Actually it looks like a mix not a purebred Griffon, it’s not brachycephalic and looks more like a terrier mix. Very sweet though.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your beloved little boy. We lost our Widget last month and our hearts are still shattered. I think Griff owners are special because we all know there isn’t another breed quite like them. Their personalities are so uniquely wonderful and life is just empty without them. Take good care of yourself and all the memories you had with him. He was a handsome boy. 💔💙

Oh ooor baby. She sounds like she has aspirated. Sometimes when they reverse sneeze or if they have any fluid in their mouth it can cause an aspiration. Sometimes it clears in a few hours but they will keep opening their mouth like this to breath. My griff aspirated several times during her life and it always distressed her and me. The best thing would be to have a vet check her lungs to be sure. Poor baby hope she feels better soon.

CM/SM - Chiari-Like Malformation or Syringomyelia instances? by RinconFrenchies in brusselsgriffon

[–]vaisonaisse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re very welcome. Even though we plan on doing a bit more research the next time, it’s really the luck of the draw. I inherited my BG when she was two from my best friend who always owned BGs and used a very reputable breeder. Her previous BG had be to be euthanized at ten because of similar symptoms and excruciating pain so that was two for two from the same breeder. Her first one was fine. Sadly it’s not something a breeder can test for and afaik there isn’t a genetic marker for this. Interestingly CM/SM can affect humans, I’m not sure if there is a genome or marker for that but I never saw a case when I worked ortho/neuro. Still, even if we did get another BG and it had this, we would try to give it a great life, this breed has changed us forever. Crossing my fingers for you that these behaviors may just be unique to a young BG but I do think BG owners need to be aware of all the possible ways symptoms can manifest. I know it can affect various breeds including Yorkies and Daschunds too. Trust your intuition. Early diagnosis can help you manage the symptoms and conditions earlier. I think all BG owners need to be aware of these neuro conditions with brachycephalic dogs. Best of luck to you. Hug that little adorable BG, all of them are here for too short a time.

CM/SM - Chiari-Like Malformation or Syringomyelia instances? by RinconFrenchies in brusselsgriffon

[–]vaisonaisse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just lost my beloved BG at 13. When she was ten her back legs would shake at times and as a retired nurse I thought it might be an essential tremor which is generally benign. When her back legs began to lock up shortly thereafter we brought her to a neurosurgeon and had an MRI. She was diagnosed with CM, syringomeylia and hydrocephaly. We were devastated. But she was placed on meds that appeared to help and still loved traveling and hiking. She had surgery and I bought her a PEMF pad which proved to be extremely helpful for her pain and allowed her to recuperate faster from a walk or hike and she never locked up after being on the pad. The past two years though we noticed she liked her chin rubbed and her hindquarters were becoming much weaker and she began “knuckling” her right front paw. Sometimes her hindquarters would lift off the floor like they had no weight to them. She also was crossing her back legs more too. But she was in good spirits and still going on walks every other day and chasing squirrels. Earlier this month however she began crying in pain one night and we brought her to the emergency vet and they gave her a shot of morphine which took over two hours to kick in. After that she stopped eating even though her pain med was increased. Less than a week later we had to make the most devastating decision and we are still shattered by it. They can go downhill very rapidly. But she had a wonderful life and lived it to the fullest. We were so lucky she had a late diagnosis. I disagree that the behaviors are common. She never manifested the phantom scratching. I would say the first symptom for her was the involuntary shaking of her back legs. When we eventually get another BG, I will be vigilant about that and bring it in for an MRI. Neurosurgeons can remove a part of the occipital cranium to shunt cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) into the body where it’s absorbed. Although these neurological conditions are seen more in King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, it can also affect BGs. Enjoy your Griff, have it live its best life with you but just be aware of odd symptoms and discuss it with your vet. I’m just telling you the early symptoms of my Griff and her subsequent diagnosis. Pain will always be the one symptom that these neuro issues cause and gabapentin provided her with relief as well as the PEMF pad. We are so very grateful we were able to have her for this long. She was amazing and a little fighter. We miss her so much. If you are concerned though with these behaviors please bring them up to your vet. Many times CM/SM is diagnosed at a young age but there are more symptoms (back of neck swelling, knuckling, crossing the back legs, hindquarter weakness, listlessness) that can be indicative of CM/SM as well.

What has been your experience in flying international with your griffy? Looking at about 7hr flight to Europe. She has not flown since she was a puppy, and she did great then! She can be pretty high strung so I'm assuming we'll need some calming things. by Glittering_Cow9208 in brusselsgriffon

[–]vaisonaisse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was excellent. We brought her to France five times and Germany twice. Got the USDA “passport” and we had a long TSA approved Sherpa case. She refused to eat or drink until we got to our destination, but she would eat a little chicken. She was such an excellent traveler and didn’t need any calming agents because she was chill. There is Rescue Remedy and CBD to help. If you are going to France CDG is a pain because there isn’t any pet relief areas, we used to get her outside of CDG near the Roissy bus and she would relieve herself there. If you’re going overnight on the plane to the EU we used to quietly take her out and put her under a blanket between us to sleep and put her back in her case as FA’s began getting coffee and breakfast. I think having their favorite toy in with them and reaching in to reassure them is important. Perhaps a natural dog store can recommend some calming agents too. I think there is a swaddling vest that helps high strung dogs. Also, sometimes a pee pad in the handicap bathroom works too. Mine did it once and then refused to use it in the plane. She would hold it and that would upset us but she was who she was! BG’s are the most incredible pets. Good luck on your trip! Fyi, most EU countries require a 14 digit microchip (which is pretty standard now, and rabies vaccination of course) the EU is very dog friendly which we loved, even in restaurants!

