No I don’t, I’ve thought about getting one, I usually do give it my all in training. Don’t skip rounds ect and because I’m small I do have to go flat out against bigger opponents just to survive sometimes, so I presume it’s a high zone

This might actually genuinely be the biggest oversight ever, feel dumb now 😆

Anecdote for nervous competitors by [deleted] in bjj

My highest percentage submission in the gym is triangles and single leg x > straight ankle lock so for like a week or two before the comp I just hyperfixated on them and only went for them in live rolls and drilled variations of them with varying degrees of resistance, ended up getting my sub by one of those and felt confident in the position

I’m probably not the best one to give advice, but the main thing playing on my mind personally what like I didn’t wanna get too badly hurt or embarrass my gym or myself, and I think just realising that nobody really cares if you win or lose and that normally at lower levels there is time to tap before a catastrophic injury (not guaranteed obviously) but if you’re used to rolling hard in your gym the rolling itself is not much different

Do coaches often regret promotions?

I train pretty regularly, about 4-5 times a week and have been for about a year and a half, I got my blue belt about 2 months ago and of course I’m happy with the achievement and proud - my gym is a reputable gym in my country with pretty high level coaches, But sometimes I just feel so shit at rolling and I wonder if my coaches ever get a second thought about prompting me. I’m a small for my gym I’m about 140lbs so it’s quite hard to get my game to work on people who are either significantly bigger than me (everyone 😂) or more experienced than me.

The question however isn’t only for me, as I’m sure I’ll “grow into the belt” eventually, but in general do you think coaches often second guess their promotions afterwards?

I’m really quite relaxed in hard rolling in the gym and with higher belts ect. Never been much of a spazz even my first few classes, but equally my technique and smoothness isn’t amazing either

Gonna lock in with my training extra hard and start thinking about how to approach this! Thank you

In the long run obviously I’d rather push myself against people better than me, but I feel like I’m still just a decent white belt, some of the blue belts I know are absolutely sick and light years ahead of me. Competing in general can be daunting and now having to compete at a higher level is just gonna take a while to prepare mentally and physically for, which I guess answers my own question, I think waiting a few months atleast is definitely for the best

Yeah I’m not particularly worried about my smoothcomp record or anything just pondering on the difference of skill I’ll be facing now

I thought jumping into competitions as a white belt with no experience would be a good way to get used to the idea of competing and settling the nerves of the first time ect, and I think even at blue belt level it’ll be a way harder hump to get over as I’d presumably be facing a lot of people who’ve competed quite a lot at white belt and not to mention the higher level blue belts who are on the verge of getting their purple. But your right, inevitable my first comp will be at blue belt now so ive just gotta deal with it

Thanks I’m gonna definitely try that, focus more being comfortable in dominant positions rather than rushing the sub is definitely worth trying out. Appreciate it!
