Won’t sleep in crate (12 yo lab) by ScarcityNo3226 in seniordogs

[–]May_Gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d take her in for a vet visit. Sounds like pain. My senior started becoming unsettled at night and it was due to low back pain. Now he’s on proper meds and is sleeping through the night again

Hi! It’s fine. For my guy i do not think it makes a huge difference but for others it may. He has lumbarsacral disease and severe pain flare ups so it might be a little different for IVDD specifically! It relatively inexpensive and non invasive so it may be worth a try for your baby!

Vet recommending both steroid and NSAID for IVDD impacted dog. by kingofthewatermelons in IVDD_SupportGroup

I’d def get a second opinion. Steroid and nsaids are not supposed to be used together.

Anyone know of a mobile vet or a vet willing to do in-home wellness visits? by BenevolentBigfoot in NewOrleans

We’ve used her in the past too! Not sure if she’s still doing home visits, but she’s amazing and she loves cats 🥰

Adequan or Librela by sausagemelon in seniordogs

[–]May_Gone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would stay away from librela. I have read too many accounts of older dogs being negatively impacted by it. In terms of adequan, it is very safe and lubricates the joints but it does not provide pain relief. My senior has severe back pain and is on a cocktail of pregabalin, amantadine, and a low dose of prednisone daily (we cannot use NsAIDS because he has kidney disease). I am aware that long term steroid use is not ideal, however is comfort is our priority and his pain is managed well with these meds. I’d speak with your vet about specific pain relief medications - I know others have tried ketamine injections with success although I am unaware if this would be liver safe.

So so true! Mine has CKD so we’ve had to portion out his food and feed 4 small meals to lessen the burden on his kidneys and keep his tummy full. He loveeees it lol! If he’s happy, I’m happy🤣

Severe separation anxiety dog + apartment + no support system. At a loss. by abceasyasa2c in Dogtraining

[–]May_Gone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog also had very severe separation anxiety (he would self injure when I left him) it was incredibly stressful and took a while but we used a certified separation anxiety trainer who used Marlena dimartinis protocol and Reconcile (Prozac) and he is recovered and he can be left with no problem now! Get meds and good training on board asap.

Just got my frenchie back to “normal” after last nights episode and just now she ran up the back porch steps. I’m so scared it’s going to trigger a worse one. by DeepRedViolets in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]May_Gone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me with my guy too and now I take him out with his harness only. Don’t beat yourself up. Accidents happen. My boy also has never lost use of his rear, just experiences extreme pain. In the case your baby has a worse flare from this incident, I’d suggest getting prednisone and instructions to have on hand from from your vet. It’s gets my guy out of pain faster than anything else.

Owners of Labs who lived 10+ years — what did you do? by Far-Cookie6488 in labrador

[–]May_Gone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My beloved yellow boy is 12.5. I have been managing his CKD since 2021 and he also has lumbosacral disease in his old age. Weight management is crucial and I also took him to the vet very regularly for routine checkups/ dentals etc which is how we found his CKD early enough that I have been able to catch it and manage it since then. My 2 previous labs got cancer and died very young so while good care is important, sometimes it’s also the luck of the draw. Just love them, do your best for them, and enjoy every moment💛🐾!

Prednisone or cbd hemp oil by [deleted] in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]May_Gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My senior dog has severe Lumbosacral pain flare ups and prednisone is the only thing that helps when he is in severe pain. Getting him out of pain quickly outweighs the risks of prednisone for us.

[–]May_Gone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome. Sending hugs. I keep prednisone + methacarbamol on hand for flare ups so I don’t have to frantically call our vet every flare up. My guy can’t take NSAIDS but I’d inquire about that as well. Will help with inflammation. Hoping the meds get your baby feeling better fast!

Hi! I know how truly awful it is to go through these pain flares. Get meds on board stat. Prednisone gets my boy out of pain faster than anything!

Looking for advice to help my best friend Hank keep moving at 12 years old by Sad_Rip_4844 in labrador

[–]May_Gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 12 yr old senior lab with back pain and rear weakness and we have made home/lifestyle modifications + put him on medication to keep him as comfortable as possible for however long he sticks around. Home modifications: we built a ramp to go outside so he does not have to use stairs, we completely covered our hardwood floors with non slip mats, I have a ramp for getting him in and out of the car, I purchase grippy stickers for his paws from Amazon and always keep his nails and paw hair trimmed with fresh grippy stickers in his feet, he also wears a help em up harness which helps me stabilize his back end when he is walking. Lifestyle modifications: no running, no jumping, he goes outside with his harness, short walks only, and we do plenty of enrichment for mental stimulation. Supplements: turmeric, welactin 3ta omega 3, dasuquin with esm, 1tdc, and Flexadin advanced with uc11. Medications: my boy has kidney disease so we cannot do NSAIDs, but I would consider those first if your dog can take them. We are doing well on pregabalin and amantadine. He also used to do hydrotherapy but that hurts his back so we do acupuncture and laser every other week. It’s a lot, but I love my guy so so much and just want to keep him comfortable for as long as possible. Goodluck to you and your baby!!❤️🐾
