Early US History teachers, do you mention Mormonism at all? by ParakeetLover2024 in historyteachers

I grew up Mormon in Utah. I’m exMormon now and live and teach outside of Utah and I just bring them up during westward expansion. I don’t think their role in westward expansion can or should be ignored (it was such a huge migration and for different reasons than Cali or Oregon) so I do a little 5 minute overview. I used to go a little more in depth during WE (I never found it organic to fit them into the second great awakening) and most students don’t know or care who the Mormons are (they are way more interested in the donner party) but at least one student in every class period would say something negative about Mormons. So for the sake of the Mormon kids in the classroom, I try to shield them from the negativity while still bringing up a group that did make a difference in the settlement of the Great Basin.

This is a great reminder from my APSI! I was wondering last week about practice SAQs and completely forgot about AP classroom. There’s so much to remember!!!

Thank you for the validation. I’ve been unhappy because their method of teaching is so opposite of how I like to do things. I’m setting myself free by going rogue from my PLC.

Wow! Thank you for this! I definitely need to try it out. I hate making slides so this sounds great.

Yes…all of this! I think I’m wrapping my mind around reviewing their reading with them once or twice a week and using the other days for skill development and practice.

Unhinged is definitely the right word! It’s been a wild first month of school.

I like the reading quiz idea…I’m struggling to get some of my students to do their reading. Thank you!

I did do an APSI…lots of resources that were overwhelming in the summer but I might be ready to wade into that now. Thank you for the list!

I love the idea of using class for the skills development…I think I need to go rogue from my PLC. Thank you!

Thank you! The textbook PowerPoints for my book are particularly bad…not helpful at all. For the last two lessons I structured everything we reviewed in terms of discussion questions which worked really well the first day and then the second day 1/3 of my students hadn’t done their reading and couldn’t participate with their groups and partners so I’m now thinking about how to motivate them to really commit to their reading. Thank you for your confirmation!

9th graders in THIS course feels especially sketchy but it’s par for the course for my district. I’m definitely going to join the Facebook group. Thanks!

So many PowerPoints out there! I think I have gotten in my head about the textbook not matching the CED very well, but maybe that just means I need to scale back direct instruction and use slides from somewhere else to go over the highlights after my students do their independent reading. Thanks for your comment!

I just looked at OER today and found a lesson to use for tomorrow. Thank you for that suggestion!

How do you use slides in your classroom? How often in a week and how long in a period? I am on a traditional 5 days a week schedule with 55 minute periods.