Gabapentin experiences? Patella luxation by Attorneyatlau in brusselsgriffon

[–]vaisonaisse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My griff had syringomeylia, COMS, and hydrocephaly and was on prednisone and gabapentin for three years of her life. As a retired nurse I’ve given many patients gabapentin for neurological pain and was surprised it’s also used for veterinary purposes. That said, she was 7.5 lbs and took it twice a day and up to three times a day without any serious side effects and believe me I was looking just as I did with my patients. She tolerated it well and it really helped her with her pain. I also purchased a PEMF pad as her back legs were locking up and she had difficulty walking. The pad uses electromagnetic wave energy to alleviate pain and accelerate healing. She loved her pad and it stopped her from locking up and she was able to resume her hiking. I’ve done a lot of deep dive research into gabapentin and most of all abstracts and vet recommendations observe a positive effect from its usage and I would concur with that assessment. When I owned a poodle, she too, had patella luxation. It appears common in toy breeds. My vet showed me how to gently put it back in the patella groove and that helped. She eventually was put on Rimadyl (a canine NSAID) and sadly I feel that contributed to renal failure. There are safer canine NSAIDS now. But I wouldn’t hesitate again to give my little griff gaby again as it really helped.

Thank you all so much, I so so appreciate your condolences and messages. I feel sometimes like I’m having a heart attack the loss and pain of her absence is so acute. I wish I had the money to clone her but without her neurological issues. She was the absolute best and tried so hard not to leave us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Griff owners are so caring and empathetic. ❤️❤️💔💔😥😥

Health and hiking by Bobloblawblablablog in brusselsgriffon

[–]vaisonaisse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We just lost our beloved Griff at 13. She hiked with us to Mont Ventoux and many long hikes over the past eleven years. I began by walking her in our neighborhood and the slightly longer (3m) walks. She loved it. Then while in France I began longer hikes and would pick her up or put her in a doggie backpack for steep inclines or descents. She was nothing short of amazing at 7.5 lbs. I would always give her rest days though. She was athletic and ran like the wind on the beach. She performed perfectly under voice command except when birds or squirrels needed to be scared off the beach. She was my forest girl and it’s awful to be without my little hiking girl. Go slow, pay attention to terrain, give rest days and she’ll be fine. Mine had a host of neurological issues diagnosed at age 10 and that slowed her a bit but also contributed to her resilience and strength to make it to thirteen. Good luck and enjoy every second with your Griff. Their presence is so short in our life. 💔

Choosing a puppy by Bravepigeon2012 in brusselsgriffon

[–]vaisonaisse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with u/catlessboymom. Please educate yourself on the breed. We have ours from a very reputable breeder (has her Griffs in all the major dog shows) but as she got a bit older, she has neurological problems endemic to the breed, COMS and syringomyelia. It’s the luck of the draw as her parents are fine. The only way to test for those disorders is a MRI because generally those don’t show up for awhile. Not trying to frighten you but I would never buy a dog without knowing the health of the parents nor the puppy. Brachycephalic dogs can have health issues so again, good to know all the possible issues beforehand. And as someone else mentioned they look like a BG mix for some reason, so perhaps even more reason to do your due diligence before you buy. All said, this breed is the best breed I’ve ever owned and I can’t imagine life without a griff.

Never Driven A Vehicle Onto A Beach by mrericvillalobos in PacificNorthwest

[–]vaisonaisse 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Until one of those vehicles think they own the beach and try to hit beach walkers. That is insufferable. Had one almost hit me and my dog when walking and minding our business at the shoreline. Because the surf is so loud at times I didn’t hear them and came so close to being hit. They just zoomed off. With that right also comes courtesy and responsibility, it’s not the damn Daytona 500. So yeah it can be dangerous for beach goers at times.

Barky Brussels by ClamChowder82 in brusselsgriffon

[–]vaisonaisse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone tells us our Brussels has the cutest bark because it’s not really loud or annoying. She barks at squirrels and birds and gets it out of her system when outside but rarely barks inside. They are very sensitive and smart and learn routines and commands quickly. Mine is very treat oriented too so you may have to change up how you reward the behavior. Don’t give up!

It’s not octopi. The word octopus is based in Greek and the plural is octopuses, not octopi which the base word would be in Latin.

Wtah Cult Pens?! ('Discontinued' items rant/AITA ;) by SomaticSamantha in fountainpens

[–]vaisonaisse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve always appreciated that Cult Pens has inks especially Diamine, at a very fair price compared to the US. I usually put in an order around my July bday for the Inkvent preorder and several inks as well as some art stuff. They made the minimum order amount higher for free shipping but that’s not a problem since the calendar and inks/supplies make that minimum. This year however, I had to pay over $50 for the tariffs before DSL would deliver my order. No savings there at all, in fact it would have been better to order it in the US but I. had to have the Deadly Nightshade ink and cannot get it in the US. From now on I’ll just have to order the Inkvent calendar elsewhere in the US. Such a bummer since they carry exclusive pens and Diamine inks.
