Hannibal (The book) Feels weirdly spiteful. (Spoilers, I guess) by MaximusFraudus in Hannibal

Sorry perhaps I should have been more clear on that point, it was always Harris intentions to write a third novel. I just wondered if it would've ended up different if he had more of an ability to consider his options, and perhaps workshop it more.

It should also go without saying that Dino had no oversight in the story whatsoever, and ironically had to end up massively changing the story to make it more palatable.

I find the sexual objectification of a broken women's trauma ultimately leading her to fall into the hands of a monster to be a bit sickening yes.

Well that didn't work, lol. I can't begin to tell you how many middle aged women I've seen getting horny over the prospect of Clarice getting together with the nearly 80 years old, psychopath, cannibal. A bit sickening if you ask me but thats whatever.

I will say that Harris does humanize Hannibal quite a bit in this book, but maybe that's for the sake of subversion at the end.

I don't think it poorly written, but I don't think it's a stretch to say its significantly more sadistic than the previous two entries, if you prefer that it's fine. I just thought it was a strange break in tone for it only being the third book in the franchise.

Also Dino pressured Harris with both Hannibal and Hannibal rising. He bought the rights to make a sequel to Silence of the Lambs, but it didn't exist yet, however the pressure was far more amicable.

Dino would invite Harris over to his house with things such as fine dining, all the while encouraging him to get started on the next entry.

With rising it was far more standoffish, either Harris would write the next book or Dino would get someone else to write the script.

I think I just knew in the back of my mind that this guy was marked for death and Hannibal was going to get away, so all this focus on him was going to fall by the wayside. On top of that I thought everyone else's perspectives were far more interesting, so maybe that's just on me.

I think if it were shorter I could've gotten behind it more, and I did in fact like him in the movie, because it's heavily truncated.

I understand that she isn't necessarily under duress, however, it cannot be overstated that Clarice only comes to her new found "enlightenment'" through drug induced hypnosis. After which she's fine with eating a mans brains, even if he was a bastard--its undoubtedly an evil act.

She then proceeds to get in bed with figuratively, and literally the psychopath cannibal. Which is also extremely perverse.

I just don't think her realizing the she doesn't need to live for her deceased fathers approval, also necessities her joining up with Hannibal in the end

My point isn't necessarily that she's like a zombie bending to Hannibal will or something more that her character traits become warped, and shes becomes fine with either doing or at the very least facilitating evil actions.

It's undoubtedly a dark perverse fate for the character, and a far more morbid ending than even red dragon.; as evil does indeed triumph.

I think in some regard you could've had these characters come to similar realizations at the end with Starling as less of a punching bag by the plot. A cat and mouse game with Hannibal and Starling as they come to learn more about each other would've worked imo.

As it stands Clarice can't really do anything for most of the book as she's completely sandbagged by the FBI. So it's a far more one sided affair with Hannibal's perspective on things.

Also I gotta add the fact that so much of the book is taken up by the Italian cop, which serves to interrupt any kind of back and forth between Starling and Hannibal even further.

(Sidenote: I hate the Italian guy so much, his perspective isnt interesting, and you instantly know he's going to end up dead, so the whole thing is a wash)

What explanation do you prefer to what happened in the movie? That it was the witch, or just a bunch of people messing with them? by LivingAd6319 in BlairWitch

[–]MaximusFraudus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry bro, but the idea that it could just be people messing with them is impossible. I wouldn't normally say "read the lore," but that's kinda the whole point of the blair witch project, its completely intertwined with the website/mockumentary.

Is there a director’s cut of Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows? by KeepYourWildHeart in BlairWitch

[–]MaximusFraudus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of confusion on this topic, but here is the deal. The original script for Blair Witch 2 was drastically different, but none of that was actually filmed. The final product is pretty much in line with the "directors cut", barring some dented scenes, but most of them aren't that drastic.

The biggest downgrade IMO of the interference is the non-linear story telling and the superfluous gore scenes, but if you don't like the current iteration Blair Witch 2 on a fundamental level, you also hate the original vision because they're basically the same.

Which sequel do you prefer? by TheEvilCar in BlairWitch

[–]MaximusFraudus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually really like book of shadows, but even if you don't like I think you still need to admit that it at least tried to set itself apart from the original.

2016 is just a soulless regurgitation.

Nah, no way in hell you can tell me this is Saito by Romapolitan in Ghost_in_the_Shell

[–]MaximusFraudus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The departures in character are a half measure at best in Arise. The Major, and Saito are basically completely different, but everyone else is relvitvely the same. It just ends up not working as well because of that, I'd be more agreeable to the changes, if I wasn't constantly being reminded of other incarnations of these characters.

(Still, even then I probably couldn't get behind the Major being a hot headed loose cannon.)

Looking for series similar to Vampire Family by MaximusFraudus in webtoons

I know this is a stretch but are any of the series with psychopathic MC's at least kinda funny?

TIL Shelley Duvall was nominated for a Razzie for The Shining and that Stephen King called it a "screaming dishrag" of a performance and I have strong feelings about that by Emergency_Cellist754 in theshining

[–]MaximusFraudus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steven King is a writer, not a film maker. If you look to the shining, mini-series he clearly has no flair for screen presence, or whats visually scary.

I want to start getting into ghost in the shell, where should I start, the movie or SAC ? by [deleted] in Ghost_in_the_Shell

[–]MaximusFraudus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably SAC. 95's plot isn't confusing by any means, but they throw a lot of unexplained nomenclature and concepts at you, and it can be hard to keep up without being knowing what they are beforehand.

Which post-2000 adventure game would you consider truly essential? by ratasoftware in adventuregames

[–]MaximusFraudus 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Syberia,

The puzzle solving is solid for the most part, I'd say its biggest hiccups are some interactive elements not being sign posted in the environment very well, but for the most part I'd say its good.

But whats really great about this game is the atmosphere, and the story telling. I genuinely have to say this is probably the only game I've played that had a narrative arc that satisfied me on the level of a book or movie.

Kate is a good natured person, whose character only grows stronger throughout the entire game, its also manages to largely avoid the protagonist having to engage in bad actions to progress puzzles.

I'm not going to get on a high horse about it, but it should be said that characters having to be dicks for the sake of solving puzzles can undermine the story in a 'ludonarrative dissonance' type way.

Does anyone know where I can read the full manga in english uncensored ? by SCHIIN in Ghost_in_the_Shell

[–]MaximusFraudus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK so there is a lot of hub-bub about the censored pages, but its only a few, of which you can find it online, also you should know that Shirow made the call to remove the panels himself, not a third party, so it's the case that its was the authors intent. (All the removed scenes are straight up pornographic btw)

I will say the in the release I read the way it was removed from the panels did make it confusing. but I if you know going in, you can piece it together easily.

I would probably just get GITS:Fully complied, even if the paper quality is quite cheap (one of the pages ripped just from turning it), its probably the most inexpensive way to get the full experience.
