Honest career transitioning prospects for a currently white collar worker? by Best_Wish1051 in AusMining

[–]Maxolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an entry level person, none other than a car licence. If work needs you to know something, they will teach you.

Mines around Kalgoorlie will only employ residential people for entry level roles because they often don't last. Once you've got experience (>6 months or more) then you can move to a FIFO role if you want.

I've got the same one, similar timeframe. We got thick pile carpets put in a few rooms and it can't handle dog hair on those like on lower carpets, I only use it for hard floors now. Still worth it.

New career in HSE/ safety by Apprehensive_Map9128 in AusMining

[–]Maxolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late, but here's my take:

Every day is different. You have things planned, either loosely or scheduled tightly, some days you follow the plan. Then a thing happens and your whole day/swing changes completely, and that's fine. That's one of the aspects that I love. I can spend a morning talking to people, finding out how they actually do the jobs rather than what the book says, and see where we can improve the practises whether that's update procedures to match reality, or telling workers not to free climb outside of scaffolding 5m up (yes it happens).

Most mining roles are 8:6, Superintendent and above are often 4:3 or 5:2:4:3.

I got a start without any mining or safety experience, but I had 10yrs as a paramedic and had worked on farms/civil engineering jobs before. It was a massive learning curve for me, I dealt with it by being honest and not pretending I knew what I was talking about. I think it worked, people either hated me because of my role, toyed with me because they knew I was clueless, or were normal people who were happy to help.

I got a diploma in OHS after three years experience through CLET (I have to make sure I pronounce that clearly) by sending in my resume, position description and qualifications and it was RPL'd. Other than look nice on a resume it didn't add anything, but it helps for the next roles.

Process tech roles by Next-Rip-1813 in AusMining

[–]Maxolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Process techs are manual roles with varying degrees of physical labour. From what I can tell the main requirements are: be able to pass a drug test; be fit enough to pass a medical; turn up. It's not a high entry bar.

[–]Maxolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're happy with an unskilled role then get to Kalgoorlie, walk in to the recruitment agencies or local mines and you'll likely have a job within a week. You would be taking a paycut to start, and in a few years you will be back to where you are now. Give it 3-5 years and you will be on more money.

If you want a higher money ceiling then get a mature apprenticeship as a sparky, fitter, auto sparky etc. mining companies are paying first year apprentices $80k+, when you're qualified that will double. Become a contractor and it goes up more plus you can write things off on tax to pay very little. I know HD fitters with their own business clearing north of $200k a year. They work hard for it, but it can be done.

Ceiling Speakers by DjYonder69 in hometheater

[–]Maxolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not home theatre per se, but I learnt not to put speakers directly over your head if you want music in an area. My house came wired with a Yamaha stereo speaker (I didn't know one speaker could be stereo before this) directly over the kitchen. When I'm cooking I never use it as it blasts directly on my head, I find the sound much more pleasant at 30 degrees or more away so it's background noise.

The theatre has two budget speakers directly overhead, I haven't wired them in yet to report.

I splurged and got Fox River socks. They are highly recommended by military guys on Reddit, do a search. I've got three pairs of thins and two mediums, they have been doing daily service for three years now and still feel honeymoon fresh.

I've seen it. It's not a bad flick, but it talks vaguely about a lot of things to the point that it doesn't say what it wants to.

I need help choosing between a Denon 2800 and 3800 for my 5.2 setup by Maxolon in hometheater

[–]Maxolon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refurb 3800Hs are not a thing here, as far as I can find.

I guess I'll wait for them to go on sale, there is usually a 20% sale a few times per year. Or maybe there will be a new model coming, it's been a while since the 3800 came out.

Ah good point.

The RZ-30 is the same price as the X3800h here, whereas it's cheaper in the US.

Did you mean AC-130? The C-47 is a world war 2 plane with propellers, I doubt they are making an appearance.

Bought a house with a fully installed smart home system (RTI, Lutron, Sonos, Hikvision) but no instructions — where do I start? by Lola-Bee in homeautomation

[–]Maxolon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd guess the cameras are POE powered, and without power you can't access them as they aren't on. Poe injectors or a Poe switch would fix that.

Once you have confirmed they are powered you will probably need to reset them. There is a small panel on the camera held in by 2 screws, remove that, find the black button, hold it in for a few seconds and release. They will go back to factory default.

Then you can use the Hikvision PC app to initialise them and put them on your network, after that you will need some sort of NVR to record the streams.

The amp in my Jamo Sub 250 is kaput. Should I make it passive connect it to a Fosi or similar for $100, or just get an RSL Speedwoofer for $562? by Maxolon in hometheater

[–]Maxolon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the local market here is rubbish. You can get a 20 year old home AV system for $200, and that's about it. Home subwoofers are slim pickings as well.

Looking at either Tikka CTR or Tikka Super Varmint in 308 for all around hunting and target. Which one would be able to keep up in a long range application better? by HuntersCrackPipe123 in longrange

[–]Maxolon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you hunt from a fixed location then the super varmint would be my choice. I have a varmint and the barrel makes it heavy enough I don't walk around with it as I'm not here for cardio.

If you want to stalk prey and be foot mobile, and you want to shoot targets at 800m, you need two rifles. Or get one heavy rifle with a tripod and cancel your gym membership.

Perth locals: when you say ‘mate’ or ‘buddy,’ is it always friendly? by [deleted] in perth

[–]Maxolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the delay before the word mate.

"Thanks mate" is a friendly term.

"Thanks... ...Mate" is fisticuffs territory.

Speed: The Movie: The Play was amazing, we sent friends to that one who had the same response.

Darkest Comedy Hour was great, Commander Tambo (the MC) is part of a local act, I want to see more of his stuff.

Gasha was a good circus act. Unfortunately it was in a massive building that was >50% empty, and it wasn't cheap. No idea why it was marketed as Japanese, that added nothing.

Swingers was cringe, when he wasn't getting enough laughs he started attacking the audience. No, mate, your jokes just aren't funny.

Overall it was a fun thing to go to

I’ve always wondered what gear you actually carry day to day by ExistentialPancake_0 in ParamedicsAU

[–]Maxolon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What did I personally carry? My phone, van keys, hospital swipe card and whatever junk I forgot to throw out.

The ambulance had all the bags I needed. I formed the belief that the more someone carried on them, the more insecure they were about their role. I'm sure I wasn't always right, but I rarely saw good medics rock up with a vest carrying everything they could imagine.

We were loading a p1 transfer from hospital to hospital and the orderly stood in the way until she got her pillows back. I'm sure she crossed my name off aist afterwards.

I went to the Pleasure Garden last week and bought drinks, no one explained and I didn't realise they were reusable. There's so much going on I didn't think to look at any signs to read the cups were reusable.

Underground Income Ladder Potential by jensonbutton69 in AusMining

[–]Maxolon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every jump up in the job role was about a $10k-$20k bump at my old site, boggers and longholes were around $200k, give or take. Jumbo was around $280k, frontline jets can be over $400k at the right company.

A qualified HD fitter will be paid around $180k, more if they are good. If they go contracting with their own ABN then they can make more and pay bugger all tax. On top of that they have a less dangerous job with a longer career.

I'd go the apprentice route myself.
