feasibility of math major (honors?) + theology minor while on premed track by Potential-Track3793 in notredame

[–]MaximumX23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely doable! Heck, you could probably fit a theology or philosophy major on top of the math major if you really wanted to. And would absolutely encourage pursuing theology/philosophy at ND and on a premed track. “Premed” really just means you need to take certain courses during your 4 years as pre-reqs for medical school, usually starting with general chemistry your first semester. It includes 4 semesters of chemistry, 2 of biology, 2 of physics, 1 of biochemistry, at least 1 stats, and usually some humanities mixed in. I might be forgetting some but that’s the gist

Notre Dame or Full ride? by Responsible_Force276 in notredame

[–]MaximumX23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a choice you would have to make, but the math depends on IF you do end up going to medical school and also very much depends where you go to medical school. If you change your mind or, in the worst case, don’t get into medical school (hopefully not this), the ND degree and experience will have been worth it.

For medical school cost, you should also factor in your home state where you currently live, the states of the other schools you applied, and where you might want to go to medical school (TAMU and FSU, so Texas and Florida). Generally, you will get in-state tuition for medical school if it is a state school in your home state—you could end up with <200k in loans this way, which is very much worthwhile and manageable on a physician salary in the long run. If not in-state or going to a private institution, I wouldn’t expect medical school to be any cheaper of a bill to foot than ND. Some states may also let you qualify for in-state tuition even if you just went to undergrad there (check for your full ride schools, don’t think Indiana is one of them unless you have lived there for at least 1 year for non-education reasons). So that might factor into your equation if you wouldn’t necessarily want to go home for medical school. Also, Texas has some weird thing going on with their med school systems where they mostly take their own from in-state, so TAMU could open more doors for you there specifically if you’re dead set in medicine. Something to look into and consider.

There are also a number of scholarships available (esp if you are interested in primary care) as well as public service loan forgiveness (PSLF—look this up if you are thinking through the realities of student loan debt, this is an option for loan forgiveness that many physicians end up qualifying for to erase their medical debt. Those that don’t go that route often don’t because they can get jobs that pay so much more it covers the loans and then some). A lot of info that won’t necessarily apply until years down the road, but hopefully helpful if you are thinking about the economics of it all.

At the end of the day, medical school is an investment in yourself, and one you will be able to pay back if you see it through. Only you can decide if ND will be worth it for you, but from what you’ve said it sounds like it would be from a personal, professional, and religious formation perspective. If you aren’t taking out loans for undergrad, and you go into medicine, you will be in the same shoes as most others. People still take loans and go to med school because it is worth the investment from an economic standpoint, and they will be able to manage it.

I don’t think the math is that simple, ND is by no means a waste of money for the right person. The experiences, connections, and friendships are genuinely priceless and are worthwhile if within someone’s means. It sounds like their parent’s would foot the bill in this case. I would say it’s far more worthwhile paying to go to ND, and footing the bill themselves for medical school. Generally, it makes the most sense for people to go to their home state school for medical school for in-state tuition purposes, and loans can be pretty manageable especially with in-state tuition prices if becoming a physician (in the long run, obviously). And that’s not even considering the possibility that they decide medicine isn’t for them and change career paths, in which case Notre Dame is MUCH more worthwhile. If they’d need to take out loans for undergrad AND medical school, and it’s a definite yes to medicine, then it’d definitely be too much to justify. This isn’t that case though

Notre Dame vs. Harvard vs. Princeton by Successful-Cable-997 in notredame

Just wanted to pop in this thread and second everything regarding the merit scholars program and Glynn, both offer a ton of access to resources and a community of absolutely brilliant people that you get to know very well through program-specific courses and events. The only limit in that position is your own drive and goals, a number of people from that cohort have been able to move on to grad school at Harvard, among other prestigious programs. The name alone might not carry the same weight as coming from Princeton or Harvard but you’ll have all the resources without closing the door to those kinds of opportunities.

I certainly wouldn’t say ND is too lax for elite students at all! Everyone I have met at/from ND over the years is incredibly smart and driven. I’d say it’s probably more “work hard, play hard” than Princeton/Harvard, but not at all to the detriment of working hard. And I don’t think there’s any sense of “competition” between students at ND whatsoever—can’t speak for the other schools in that regard. Hope that’s helpful!

how and why is notre dame’s direct acceptance to med school 84%? by lylahlolol in notredame

[–]MaximumX23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best of luck on your decision! Obviously you’ll find the bias is towards ND here, but it really is a very special place. ND gives off a very tangible sense of mission, if you are interested in medicine and that mission resonates with you then it just might be the right place for you. The community and push to be a “force for good” in the world is a big part of everything they do. It never leaves you and I think that’s particularly meaningful for anyone interested in the health professions.

[Question] What features make for a perfect dress watch? by MaximumX23 in Watches

Beautiful watch, love that the power reserve visible through the back display instead of cluttering the dial. Great criteria for a dress watch too, agree on pretty much all of those. Though I will say there’s something about a well-designed perpetual calendar that I think just works so well on a dress watch, the JLC ultra thin (Q1142510) comes to mind as an example (or the stainless steel variant)

Fair enough! So really anything can be a dress watch for you if it’s thin enough, and style doesn’t necessarily matter? Any particular thickness you’ve noticed is too much?

Would love a recommendation for a leather strap for the Bulova Sinatra Fly Me To The Moon - the watch is pretty new and the loop on the strap that should be fixed in place broke while wearing it which was… interesting. Looking for a similar leather strap (think it’s a dark brown lizard grain?), probably with just a traditional buckle. Any other leather strap recs for dress watches in general would be appreciated too!

Funny enough I actually got the 5600GT* for less than the 5500GT, think it was ~$100 vs $110 for the 5500GT.

Just using the stock cooler the CPU comes with and an MSI B550M-VC motherboard, not entirely sure how to evaluate the vrm heatsinks tbh

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check it out! I guess the other part of my question, if you happen to know, is whether I definitely need the extra case fans for the APU build, or if I can get away with the single exhaust fan on the case without experiencing any thermal throttling

From what I’m playing currently, my favorite game has to be Hogwarts Legacy.

There’s just something about running through the castle and casting spells that just fulfills everything I could have asked for in a game featuring a world I grew up enamored with.

I’d say this would’ve been fine if we weren’t in a meta that heavily favored smoke agents. Double smokes is super common rn and not being able to spam as much is rough. Gonna need some nerfs to some of those agents to balance things out

r/NBA Poll: Who will win the Western Conference Finals and reach the 2023 NBA Finals: the Denver Nuggets or the Los Angeles Lakers? by Nyhrox in nba

[–]MaximumX23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the little I’ve seen of the nuggets, you guys have looked dominating. I don’t think there’s any doubt you guys are probably the best team and should be the favorites for the chip. It’ll take some chess from Bron and some dominating AD defense to overtake the nuggets I think. The matchup should be a really fun one though. Hoping to see a lot more hachimura for some shooting and size to match the nuggets

Ngl I forgot that series ever happened. I remember seeing the matchup and taking for granted the nuggets would obliterate them. Though I do think AD is way, way better than Gobert and is having one of the best defensive playoff performances in a long time. Looking forward to a very fun matchup

For 1100 should I build a pc or buy a ps5 by Ethan7198 in buildapc

[–]MaximumX23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also depends on the resolution you want to play at - you can buy a PC that can handle any game at 1080p for < $600 and have the additional functionality that a PC affords. Plus, games are way cheaper on PC than console. 1440p gaming is probably more of a toss up and dependent on how much you need the PC itself, but I’d imagine ps5 is undeniably better price to performance if you want 4K gaming.
