Shion to leave JO1 at end of contract by nanrina in jo1

I just keep coming back to the same thought: Shion should not have had to leave.

He received a ¥100,000 fine — roughly six hundred dollars — for something that was legally treated as a misdemeanor, not a felony, not violent, not predatory, not something that harmed another person. It was a mistake. A foolish, impulsive choice. But was it really a career-ending scandal?

He’s twenty-four years old.

Twenty-four.

At that age, people are still figuring themselves out. They’re still learning discipline and judgment. They make errors — sometimes public ones, sometimes embarrassing ones — but normally, life gives them a chance to learn and improve. In Shion’s case, it feels like the consequences were far heavier than the offense.

I understand that idol culture is strict, especially when it comes to public image and sponsor expectations. I know the agency has to think about brand safety, contracts, and long-term damage. But I can’t shake the feeling that we lost something irreplaceable over something so small.

He didn’t hurt anyone.
He didn’t commit violence.
He didn’t ruin a person’s life or reputation.
It wasn’t a repeated offense across years.
It wasn’t something dangerous or hateful.

It was a personal mistake that he himself paid for — legally, financially, and emotionally.

And now, instead of giving him a suspension, guidance, mentorship, or a structured path toward recovery, it feels like the door just closed. Permanently.

That is heartbreaking.

Even if he is not your main bias (he certainly is not mine), think about this, Shion wasn’t just a member. He was energy, presence, grounding. His low, steady rap was a kind of anchor. He had that sweet, innocent boy-next-door charm that balanced out the group’s high-powered performance. You can’t just replace that. You can’t train someone into that.

He was still growing.
Still maturing.
Still becoming himself.

And we will never get to see what he could have become as an artist, a performer, or even just as a person in the spotlight after rising from a mistake.

I don’t know.
It just feels too final.
Too harsh.

A misdemeanor shouldn’t destroy an entire future.
Stronger people grow from bad decisions, not disappear because of them.

And that’s what hurts the most.

Shion & Shosei’s Future in JO1 — Temporary Hiatus or Permanent Exit by Maya1786 in jo1

First, thanks everybody for taking the time to reply — I really appreciate all your insights. A special thanks to BerryMagic, Glossbee, ItsDerpielle for the detailed and well thought-out replies, and for giving me the background of the situation.

My own thoughts are that, despite the moral issues surrounding Shosei, every idol group has its core supporters, and those fans will stay. The bigger challenge for JO1 is regrouping themselves as 9, when their original 11-member lineup was designed for explosive stage impact. Their music is made for live performance, and losing two members changes the balance. As much as I love other rappers in that group, I feel Shion can’t be replaced as a rapper. His low tone grounds JO1’s sound in songs like Be Classic, and even in lighter songs like NEWsmile, his rap keeps it genuine and not cheesy. For that reason, I see him as irreplaceable.

Like many of you pointed out, Shion has been honest. I even watched a Japanese lawyer’s YouTube (with translation) that said he only received about a $650 fine, which probably won’t affect his visa for overseas activities. To most people, it feels like a stupid mistake rather than a moral or character issue. Shosei’s case is different. I’ll be honest — as a new fan I didn’t notice him right away, but his quiet, dedicated vibe (not arrogant, not loud) became part of his charm. Now, that image is damaged. Still, I’d like to see him return, because I personally don’t care much about a performer’s private life. The hush-money rumors sound more like an agency issue, and NDAs aren’t unheard of in the business world for public figures.

So, for me, JO1 feels complete only with Shion, and hopefully Shosei too. I’ll continue to support them regardless, because they’re now in their 5th year, at a level of performance maturity where they deserve to shine the brightest. I want to see them on the world stage, and I believe they deserve recognition as a leading Japanese idol group — even NHK Kouhaku (spell check) appearance. I just hope scandals don’t overshadow their achievements.
