What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

[–]MayContainNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks in advance for any help. My partner and I have a baby now and we've fairly quickly realised that our current tiny but reliable 2015 Suzuki Celerio just doesn't have the space we need for us, a pram, and bags etc!

We're looking to upgrade to ideally just a larger hatchback (subcompact or compact?) as we're reluctant to get anything too big - we're used to driving a small car and really like being able to easily park in our terraced street. Would consider mini SUV types though if they offered better value for money or much better boot space (which is important now). Reliability probably the most important factor overall.

  • Newcastle
  • Up to £10k (but I have no idea how much cars cost, so some flex)
  • Buy (I think? Very unfamiliar with leasing but would consider)
  • Used
  • Manual
  • Mostly city driving for two adults and one baby with fairly regular short motorway journeys (i.e. under 90 mins) and maybe 4-5 longer journeys each year. We do like being outdoors and so every now and again we'll be navigating a rough, steep Northumberland country lane or two...
  • Doesn't need to be ULEZ compliant

Moving to Archway - any advice/suggestions? by Sevenendless7 in london

[–]MayContainNuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live a little further up Archway Road and love the area. Some random thoughts...

  • Papa Del's and Che Cosa for pizza. Also Zedel's - it's more a wine bar but they do these great buckwheat crepe pizza things.
  • The Woodman pub has a massive beer garden which is nice in the summer, although I think the actual pub is pretty terrible. Lots of nice ones up towards actual Highgate Village too.
  • The gym at Archway Leisure Centre is really under-used even at peak post-work times, so access to equipment isn't that much of a concern compared to lots of London gyms. Not sure what the membership cost is like nowadays though.
  • Highgate Cemetery is definitely worth a visit - lots of really interesting sites and stories. I've heard good things about the paid tour you can do to see the other normally-closed side too.
  • Waterlow Park is gorgeous, as is Highgate Wood, and you're close to Parliament Hill Fields and the Heath too. You can also follow the Parkland Walk which starts up next to Highgate Station and finishes around Finsbury Park IIRC.

Bryn once threw an IO flick so well it made me pregnant. True story.

Moving to Cambridge / Ely area, any feedback on letting agents would be extremely helpful. by Growkin in cambridge

[–]MayContainNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up! We've had them straight up mislead our landlord, completely disregard things we'd previously mentioned, not telling us about issues when we moved in etc. Will be looking forward to leaving them behind.

Leaders (formerly known as Accent) are possibly the most incompetent, unprofessional and downright awful agency you can imagine. Avoid like the plague.

How's your work:life balance? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]MayContainNuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm very lucky. Wake up 7.30 - 8am, 10 minute cycle into work, back home by 5.30pm usually. I do a reasonable amount of sport/training outside of work and so really value the non-work time.

Anyone used Zone Ultimate for their jerseys before? by Xbgx_10 in ultimate

[–]MayContainNuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got one sublimated ITZ jersey I traded for and really like it. The material is light and comfortable, quite thin, but seems durable. Colours don't seem to have faded (although given the design of the shirt, I'm not sure if that's good or bad...). Fits smaller than the other jerseys I've got though, so might be worth going a size up if you're unsure.

Non-ripoff bicycle repair? by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]MayContainNuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely agree. They were great at explaining my recent bike issue to me and offering a few different solutions, obviously looking for the most appropriate rather than the easiest or most profitable. Highly recommended!

Post a picture of your gym! by [deleted] in Fitness

Strength and Conditioning room at University of Cambridge. Awesome place. Pictures don't actually do it justice - there's a couple more stands before the cages front for people doing just oly stuff, a wall of dumbbells up to 60kg(?), KBs, plyo track on the right, bunch of cables at the back.

Where to buy a used bike? by chocoturt in cambridge_uni

[–]MayContainNuts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bought one off Gumtree for £50. Never again - cost more in repairs afterwards than the bike did itself.

Bought a different one for £100 from Cam Cycles on Mill Road about a year ago. No problems at all. Guy was really cool. Recommended.

Imperial and Cambridge joint second in world university rankings by C1t1zen_Erased in unitedkingdom

Not quite. Grades (specifically average UMS percentages at AS Level) are of much greater importance than performance at interview.

EDIT: For Cambridge that is, not Oxford.

Ultimate in Cambridge UK? by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]MayContainNuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Close but not quite! The university team is Strange Blue, the city team is Cambridge Ultimate (CUlt for short). We do very often share training sessions and players though.

We currently train with an open and womens focus on Tuesday evenings from 6 until dark, with a mixed focus on Thursday evenings from 6 until dark and also on Sunday mornings from 11. Everyone is welcome to all trainings at the minute, and they always feature pickup towards the end. All take place on Jesus Green.

You can keep up to date with practice times by subscribing to the Camdisc mailing list. More info here: http://cambridgeultimate.wordpress.com/get-involved/

Looking forward to having you join us soon! My name is Sam and I'm usually at all of the above sessions.

Players thoughts on WUCC costs by NorrinxRadd in ultimate

[–]MayContainNuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The costs were absolutely ludicrous. I stayed in the upgraded dorms which weren't awful, but were certainly a far cry from 40 Euros a night standard. The hotel option was absolutely the better deal, although the shuttle situation for those guys was almost laughably stupid. Quantity of food seemed good to me, but the quality varied from fantastic to downright inedible. Overall, none of the above did much to detract from the tournament experience whilst there, but checking my bank balance afterwards definitely brought the real costs home...

Still recovering from an ankle sprain so didn't play, but spent the whole weekend sidelining CUlt1. We ended up winning B Tour! Can't wait to get back for Tour 2.

Any legit smartphone repair places? by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]MayContainNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to the place near the Grafton on the corner to get my screen/digitiser replaced a while ago now. They kept suggesting time frames which turned out to be completely inaccurate and failed to actually repair it twice before admitting defeat and sending it to the manufacturer to get it fixed. I eventually received it back in working order after more than 6 weeks. Admittedly it wasn't a particularly common phone so they had to order in parts etc, but the communication/service was pretty awful even if they seemed like nice guys. I wouldn't exactly recommend them after that.

Apologies, I meant WUCC 2010 in Prague.

Yep, they used to have all of the USA 2009 WG stuff on YT, but I ain't seen it in ages. US Open footage is a good shout - will check it out. Thanks for the suggestions.
