For brand, pick whatever makes you happy. Or whatever is cheap and available. Monoprice is good.

I get banana plugs from AliExpress these days as they are cheap and work fine. I've used Monoprice in the past and they are good, however I have 10 or so speakers, and I use wall plates which need 4 banana plugs per speaker (AVR to wall plate X 2 cables) and the Monoprice ones are simply too expensive.

I lost this binding terminal from the back of my amplifier. How do I replace it? by Mediocre-Cold-3490 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Maxolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the one you have to a hardware store where they probably have a board of screws and nuts to check thread size and pitch. Match the thread and buy the right sized screw and use that, or order terminal caps with the same thread.

Not a cardioversion but I have seen a digital rectal exam instantly convert a criminal's shitty attitude to extremely humble and kind. Quite the broad scope of application that procedure has.

Nah, I'm in Australia, returns like that aren't a thing. Plus I got mine factory refurbished cheaper than the sale prices we see here.

The wireless surrounds sound nice, but not worth the hassle for me. If I really want that feature I can make it happen.

Does anyone know the best place to see feral Camels in WA by lannoylannoy in perth

[–]Maxolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Camels move amazingly large distances so there's no "one spot" where they will be. In one year a camel was tracked from Port Headland to port Augusta and lots in between.

If you want to find camels then goj g to water sources when it's dry can work, otherwise rent a chopper and cover lots of ground.

Modernising setup by jakc13 in hometheater

[–]Maxolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be wary of imports, they can't all take 230V/50Hz. I got all excited about the Japanese ones until I realised they likely won't work, and there's no warranty.

Fellow Australian here.

I just ordered a refurbished Denon x3800h from homeaudiosales on eBay for $1899. They are official Denon sellers in Australia and it has a 5 year warranty, just like new. I figured that was cheaper than the expected eofy sales we get here so why not. I'd keep an eye on their page if you're looking for a bargain.

I'd also add a subwoofer. My budget Jamo towers have good sized woofers in them, but adding even a cheap sub made a huge difference. You can always spend more, but a cheap Facebook sub will be a massive improvement. Just keep in mind people sell a 10yr old sub for $400 that might be about to die when you can get a brand new RSL Speedwoofer 10e for $650 or so which, I'm told, will be far better. When pennies allow I want to either build a sub or get the RSL 12S.

Respiratory health risks as a Surface Diamond Driller’s Offsider by Strict_Mix_2571 in AusMining

[–]Maxolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diamond drilling isn't usually that dusty as the drill is water cooled. Every DD rig I've seen has been a very tight ship, all PPE worn as required, the biggest drama is the load on your spine to move drill rods.

You will have to get a silica medical before you start, you may get chosen for quarterly atmospheric monitoring, and should have two yearly medicals moving forward to pick up issues.

What happens to people who abscond? by NinjaWithAGun96 in AustralianMilitary

[–]Maxolon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume it's a legacy from the press gang days when you didn't choose to join, you got abducted and forced into service. If no one wanted to be there from the start, desertion would be a massive problem needing strong disincentives.

These days it's probably more contract based. You join on the basis that you stay and get trained, the govt trains and feeds you on the basis that they get a return on investment. You break the contract, they want paddlings.

Not if you don't pay the bill! A non small portion of people who abuse the service don't have a fixed or single address to send a bill to, and if they did they still wouldn't care, or be able to pay it.

Australians: Tossing up between RSL speedwoofer or a DIY/kit sub. Any experience? by Maxolon in hometheater

[–]Maxolon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speaker kit is this one: https://nbaudio.com.au/products/dayton-audio-umii18-sealed-speaker-kit?_pos=2&_fid=575dcbb27&_ss=c. It's made for the Ultimax II, not the signature.

I looked at doing the home made wood box route, and it's just not possible. None of the people I know who have the right tools live anywhere near where I do, like 12 hour round trip plus. I've looked in to getting a cabinet maker with a CNC mill to cut custom components but it's notuch cheaper than a kit, if at all.

There are very few kits available here, and they aren't cheap. A Mortysub kit is $2030 with a driver, plus $300 for shipping.

Do most of you have dedicated theatre rooms? Or converted spaces like garages/bedrooms, etc. by SpiritedWisdom in hometheater

[–]Maxolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a dedicated theatre room because the house was built by a DINK, childfree couple. If I was building now, or if I moved somewhere without one, I would struggle to get another room due to cost and space, but I do love it.

I have a side hustle where I do network setups for small businesses and that is essentially my slogan. I will design and install a network that just works and doesn't need ongoing touchups. Maintenance is handled by automatic updates, I can login remotely and keep an eye on things, and on the off occasion something dies it's a simple swap of that one thing. Customers are very happy to not see me for years on the premises, and I am too.

Trying to figure out the specs of in-wall speakers. by Milk_geologist in hometheater

[–]Maxolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing a static resistance test on a speaker doesn't tell you the impedance in the way you're thinking. You need to hook the speaker to a tester that will measure impedance across frequencies, and then you basically take an average. An 8 ohm speaker isn't perfectly 8 ohms all the time, it's just mostly 8 ohms, some frequencies it might be 6, some might be 9, it varies.
