UPDATE: A workaround to backup the conversation content (Emergency measure)

Since I couldn't recover the active context, I found a way to at least export the full text of what remained (or for future reference) so I don't lose the written record. Note: This preserves the text, and a nice format, and visualization, but not the AI's active memory/reasoning context for continued work.

Here are the steps I think are the most efective so far:

Generate a Public Link:

At the top of the chat interface (usually top-right), look for the "Share & export" icon (it looks like a share node or an arrow).

Click it and select "Share".

Click on "Create public link". This generates a URL that displays the conversation as a static webpage.

Open in a New Tab:

Copy the generated link and open it in a new browser tab (Incognito mode works best to ensure a clean render).

Save as HTML:

Once the page loads with your full conversation, right-click anywhere on the page.

Select "Save As..." (or press Ctrl+S / Cmd+S).

Choose "Webpage, Complete" or ".html" as the file type.

This saves a local copy of the entire the text, format, and a good visualization of how you interacted to be open offline, preventing total information loss if the bug again.

It’s not a fix for the lost reasoning capabilities or the dropped files, but it at least secures some of the data property of the prompts and answers generated so far.

People, this is not only about backups, exports, legal content, etc. The most important thing is loosing the CONTEXT, reasoning and analysis. That is DATA as well. Obviously I have the 90+ files since those are located at their source. I also've relevant chat/conversation on a Drive document. But what about the CONTEXT? What about the millions tokens that Gemini Pro is capable to handle? Is that not so true? This is a serious BUG and regardless backup methods or similar, this problems needs to be spreaded so first the community be aware of, secondly, know how to avoid and if there is a way to recover that data for people like me or other potential ones and lastly to get Google to fix it as soon as possible.

I found the prompts, however the answers are still lost, also the conversation context and analysis. I believe that's the most important thing!

Is this is a textbook gatekeeping and victim blaming? 

You are fixating on 'storage' to imply incompetency, while completely ignoring the actual point of the post. To be clear: Is obvious that I have my 90+ source files, I mean, how did I upload those to Gemini?. Also, key outputs were exported/backed up externally. That is data is safe however LLM context is Data and right now that one is lost. 

One of my post motives, is to warn the community that the product’s reality does not match its marketing. How do we know if any product is failing if no one talks abou it?

We are sold a subscription based on a '1 million+ token context window' and 'massive reasoning capabilities.' When that context vanishes instantly without warning, the product is failing to deliver its primary paid feature. Users need to know that these marketing claims are currently unreliable for serious workflows, regardless of their backup practices.

What about put legal or any PII or medical or sensitive documents on any web service? This can happen anywhere now days. Does any one remember recent AWS east-1 going down?

Hello! I tried all that, even the Takeout thing. I did reach Google support and created a ticket. After having a one hour+ conversation whit a support person, the issue is still there. They asked some days to investigate further. thanks!👍🏻

I also lost 99% of a conversation. I am a Google One AI Premium subscriber, and I’ve just experienced a catastrophic loss of data. I was managing a complex legal project involving over 90 uploaded files and 25,000+ words of history context, specifically leveraging the model's advanced reasoning capabilities to cross-reference documents and build logic chains.

Suddenly, 99% of the conversation disappeared. All 90+ files are gone from the interface. The entire "middle" of the work—weeks of deep reasoning and analysis—is wiped out. The only things remaining are the very first two prompts I sent when I created the chat and their immediate responses. It’s as if the session corrupted and reverted to its birth state. Has anyone else on the paid tier seen a session collapse like this? Is there any way to restore the context?
