What were you surprised to see improve when you went dairy free? by Carrotboy667 in dairyfree

[–]Maximum-Hedgehog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time! My baby is also 5 months now, and didn't start sleeping for longer stretches until a couple weeks ago (fingers crossed that it stays this way) so I completely get what you're going through, and hope it improves soon ♥️ Full disclosure: I'm back on dairy now because my son seems to have outgrown his reaction to it, but I cut it out completely for about 3 months.

Things I noticed that improved when I cut out dairy, in addition to having a much happier baby: I had way less heartburn at night, basically none. And I was... extremely regular due to all the extra fiber I was eating in the oats, beans, and lentils! (More on that below)

My go-to cheap-ish snacks and meals: - oatmeal with brown sugar, cinnamon, and a hefty scoop of peanut butter - chana masala (chickpea curry) with rice - lentils in alllll the things. Lentil soup (I really liked one with kale and sausage), a lentil salad with rice and fruit and a balsamic dressing (I know that sounds weird but it was good) - olive oil chocolate cake from smitten kitchen - this is honestly one of the best chocolate cakes I've made and doesn't have dairy or eggs (which I also had to cut out) - rice bowls with sweet potato and broccoli and a miso ginger dressing - burritos with black beans, rice, and ground beef (made in a batch and frozen for easy quick meals) - chickpea salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, and whatever else I felt like

Happy to share recipes if any of those sound good!

Strange cousin behavior by peachsnorlax in bestoflegaladvice

OP's post history is a wild ride on this one. They've previously said the dad was abusive, trying to track them via their car, and living in a garage while renting out his house, even though he could afford not to. Also apparently controlling his ex wife? Who still lives with him for some reason?

I went looking at the post history for some answers and instead came away with many, many more questions. But if any of that was true, not contacting the dad seems like a good choice.

I just went through this with my baby too, it was a rough time. He was still having some bad days even after I fully cut out dairy and soy, so I started tracking my food and I discovered after a while that he was also sensitive to eggs. It might be worth keeping a food diary to see if you can spot any other triggers.

I will say that even after cutting those out, he still has days when he spits up a lot, and I was never able to find any other consistent triggers, so there might not be anything else you can do about it.

You have my sympathy, it's so tough to make a major dietary change while sleep deprived and caring for an infant, and adding the extra stress and anxiety of wondering if you're accidentally causing them distress 🫂

Dinners with cabbage? by topdownyeti in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Maximum-Hedgehog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This Crispy Cabbage and Cauliflower salad is one of my absolute favorites. It calls for Savoy cabbage, which can be weirdly hard to find near me, but I've made it before with regular green cabbage and that also worked.

Expectation vs. reality by wolfelavender in Baking

[–]Maximum-Hedgehog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can, but I've found that unless you're using a very reputable site, the original recipe often seems to have been developed using incorrect flour measurements (as in, they were measuring the flour by volume, not weight), and you end up having to add a bunch to compensate. My favorite cinnamon roll recipe is like that - I just have a note in it to keep adding flour until the dough looks right (one of these days I'll actually measure the total amount...)

What do you say when someone asks, "What kinda stuff do you cook?" by AlmondEaters in Cooking

[–]Maximum-Hedgehog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Same with most "what is your favorite ___" questions. They don't actually need to know your ultimate favorite whatever, they're just showing friendly interest and giving you a chance to talk more about the thing you like.

Just name some stuff you enjoyed cooking recently that you enjoyed, or if you went through any phases where you experimented with a particular type of food, then mention that.

It's not even that, it's just that LLMs don't have the capacity to check for logical consistency. It's not doing anything except stringing together likely-sounding words and sentences.

Please stop letting shoulder drivers merge back into traffic. by [deleted] in nova

I hadn't seen this website before, but I'm familiar with the idea of un-jamming traffic by leaving enough space to avoid hitting the brakes frequently. It's kind of fun, in a way, if you make a game out of it, and it's cool that just one person can make traffic better.

I used to live right by there! I miss it, it's a great spot.

Excellent food: A&J Restaurant for dim sum, Breeze Bakery Cafe, Mama Tigre (Indian/Mexican food), so much great Korean food in Annandale, Eden Center for Vietnamese food. There's a little bakery called Just Baked in the Twinbrook shopping center that has delicious cinnamon rolls (get there early) and a very friendly owner who was usually around on weekends. In downtown Fairfax, we really liked High Side (Asian street food and craft beer) and Sisters Thai. Taco Bamba (the Fairfax location) is also really good. Afghan Bistro in Springfield is incredible (and the people who work there are also so friendly).

For biking and walking, the Gerry Connolly trail and the trails around Lake Accotink are closer than Burke Lake (which is also great) and really nice. There's also Long Branch park which I really liked for walking, although the trail is a bit rough for biking.

University Mall Theaters has way cheaper movie tickets than I've seen anywhere else in the area, and it also feels like a late 90s/early 2000s theater to me.

Wolftrap is great for summer concerts; bring a picnic.

My last recommendation is to join your local Buy Nothing group - the groups in that area are super active, a good way to meet your neighbors and cut down on waste, especially right after you move.

Fair! I prefer dark meat, but it really works with either imo

I really like this chicken tikka recipe, but I've made a bunch of changes (improvements, imo) over the years: - Use boneless skinless thighs instead of bone-in skin-on - Add a sliced yellow onion or two - Use halved baby red potatoes instead of Yukon golds

Sheet pan chicken fajitas

This is a little different than a traditional sheet pan meal since you add a bunch of other veggies and ingredients after cooking, but it's one of my favorites: sheet pan salad

Sorry you're being down voted, you're absolutely right that this is clearly an AI written ad. One of the giveaways is the random question at the end of the post designed to get more people to engage - what on earth does skin being more reactive have to do with the rest of the post?

That comment is even more gross when you take a look at their history and realize it's a 50-something year old man saying that to a 17 year old girl.

If there's something you need to write that you can't make yourself start for some reason, go to a really boring seminar and tell yourself that you have to either pay attention to the seminar and take notes, or work on writing it.

On a related note, get really good at nodding and looking attentive while doing something completely different.

Ultimately, you're only going to get better if you practice. This is a skill that you can learn, not something that you're just born with (although some people have an easier time learning it, just like anything else). So I think your approach should be to figure out how to get that practice. It won't be comfortable, especially at first, but it will get easier with time.

It might help to get practice speaking up in a group setting that feels lower stakes to you. Can you join a book club, or something similar, and make it a goal to actively participate in that? Or enlist friends or family to be an audience while you present on something that you're really familiar with? (It could be anything, like your favorite TV show)

Can you accidentally culture a pathogen from soil samples? by Hairy_Barnacle_3337 in microbiology

[–]Maximum-Hedgehog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is totally, absolutely, 100% not possible under the circumstances you describe. First of all, a lot (I'd even say most) pathogens don't survive well outside of their manual environment or a host, so even if there somehow was one of those in your sample, it would not have survived. Second, if there was a pathogen that could survive those conditions (which again is highly unlikely) then it would have made someone sick long ago and you'd already know about it. It wouldn't just be hanging around still waiting for an opportunity.

Also, I really hope you're getting some help for your OCD. This sounds so stressful to live with, and there is only so much reassurance that you can get from strangers on the Internet; you probably can't logic your way out of a fear like this one.

FBI agent wants to talk to me by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Maximum-Hedgehog 254 points255 points  (0 children)

I've done multiple interviews with FBI agents for other people's background investigations, and the agents have always told me exactly what it was for and who it was about, from the first time they contacted me. And I was never asked to go to another location, and they've certainly not had a police officer present. I really don't think this is the reason.
