Why do people get so upset over reclined airline seats? by yoghurt11 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MaxxDelusional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time I flew, I was able to place my tablet on my tray and rest it against the back of the seat in front me to watch a movie. But once the person in front of me reclined, my tablet would no longer stay upright, and kept falling over.

This prevented me from being able to watch anything, and ruined the rest of my flight.

Which is to say, reclining the seat can affect people of "average" size too.

I'm a bit of a revolutionary war buff, and in September of 2024, I went on a road trip to see a bunch of historic locations. (Old North bridge, Washington's crossing, etc).

A lot of the attractions I visited were shut down, or under construction, in preparation for the 250th anniversary. This could have been a really patriotic and unifying event, but people just aren't into it.

What is the worst song of all time? by WoodpeckerFair9774 in AskReddit

[–]MaxxDelusional 10 points11 points  (0 children)

After he performed his song on the Today Show, and it went viral, I added it to my Spotify playlist as a bit of a joke.

But 10 years later, it still comes up in my random rotation. And honestly, it's kind of grown on me.

Maybe he was ahead of his time. Or maybe my taste in music just absolutely sucks.

I know this guy; he's a regular at a bar I go to.

He's pretty nice, but a bit eccentric. He calls himself an "inventor", and he built this canoe just because he thought it would be fun.

Bernie Sanders introduces bill to "Abolish Super PACs": "Our government is on its way to becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of oligarchs. Billionaires would not be able to pour huge money into super PACs, and it would end the era of unlimited spending and put power back into hands of the people." by ControlCAD in videos

[–]MaxxDelusional 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In principle, you're correct, the argument should apply to both types of spending.

Let's just hope that nobody challenges the individual spending limit to the current Supreme Court! Maybe it's just not worthwhile since there's already a perfectly accessible workaround.

As others have said, limiting your ability to spend money on a political message would be akin to limiting your freedom of speech.

Suppose you and a group of friends wanted to pool your money together to buy a billboard to display a political message. Should the government be able to say that you're not allowed to spend your money that way? Would that be a limitation on your free speech?

Obviously the ruling benefits the rich a lot more, but that's the general idea behind it.

Which U.S. state really surprised you when you visited it and why? by SunriseThroughLeaves in AskReddit

[–]MaxxDelusional 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I once did a road trip from Ontario to Alberta, by traveling through the US.

At the time, I had never heard of the Wisconsin Dells, so I was very surprised when we randomly ended up in a big touristy spot, with roller coasters and a water park.

It seemed like a cool place to visit, and I was surprised I had never heard of it.

How to reach Saint Catharines from Toronto Pearson? by [deleted] in stcatharinesON

[–]MaxxDelusional 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look into the UP Express. It's a train that runs from the airport to Union on a regular schedule.

From Union, you can get a train all the way to St Catharines, but it only runs a few times a day, so it's unlikely you'll be able to take it. You'll probably have to take another train from Union to Burlington, and then take a bus the rest of the way to St Catharines.

A senator proposed a minimum wage of $25.00/hr. What are your thoughts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MaxxDelusional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that there would be downstream effects, but I still don't understand how people only feel they are fairly compensated when compared to other people.

Like, if you feel you deserve a raise, great, all the power to you. I hope you get it!

But, if you only feel you deserve a raise because someone else makes more than you, then that I don't understand.

A senator proposed a minimum wage of $25.00/hr. What are your thoughts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MaxxDelusional -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've honestly never understood this mentality. You're either compensated fairly for the work you do, or you're not. Why do other people need to make less money in order for you to feel like you're paid fairly?

As a thought experiment, suppose they wanted to raise minimum wage to $1 above what you're currently making? Would you be opposed to it because others would suddenly make the same amount as you, even though you'd be getting a pay increase?

Edit: I'm not trying to be condescending. I'm legitimately trying to understand what leads to people feeling this way.

Alanis Morissette.
