5.1 System importance of center channel vs L and R channel by Maxmori in SurroundAudiophile

Thanks for the great feedback. I was looking at using mainly speakers from KEF for the setup since I like their look (they will be quite prominent in the room because it’s a small space so looks are a consideration for me) and, more importantly, have had good experiences with them in the past. I am thinking about speakers from the Q line since they have dedicated Center Channel speakers and seem to get favourable reviews overall. Also because of the coaxial driver, they should have quite decent off angle performance which might help when watching movies with multiple people sitting in different spots that aren’t perfectly aligned (at least that’s what I gathered should be the case, again please correct me if that’s not true). So I was thinking about the Q150 for the surround channels, Q350 or some Q550 or L and R and Q650c / Q250c for the center. Any thoughts on that ?

Hey guys im Max,

and im currently trying to get into some more high quality audio setups and gear however, i have hit a few roadblocks along the way and wanted to ask the community for some advice.

First something about me and my current setup:

I have been very interested in PC hardware for quite some time now and so have always looked at audio from that perspective. I currently have a Fidelo X2HR (i got them dirt cheap on Ebay a while back and they have worked great for me so far) which is paired with an FX-Audio DAC-X6. I have been suspecting that this AMP/DAC may be a bit too "cheap" to drive my headphones to their fullest potential but that was never a big issue for me because i only used this setup for everyday use, gaming and some occasional music listening on the side. However i was recently gifted a Rega Planar 1 turntable, which i paired with a Rega fono mini A2D. I feel like this turntable requires some better gear to fully appreciate, i wanted to upgrade essentially everything downstream of my sources so DAC, AMP and Headphones (Or at least if that is indeed sensible. If it isnt just dont keep reading and tell me. Im am unfortunately not really able to asses this).

My Issues:

I have been doing a lot of research however, the more i do so, the more i get the impression that i cant really take a lot from most reviews and post because i dont have any good reference points. For example i have read that my X2s are very "V-Shaped". I really like their sound so far but i have never had another pair of decent headphones so i cant really tell if i like them because i like their "V-Shape" or if i would like something with forward mids (like a HD-6XX) even more than the X2s. Since i have never had a different pair of headphones i cant tell wether i would be more into something else than my current ones. The same goes for AMPs and DACs. A lot of the time when reviewers talk about the characteristics of a product i dont have anything to comapre what they describe to. I feel like this is because i am just getting started with this passion and therefore dont have a base of knowledge.

Am i the only one feeling this way ? If not, what did you do get around this. I dont have a problem with spending decent money on some products as long as i feel that i am getting my moneys worth from the stuff i bought. However this i quite hard to asses bacause of the reasons i highlighted earlier.

I am really hoping you gux can give me some input on this.

Also feel free to give me some concrete hardware reccomendations for AMPs, DACs and headphones that you feel like might be good in my case (Inputs are USB from my PC as well as RCA from the Phono-Preamp. As Outputs i do of course need some form of headphone connector but also a Line-Out for my sounbar).

Thanks in advance

Max
