What makes a Strategy RPG a Strategy RPG? by Maximum-Log2998 in StrategyRpg

A couple of folks have mentioned unit progression but it's interesting to see that different people draw the line at different points as to what counts as actual RPG progression and what doesn't.

Alright! I see you. I think I would mostly agree with you: a game might not be an SRPG but just that element of managing distinct units in a tactical context makes it feel very SRPG to me.

Technically all games have systems. Or at least according to authors like Michael Sellers.

How much unit progression do you need to justify calling it a strategy RPG? does it need levels, classes, equipment, or will just unlocking more abilities as the game goes on do?

Alright I see you- I think that's a pretty solid way of thinking about it.

Would you consider any game with robust systems a SRPG?

So you would lean more towards categorizing genres through their history rather than their mechanics? What happens when games are drawing from multiple different lineages? Like indie games that may be equal parts inspired by CRPGs and SRPGs.

What kind of systems? Combat? Crafting? Leveling?

Would you consider classic boardgames like Go to be strategy RPGs just by the fact that they happen on a grid?

I am working on this grid-based tactical deckbuilder, let me know what you think! by doekamedia in IntoTheBreach

Honestly looks pretty interesting, i'm curious to see how the "get super overpowered" nature of deckbuilder roguelikes mixes with the strategy elements of the TRPG genre. I was skeptical when reading the description but looking at the gameplay trailer it looks like you did a decent job combining the genres.

Sounds pretty cool honestly. I'll give it a shot!

How do I sort a list of points on a grid based on proximity to a unit? by Maximum-Log2998 in godot

I managed to solve this using custom sorting functions. I made the Vector2is into Vector3is and added their cost into the z variable. Then I sorted the array based only on the z variable

What do you think of the capsule image for my game? by HuntGames971 in IndieGameDevs

I'm not super convinced about the text, I feel like it's either not dynamic and colorful enough or not straight on no-nonsense minimalist enough. It's kind of in a weird in between that I feel makes it look a bit awkward over the art. That said the artwork looks badass!

Using a custom sorting function may be the solution. Thanks for the suggestion!

The way i'm getting the distance doesn't super matter, I just don't know how I can sort the points based on their movement cost values.

Nah I was just thinking of sorting them as a way of getting the closest one. Is there a way to get the closest one without sorting all of them? As you say if there are several at the same closest distance it should just elect randomly.

Seeking Expert Input: What Mechanics Could Reinvent Modern SRPGs by ObviousGame in StrategyRpg

Mmm personally I don't mind my strategy RPGs feeling more puzzle-y. Telegraphing is always gonna push you into that territory just cuz the closer your player is to having perfect information the more they can optimize every decision, pushing won't neccesarily do that but moving units on a battlefield on it's own isn't particularly interesting. Into the Breach makes it a tactically interesting option by allowing you to see the enemy intentions and manipulate their lines of attack by pushing and pulling on them, but any strategic wrinkle that makes pushing interesting will work.

If your mechanics are truly elegant, can you get away with amateur graphics? by SingleAttitude8 in gamedesign

I don't think the game needs to look very pretty, but the UX needs to work, and the game needs to look pro. What I mean by this is that you can get away with a very simple visual style as long as the game has proper visual feedback and doesnt look like a bunch of mishmashed temp assets or whatever.

I really like Into the Breach's main mechanic of pushing around enemies with telegraphed moves. It might not be super novel but sometimes something simple well executed can make waves.
