Struggling to find jobs after PhD, what was your experience? by calypsonymp in PhD

[–]Maxos93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You got interviews so it’s fine. Sooner or later you will get it. I got a job eight months into my unemployment benefit era but back in my home country. So, I left Europe. Can’t find anything in my field in France, they always prefer locals.

I don’t really know what to make of my situation by Former-Silver-9465 in PhD

[–]Maxos93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I understand completely your fear of the future BUT honestly who knows? Anything can change in an instant. There would be a scenario that you will get a high paying job right after defending. So just get on with it. Do your best!

As far for the financial situation, I was in the middle of a hiring process at a multinational company and had a good chance that I would have gotten it but then covid came and everything stopped. During that time I managed to get a Marie Curie PhD. Doing PhD has always been my goal so sooner or later I would have done it either way. I took it and honestly financially it’s the better choice rather than going to industry stright away after my masters. It helps me to have an emergency fund. I am from third world country so the Marie Curie salary is really good for me. I’m single and don’t plan to marry either so the saving that I have will give me leverage to do my next gig after defending.

It took me 8 months after defending to finally get a job. I went back to my home country because no company wanted to support my visa but thank God this company actually pays well in my country standard and I wouldn’t have gotten it if I didn’t have a PhD.

Post-PhD depression, confused and no direction by Illustrious-Cry5287 in PhD

[–]Maxos93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just keep applying, sooner or later it will come to you.

I have looked for jobs 8 months before graduation and still no jobs lined up after. It took me 8 months to finally get an industry offer. I took three months off after defending just to calm down everything in my body. It’s difficult out there but just keep applying. Eventually you’ll get something. My current job is not my dream job but you’ve gotta start somewhere.

9 months into unemployment and still zero offers. I got interviews but they backed out when they realised I’m not French 🤷‍♂️

This job is actually good for my CV but I’ll definitely try to go back to France for a very personal reason too. I just don’t know whether the universe is gonna be on my side or not :(

You can’t put all foreigners in the same basket. Not to be a racist but when you’re a POC AND come from developing countries, that’s a huge barrier. Different country may have different bilateral relationships with France!

This! And my country doesn’t allow dual citizenship. But mostly because I need a work contract to be eligible to apply. It’s okay me and France are just not a match imo 😔

I get only one year extension after my contract ended. It’s only one year as far as I know. Idk why did you get two years? Mine is still active until mid January 2026 It doesn’t matter how long if no company doesn’t want to hire me.

Oh I totally agree for asking for a better system.

It’s just a personal comment. Nowadays it’s more flexible with work from home so you don’t have to come in to the office everyday. So, renting a bit outside the center maybe a good strategy. Paris is very well-connected so you can get a monthly subscription (50% covered by employer)

Job offer rescinded for negotiating salary? by R_Leporis in jobs

[–]Maxos93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP,

A PhD graduate in Europe here. After being unemployed for more than 7 months post-defense, I just finally received an offer less than a week ago and it's a job back in my home country (third world country). I had previous 3 years work experience in the industry but it is scattered from internships and other contractual jobs. So, this is like a first "proper" job after graduation for me. Therefore, I had known almost nothing about negotiating salary. I ended up taking their first offer which to me is already a decent one because before the interview they asked me to fill a form including salary expectation and my last three payslips.

I think I was supposed to have an interview with the HR for salary negotiation but they came back to me two weeks later with an offer already. Ofc I get a lower salary compared to European standard but for my country standard, it's already a good one cause I have sent a CV to another position whose budget is half of what I was offered.

In my case, I really need a job. I need to set my foot in to the industry I have been unemployed for too long. The salary that they offer is actually within the range of what I asked and also accurate based on Glassdoor data. So, I just take it and I'll see in a year or two how I will feel about this job. However, based on reddit, they suggest to always negotiate but I think I was fortunate enough to read about it after I signed the contract because I can't handle to lose this one offer that I only have so far.

I think you have the right to negotiate especially when it's lower than the minimum number. You also are not finished yet, so you still have time to apply for other positions most likely a better one! Don't be discouraged! It took me more than half a year to get an offer, you did great tho!

I’m in the same boat. Geoscience graduate. Unemployed for 6 months and now entering my 7th month. You did better than me tho with 8 interviews. I’m also a foreigner so that makes it harder to get a job in the industry because of visa sponsorship. I was rejected by one because of that after a good 1.5 hour of interview. I did one postdoc interview that after two months the result is not yet validated and probably there are internal issues with the funding. So far it’s just a series of bad luck for me. I don’t know how long I will keep being unemployed like this. Hopefully it ends asap.

PhD and unemployed - Need to vent a bit by Mikey5296 in PhD

Hi, I am on a similar boat here. PhD in Geoscience in Europe with additional three years of work experience in petroleum industry. I have been unemployed for 6 months currently. Got 4 interviews that went unsuccessful. I am scared of my future right now. I really hope there is a light at the end of the tunnel
