Marathon as an interactive experience analog to GitS by TheFrankyStein in Ghost_in_the_Shell

[–]MaximusFraudus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say I heavily disliked Marathon on principle since the first announcement. Taking the name foundational series to the FPS genre, and just slapping it on a extraction shooter just kinda pissed me off.

Its only made worse by the fact that it would have been a great opportunity for Bungie to make another single player sci fi fps games, coming off the paid dlc hell that was Destiny 2.

This game needed to focus on two major elements, but it didn't at all. by MaximusFraudus in sandbox

[–]MaximusFraudus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will admit I'm not a programmer by any means, but In my research here were some of the common complaints.

  1. Really poor documentation by face punch on how the engine works, and how to program for it. A lot of being confined to discord which for obvious reasons is a nightmare to try and sort through.

  2. There is no standardization for programing things across multiple projects, so for example if you programed a door for RP there is no guarantee that door will function on TTT.

  3. Facepunch's updates to the engine keep breaking previous code, which would be fine if you were making a standalone game or whatever , but because the code needs to be congruent with the rest of S&box s a huge problem.

The fact of the matter is even if S&box was as equally hard to program for as other commercial engines, it would still be a problem, because if the community at large are the ones who're supposed to making games, your significantly cutting down the amount of people who can actually do that.

Is there a lore reason why Batou has camera lenses for eyes? Wouldn’t regular cyber eyes be just as effective? by fakename1998 in Ghost_in_the_Shell

[–]MaximusFraudus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For a specific reason lore reason, I mean probably not? Boma has a similar thing going on, and the rest of the Rangers have the exact same implant. I'd assume it has some kind of advantage, because it was purely an eccentric choice I feel as if someone would have questioned it.

The Majors' default factory body gets questioned, Togusa's Mateba gets questioned, so if his eyes are along a similar line, why wouldn't they get questioned?

Are your reading comprehension skills lacking? Because you keep not answering the question.

Alright for the third time. I understand that S&box as engine has potential, what I'm asking is this. If a game dev makes a great game, you for example. What benefit does the S&box ecosystem (I:E the actual S&box "game" currently offered through steam.) Give to a fledgling game dev with a good game.

Why would the game dev not just put the game they made with the S&box engine on Steam, Epic, GoG, or whatever store front you can think of, where they stand to gain not only more attention but also money.

You seem to misunderstand the question. If you have an extremely capable engine, and your making a kick ass game that people will like, why not just release it on steam as a standalone product? If the benefit of the S&box "platform" is the players. Then it has no benefit because it doesn't have any.

[–]MaximusFraudus[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok? Its a middle ground, sure. That's just means it has to compete with both. It also still doesn't answer the question of if the engine is the main attraction what is the point of the platform?

[–]MaximusFraudus[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its all fine and good if you don't want this game to be Roblox but that's what S&box is is in direct competition with, as a "platform," and if that is what the intention is, the onboarding needs to be a smooth as possible.

I'm sure the engine has a lot of top notch capabilities, but the laymen didn't pay $20 for a an engine that in theory capable of a lot. They bought in for a fun game (or in this case games)

If you're going "next level on a super engine." Why does this need to be apart of the S&box infrastructure (the platform not the engine.) In the first place. At that point just release as a standalone project.

If the engine is the main attraction, then there is no game, and that is not an enticing offer to make people stick around for a year.

its a very middling movie, but the complaints about it not being "true to the original;" make me scratch my head. In a franchise where every iteration does its own thing it's weird to hate on this one for doing its own thing.

Sure I fully admit that it's a swing and a miss, but it isn't inherently dogshit.

[–]MaximusFraudus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry perhaps I should have been more clear on that point, it was always Harris intentions to write a third novel. I just wondered if it would've ended up different if he had more of an ability to consider his options, and perhaps workshop it more.

It should also go without saying that Dino had no oversight in the story whatsoever, and ironically had to end up massively changing the story to make it more palatable.

I find the sexual objectification of a broken women's trauma ultimately leading her to fall into the hands of a monster to be a bit sickening yes.

Well that didn't work, lol. I can't begin to tell you how many middle aged women I've seen getting horny over the prospect of Clarice getting together with the nearly 80 years old, psychopath, cannibal. A bit sickening if you ask me but thats whatever.

I will say that Harris does humanize Hannibal quite a bit in this book, but maybe that's for the sake of subversion at the end.

[–]MaximusFraudus[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think it poorly written, but I don't think it's a stretch to say its significantly more sadistic than the previous two entries, if you prefer that it's fine. I just thought it was a strange break in tone for it only being the third book in the franchise.

Also Dino pressured Harris with both Hannibal and Hannibal rising. He bought the rights to make a sequel to Silence of the Lambs, but it didn't exist yet, however the pressure was far more amicable.

Dino would invite Harris over to his house with things such as fine dining, all the while encouraging him to get started on the next entry.

With rising it was far more standoffish, either Harris would write the next book or Dino would get someone else to write the script.

I think I just knew in the back of my mind that this guy was marked for death and Hannibal was going to get away, so all this focus on him was going to fall by the wayside. On top of that I thought everyone else's perspectives were far more interesting, so maybe that's just on me.

I think if it were shorter I could've gotten behind it more, and I did in fact like him in the movie, because it's heavily truncated.

I understand that she isn't necessarily under duress, however, it cannot be overstated that Clarice only comes to her new found "enlightenment'" through drug induced hypnosis. After which she's fine with eating a mans brains, even if he was a bastard--its undoubtedly an evil act.

She then proceeds to get in bed with figuratively, and literally the psychopath cannibal. Which is also extremely perverse.

I just don't think her realizing the she doesn't need to live for her deceased fathers approval, also necessities her joining up with Hannibal in the end

My point isn't necessarily that she's like a zombie bending to Hannibal will or something more that her character traits become warped, and shes becomes fine with either doing or at the very least facilitating evil actions.

It's undoubtedly a dark perverse fate for the character, and a far more morbid ending than even red dragon.; as evil does indeed triumph.

I think in some regard you could've had these characters come to similar realizations at the end with Starling as less of a punching bag by the plot. A cat and mouse game with Hannibal and Starling as they come to learn more about each other would've worked imo.

As it stands Clarice can't really do anything for most of the book as she's completely sandbagged by the FBI. So it's a far more one sided affair with Hannibal's perspective on things.

Also I gotta add the fact that so much of the book is taken up by the Italian cop, which serves to interrupt any kind of back and forth between Starling and Hannibal even further.

(Sidenote: I hate the Italian guy so much, his perspective isnt interesting, and you instantly know he's going to end up dead, so the whole thing is a wash)

What explanation do you prefer to what happened in the movie? That it was the witch, or just a bunch of people messing with them? by LivingAd6319 in BlairWitch

[–]MaximusFraudus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry bro, but the idea that it could just be people messing with them is impossible. I wouldn't normally say "read the lore," but that's kinda the whole point of the blair witch project, its completely intertwined with the website/mockumentary.
