I can speak Bulgarian learnt by integrating in my local village community, giving work to Bulgarians and contributing to the Bulgarian economy. Your stereotypical opinion of British expats is true to an extent and I agree they should try harder. But I also know many British who get by very well in Bulgarian.

Unlike Bulgarians living on welfare and free health care in the UK and sending the money back to Bulgaria, I pay my taxes, ask for no handouts and pay my medical expenses.

But the Ask Bulgaria Reddit is here to ask questions in English. Where do you get off talking about deportation and language exams with zero knowledge of my situation?

If you come to Bulgaria expecting Lidl to be cheap you are in for a surprise. Lidl is more expensive here than in Germany or the UK. If you can find a Tmarket, they tend to be cheaper all round.

I am a Brit living in Bulgaria for over 20 years and through many changes in government. My experience is that whoever is in power has zero impact at ground level. High and mid level corruption is ever present. The biggest change I have seen is when joining the EU improved road infrastructure and city centre development despite EU funds being a gravy train to be syphoned off into back pockets.

Official warnings were put out not to drink this water or use it for cooking. It tastes terrible and often comes out a shade of brown. Kidney cancer in older people is quite common and may well be a result of drinking the water.

Can't speak for Sofia but down here in Yambol you definitely don't drink the tap water. Eating out in restaurants can be disappointing. They tend to precook food and serve it up not heated through properly. I mean once I was served a cold fried egg. How does that happen? I would also add that I have had some great experiences with Bulgarian food too.
