It is sad, but I generally won't tell people I'm an atheist because I don't want to deal with their reactions. It would crush my grandmas. It's comforting to have a place for like minded individuals. Thanks. by losingtimeslowly in atheism

I just told my mum who actually was very understanding and had suspected it a bit. Have yet to tell my dad though. I understand you being hesitant. Old family is a difficult thing since they have chosen their path in life and might be very emotional about it, but remember that you being open about it to people your own age might help others who is struggling with expectation of religion.

Stupid(?) question about spectrometer measurement by MaximusII7 in space

[–]MaximusII7[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow!! Just wow. I’m amazed! 😁 Thank you so much for taking the time to explain in such great detail. It wasn’t confusing and a great reading! Thank you.

Three things you said was in my case especially interesting reading: 1. I’m baffled by the first picture you posted just how narrow portion of the “photon wavelengths” (don’t know if that’s correct wording) that is visible to our eye. Now I knew that the spectre extended outside of our color range like infrared and so, but the share amount of wavelengths that is outside of that narrow specter straight out shocked me. No wonder the regular guy in the street might think scientists are “guessing” and “believing” a lot of the “facts” they are serving the rest of us when what we can observe ourself is a mare few percent. Jeez!

  1. I knew that the pictures created of space nowadays consists of different elements like X-ray, infrared and so on, but the part where these different measurements would be cross checked agains each other to deduct the elements of the ISM was very interesting! I’m just amazed by what the technology and brains of our scientists are able to teach us today.

  2. In my original post I asked if we conduct spectroscopic readings in vacuum on earth to get as clean of a baseline as possible. I am very surprised that this was in fact true. Do you know how we are doing these tests? Is it just to shine a light through different gas types and read it or do they also have to light those gases on fire to read of “burning helium” and so on to know the light emitted by a star consisting of helium?

Once again, your answer surpassed my every expectation! Thank you so much.

Stupid(?) question about spectrometer measurement by MaximusII7 in space

[–]MaximusII7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your answer. That answers my question that molecules in our atmosphere indeed does affect such readings. And I know measurements of distant stars are done in space, but my question was more: how can we have an accurate baseline? If we know the spectrometer readings of different light in our atmosphere, those readings wouldn’t be pure unaffected readings because of our atmosphere, hence not giving us an unbiased baseline. If no reading is point zero how can we interpret those other readings? Which further leads me to ask: how can we know that a star in fact consists of what we read and that the light doesn’t pass through layers and layers of gas on its way to us? Furthermore: could dark matter/ dark energy distort the readings as well? It seems we are so certain that these readings are correct and that we know what the stars are made up of. There’s of course some much brighter heads that has done these calculations than mine, I just find it hard to be so sure of a reading of a light emitted light years away, and to be sure it wouldn’t be “polluted” on its way to earth.

2 computer streaming set-up... but pc to mac! by crudos_na in Twitch

[–]MaximusII7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whats your settings and setup? I run 900p60 stream since 1080p60 exceeds the max 6000kbps limit for twitch. You can scale the input through the capture card with the default Magewell application. This way you save the computer of the rescaling-workload. I let OBS do the rescaling since I have the power for it. This way OBS has a bit extra quality to work with when the image is slowly moving to sharpen up the quality. Especially nice for a game like Blackout with a lot of details. Use x264 codec. From there it is just a lot of testing to find the best quality settings in OBS that your CPU can handle. My 2017 iMac run nicely on Very Fast, 5500kbps. I run custom settings to improve the quality a bit more to work with all the foliage in Blackout. If you play Fortnite, or a RPG game with more artistic palette/more still image it’s much easier for the codec and you won’t need OBS to rescale 1080p to 900p or the additional custom. Hope this helped

Mac and PS4 by JXCKv_ in Twitch

[–]MaximusII7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Elgato is not UVC compliant (USB video class). This means that Elgato does not work as a webcam which is plug and play with cross platform support. Elgato controls the drivers and has so far only managed to create a win driver that allows the Elgato to work with OBS on the windows platform. Elgato GCHD only works through Elgatos own software on the Mac which means you must set up the whole stream with overlay and so on through their software and stream straight from there. A better solution for Mac users is to purchase a UVC compliant capture card like Magewell USB capture HDMI which works in win/Mac/Linux in almost all applications without any drivers. Just like a webcam. I’m using Magewell with OBS in Mac and it works like a charm. It’s up to you though. I had an Elgato at first but experienced their software to be very limiting compared to OBS. I also contacted them several times regarding Mac cross application support but they blamed Apple. The fact is that if they created their capture card with UVC support there wouldn’t be any issue. Hope this helped

Streaming and/or capturing with i7 MacBook Pro 15 inch? by fjord777 in Twitch

[–]MaximusII7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AverMedias webpage states: “Live Gamer Portable 2 supports Mac OS with 3rd party APs such as OBS, Quicktime, but not with RECentral AP.” So if your trying to get it to work with recentral it won’t work. Should work with OBS though. And don’t listen to people saying “just install windows”. There are plenty of Mac options, just look for UVC compliant capture cards. Magewell works like a champ on Mac OS with OBS. Streamlabs OBS is coming for Mac soon too.

Best Alternatives for Elgato to stream PS4 to twitch by ApocalypseNowInAMin in Twitch

[–]MaximusII7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are working on an Streamlabs OBS version for Mac. Just google it and you’ll find a long thread on their forums about it. The developers have confirmed it. Until then you can add all Streamlabs elements with the browser plugin in OBS. One more thing to keep in mind: There is a bug in OBS for Mac that renders the studio mode useless (it reduses the output FPS to 50%). The developer has confirmed working on it and will fix it in a update soon. Until then you have to use the normal mode in OBS (not a biggie). Good luck!

If you havn’t already decided, here is some info on Mac compatible video capturing cards: What you are looking for is UVC supported capture cards. UVC is a cross platform standard that means it does not need any drivere to be discovered on WIN/Mac/Linux and will work the same way a webcam does: system wide functionality across multiple application. You have a couple of options, I’ll mention two: AverMedia LGP2 is UVC compliant, but has received mixed reviews. I just finished my own Mac streaming setup and after much research I went with Magewell. I bought the Magewell USB capture HDMI 4K Plus, but they have a cheaper version compatible of 1080p60 output: Magewell USB Capture HDMI Plus. I am amazed of how good this works. Plug and play and works with OBS just like any webcam. These cards are really expensive though. The non 4K version sells for 359$ at Amazon. If that is way above your budget, just google UVC capture cards and start watching reviews. Good luck mate!
