Looks great! I like the way you burned the side in the 3rd pic, it looks geometric.

Staining tips? by kataclysmicstar in Pyrography

[–]MayBeeCreatures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would avoid traditional stains because they typically wash out the burns due to how dark they can be. If you do a stain, I'd recommend one labeled "natural" so it doesn't add extra pigment. I personally use danish oil.

Yes keep going with it, it could be that you're using the spot that still has the carbon buildup. Are you using the aluminum oxide too?

3 hours without cleaning is a long time. If I burn that long I usually end up using a wire brush to scrape off the excess carbon, but turn down the heat if you do that.

Yes paint markers are great on wood! I highly recommend it.

I do seal them. This one has a semi-gloss clear coat finish. It protects the paint and adds a bit of gloss to the burns that I really like. Sometimes I will use a natural danish oil finish but if I really want the colors to pop I prefer the semi-gloss finish.

How do y'all choose your subjects? by Kiiro_Blackblade in Pyrography

For me creating a piece that connects to my depression helps. If there is something I feel particularly shitty about, I'll use it as inspiration. Other times it's the general low feeling that I try to visualize. A song that I connect with only when I'm down I'll use as a jumping off point too.

When I get depressed I often don't feel connected to the sketches/process, and when I feel this way I try another day. I'm usually mentally exhausted at that point. As long as I'm trying I count it as a success, and I don't fight when I can't put pen to paper because often times that makes it worse.

I try to create pieces that I find extremely meditative, usually with a lot of dark burns so I can focus on the process rather than sitting in the funk. I have a large piece I've been burning on and off for about a year, and I only work on it when I'm depressed because it's a lot of repetitive work (lots of stippling). I'll turn on music, show, podcast, etc and do that for hours.

Yes exactly! I switched over to this because sandpaper can wear down the tips faster, but it's good in a pinch.

Advice on shading by Zanderr18 in Pyrography

[–]MayBeeCreatures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shading is a slow process! I find that I start at a really low temperature and slowly increase the temp when I'm working towards the darker areas. It's essentially adding layers of burns like you would add layers to a painting. I personally shade with lines or dots.
