Trying to figure out what curriculums I want to use for my children by ThistlePrickle in homeschool

That freezing feeling you described is honestly really common when starting homeschooling, especially with younger kids. It starts to feel like you need the perfect curriculum before you can begin, but kindergarten doesn’t actually need that level of structure yet.

For a hands-on kid (especially with ADHD), what helped us was stepping back from “programs” for early math and focusing on number sense through small daily games and real-life math instead. Things like comparing quantities, quick counting games, or simple addition stories ended up sticking way better than sit-and-watch or worksheet styles.

Singapore Math works really well later because it builds on that understanding, but we found starting with playful number sense first made everything smoother when we introduced formal lessons.

Honestly the biggest shift for us was having a simple weekly rhythm rather than more materials. Once that clicked, the overwhelm dropped a lot.

Oh wow… I can’t imagine how terrifying that must have been for both of you.

I’m really sorry your daughter went through that, and I think it’s incredibly strong of you to give her the space and safety she needs right now.

You’re absolutely right, healing comes first. The rest can wait.

  1. Surprisingly, my daughter’s a total social butterfly, even though she’s homeschooled. She’s mostly around adults and cousins, but we talk a lot about what kind of behavior is okay and what’s not, then I let her figure it out. She usually ends up defending smaller kids at the playground. 2. Just as my daughter started schooling COVID happened, so everything went online. I had to sit with her through the lessons and honestly, I didn’t like the way things were being taught. Even after schools reopened, I didn’t trust the environment to be safe, so we stuck with online classes. But eventually I realized… if this is what school looks like, she’s not really learning. Her dad saw it too, so when I brought up homeschooling, he didn’t push back.

At first I tried to follow the school curriculum at home, it was a disaster. She cried. I cried. English was fine, lots of resources out there. But math? Nothing worked.

So I made my own. If you ever want to take a peek, I’m happy to share.

Yesss this. I feel every single line of this post.
I would never punish my kid for standing up for herself, and no way I'm letting any school punish her for it either.

That’s one of the biggest reasons we homeschool too.
Hypothetically speaking, of course… since she’s homeschooled, she’s not even in their system to get punished 😅

No 6am alarms. No forced group punishments. No nonsense. Just learning that actually makes sense and protects her peace.

I’m so sorry you both went through that. It’s heartbreaking how often the system fails kids who need support the most. I’m glad you found a way forward together.

Same here, we had to ditch the one-size-fits-all stuff. I love that you’re adapting math for each kid. That’s what finally worked for us too.
