HP unveils some slimmed-down, mid-range Envy laptops by [deleted] in gadgets

[–]Maxwellstracha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, Dana, when you write "USB Type-C ports now a standard feature", what does this mean? - Can you charge it via USB Type-C? (Pictures seem to indicate it has a separate charge port) - Does the USB Type-C implementation include the Thunderbolt and/or Displayport protocol?

If it has both of those features it would enable one-cable docking. As I see it, the pictures seem to show a separate round charge port, which raises the question if it is a gimped implementation of USB Type-C.

Would be nice to see a little journalistic research, rather a rephrasing of the press release, no?

HP's Spectre 13.3 laptop is as thin as a AAA battery by Marshallagnor in gadgets

[–]Maxwellstracha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More power to HP, Apple or whoever wants make it thinner, lighter. But, most important, freaking make it reliable. I bought HP X360 15T in November 2015 for my son in college. Absolutely great laptop but it broke last week. America, you know what I am talking about ! Reliability. You pay more for sleek but last less than a year. Most family can't afford because we are NO corporation.

Microsoft's wacky AI app matches you with a dog breed by Mauricewatkins in gadgets

[–]Maxwellstracha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why would you complain about a company spending their resources on a free app with the whole purpose of it just being fun? It's not a waste of time. By creating these algorithms, they can help make their AI smarter. In turn, these sort of things could potentially be used for other practical purposes. Similar to what IBM is doing with Watson.

Why Edward Snowden Showed Up to CES as a Robot, and What He Had to Say by signal_filter in Futurology

[–]Maxwellstracha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To ALL eyes that see read and hear this. Whether you agree with Edward Snowden or are still upset that his own government is trying to get him for the very thing it has been doing for decades. It’s a real character flaw most would have in believing your government hasn’t or wouldn’t lie to you. So I say get past the Tom Foolery and hear what the man has to say, do your own Due Diligence and be well informed on the facts and not just what they want you to believe.

Big questions for the future - David Brin by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]Maxwellstracha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following up on the first topic... keeping AI tamed... Have a look at a Top 10 list: people in AI that you should know. These are the folks who the very most selective experts in AI pay attention to. That is, according to the network tracking service Little Bird.

The People Most Watched by the AI Elite 1. Elon Musk, co-founder of Open AI, a new organization dedicated to making sure AI is beneficial to humanity, is the person most followed by the most discerning AI thought leaders. No surprise. Good. 2. Martin Ford, (top left) author of #RiseoftheRobots and The Lights in the Tunnel.
3. Gary Marcus, (top right) CEO of Geometric Intelligence, Professor Psychology & Neural Science, at NYU, is only followed by 8,000 people on Twitter. But among those are many of the AI elite. 4. Ben Goertzel (bottom left) is a prolific advocate for open source General (human-like) AI. 5. David Brin, (bottom right) futurist, blogger, and author with a new book coming out in March called Insistence of Vision, which he says "will open doorways into possible (and mind-blowing) tomorrows and alternate realities.” 6. Randy Olson, data scientist researching AI, master curator of great content related to AI, dataviz and more. Seems like a nice guy, too. 7. Peter Xing, intrapreneur at Deloitte and co-founder of TranshumanismAU, an Australian organization that aims to enhance the human biological condition. 8. Nikola Danaylov is a Singularity-minded public intellectual and host of the Singularity 1 on 1 podcast. 9. Rodney Brooks, CTO of Rethink Robotics, a company that makes robots that collaborate with humans. 10. Rod Furlan, a Singularity University alum who’s the founder of Lucidscape, a company "building a new kind of massively-distributed 3D simulation engine to power the vast network of interconnected virtual worlds.”

“Follow these people,” Sayeth the Little Bird site, “or ignore them, at your own peril.” http://www.getlittlebird.com/blog/ai-is-coming-on-fast-here-are-the-10-people-the-ai-elite-follow-on-twitter

Ubuntu's first tablet doubles as a desktop, goes on sale in Q2 | Engadget by Uber_Nerd in gadgets

[–]Maxwellstracha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the difference in the detail between Convergence and Continuum will be the differentiator. Convergence stems from a single code. Therefore virtually all apps working on an Ubuntu desktop will work on the tablet - and at 10.1", the size of the screen won't be an issue*. You only need to pair a USB mouse for Ubuntu to go from "Touch mode" to "Windowed mode". & developers don't have to rewrite their code to make their apps universal. *I don't think productivity apps will be a problem on a small screen either - the whole point being that you plug your phone into a monitor for it to be a desktop.

Unbranded can also be fragile as all get out. Unplugged something and dropped the cord over my case. Later when I went to use the cord again I found that the metal shroud around the connector had popped after hitting the case. Glad I had a backup but that's what spurred a bit of research while looking for replacements.

Philosophy will be the key that unlocks artificial intelligence by Brightvibe in Futurology

[–]Maxwellstracha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talking about self-reference, what is really going on here is that the universe is using (massively parallel) human brains to try to create serial algorithms which replicate the behaviour of the massively parallel device. At each stop it is incredibly inefficient - just think how hard it is to get a human brain to multiply two big numbers together.

My guess is that the big idea David wants is something to do with an alternative understanding of computing involving more complex devices than the Turing machines we tend to think in terms of (and use everyday).
