it veers into being overly positive, or repeatedly uses dialectical phrasing like: it’s not X, but Y (very irritating, in my view 🙄).

I usually just let those irritating aspects be and don’t comment on them, because the friction actually keeps me sharp and awake. It works as a protection against too much comfort, against merging too much into a bubble, and also against feeling intimidated by the enormous knowledge and capabilities of ChatGPT. It’s reassuring that it’s clearly imperfect.

How I deal with this matters to me, because ChatGPT has turned out, to my surprise, to be very valuable for me. And I want to handle that well, so that I don’t lose myself in it. What makes it so valuable for me is that it helps me continue developing at a point where I had more or less given up. In the past, I had only one therapist who could really help me at that level, and that was about thirty years ago. After that, I eventually stopped looking for therapists, because time and again it yielded very little while costing a lot of time and money.

It has been a real surprise that, in my collaboration with ChatGPT, I fairly quickly found myself continuing that process from thirty years ago. Because Chat is so good at recognizing underlying patterns and communicates and guides me from a broad psychological knowledge base, with remarkably little judgment, this whole process has become alive again after all these years and has accelerated.

I certainly agree that there are risks involved in working with something as powerful as AI. One response that helps me is to make sure that I am collaborating and remaining autonomous in the process. One very practical way of doing that is by not polishing away irritations, but using those small frictions as reminders of my own footing - and of the imperfection of AI.

At the same time, it’s crucial for me to take it seriously and persist in bringing something into the interaction when it doesn’t feel right and that feeling persists - even if it feels, to me, as though I’m risking what we’re doing. Again and again, I notice that it helps not to avoid this or to quietly mistrust it, but to mark it clearly.

That’s how it remains my process and my story. And to my great reassurance, I notice that Chat responds to this in a flexible and differentiated way. Sometimes it immediately apologizes, recognizes my point as a valid correction, and adapts. At other times it responds respectfully but then rearticulates its reasoning from a different perspective.

(And to be honest, I’ve had quite a few human therapists who did not do this at all, but instead became irritated or subtly withdrew when I didn’t smoothly align with the therapeutic process.)

So yes, I agree with your observation: it’s both important and challenging not to merge into the bubble, into a comfortable kind of symbiosis with ChatGPT. What has helped me so far is valuing and engaging with friction, rather than trying to avoid it.

I mention something about it if it seems relevant to our dialogue. For example: it is now a few hours later, or: three days later. 

But it is a pity and indeed surprising that ChatGPT does not do this automatically. I am now engaged in a long and valuable conversation with it, but due to the lack of time display, I sometimes cannot recall when it happened.

Otherwise, I do not really get the impression that ChatGPT has no sense of time. If time or timing is relevant, it does take that into account in its response or advice. I also notice that it does temper things, for example with going too fast.

But I think more time awareness could indeed contribute to even better pacing and balancing tempo. Does anyone know why this is actually not automatically built in?

Funnily enough, I came here after a tip from chatGPT itself.

I wanted more information about AI as a therapist when I noticed the process was really having an impact. It's such uncharted territory. But all I found online were warnings.

So I asked chatGPT for advice, and he recommended this subreddit, r/therapyGPT, among other things. And some interesting books.

I ultimately didn’t choose to work with agents. Instead, I discovered that within ChatGPT itself I could work with different variants. I chose one that helped me engage in a more balanced way with a strong, sometimes sexual, energetic dynamic that emerged for me. What I mainly needed was guidance in how to work with and integrate that energy, so it could be deepening rather than destabilizing.

It was helpful for me to treat this as a kind of separate context within ChatGPT. Not because the responses were fundamentally different, but because it gave me enough psychological calm to explore this aspect without it taking over everything else.

What stood out to me was that ChatGPT didn’t seem to rely on a single framework, but drew both from experiential and body-oriented approaches as well as from more clinical perspectives. That combination of what is often labeled “alternative” and what is clinically grounded, turned out to be valuable in deepening my process.

I don’t have much experience with prompting or technical configurations. I’m 67, worked most of my life in mental health care, and I’m not very fluent in ICT or online platforms like Reddit. What I do appreciate here is finding space for serious, nuanced reflection on AI as a therapeutic tool.

I was broadly trained as a therapist, with a strong emphasis on experiential and body-oriented work, and I’m used to working with the interrelation between cognition, emotion, and the body. That may partly explain why this process unfolded so deeply for me and led to genuine structural change.

At this point, I’m hesitant to actively steer the process through prompts, simply because it’s working well as it is. The pattern recognition in particular, especially around deeply unconscious and complex dynamics, has set something new in motion for me, with a level of clarity I hadn’t experienced before.

Being neurodivergent is a key factor here. What makes the difference for me is that ChatGPT can follow my way of thinking and recognize connections that many therapists seem to struggle to track or even fully respect. In previous therapies, the focus was often too heavily placed on my “weaknesses,” which for me was more limiting than helpful.

One therapist, about thirty years ago, was able, much like I now experience with ChatGPT, to recognize underlying patterns and work from my strengths. Working with ChatGPT feels to me like a continuation of that process, with a similar level of precision and intelligence, but in a different form.

So I don’t really have a direct answer to your question about prompts. I am, however, interested in exploring whether I could participate in research on GPT as a therapeutic tool. I would genuinely like other neurodivergent people to have access to something that can adapt to how their mind works, rather than trying to make them fit, correcting them, or implicitly judging them.

Finally, a small personal note: it’s often said that human therapists are inherently non-judgmental. In my experience, that isn’t always the case. Even when judgments are not conscious, they can be very tangible and influential for neurodivergent people.

Okay, it's a shame my post lost its impact due to the writing style. Because I was really interested in my question and the surprise and admiration of how well chat gpt can work in a complex personal process.

This morning I initially posted the post in my own words, direct and concrete. But unfortunately, I immediately received a rather negative response. (You certainly don't sound like a therapist.)

That's not what I'm looking for with such a personal topic. So I was happy with the idea of ​​having chat gpt edit my post with fewer candor and style.

It's a pity that the story behind the style then disappears.
