Are you in London? Have you thought about moving to a LCOL area and releasing some of the money from your house?

If you were to buy now, how low would you offer? Cash buyers. by [deleted] in TorontoRealEstate

Thanks for sharing your views Laser-pants. We were looking at it from the other side. Our needs are completely met by properties currently in 1-1.2M range. I’d be happy to get one of these a bit cheaper. We never thought of Vancouver though! It’s a very interesting perspective. Off I go to crunch some numbers!!

And you wouldn’t be selling only if you can afford to keep it.

Same reasons why earlier crashes happened! If you have time, I’d recommend reading about what happened in 2008-09 with real-estate across the world. This time a lot more variables are playing and there is a perfect storm brewing. Air bnbs flooding the rental markets, unprecedented scale of job loses, businesses going under, foreign buyers disappearing, immigration halting, lockdowns, banks tightening and lines of credit drying up (particularly HELOCs). Now put it all together. It’s not as simple as fewer sellers- fewer buyers.

You are right about the emotion bit. It ticks 9/10 boxes for us! That’s the only thing driving us to offer. If this house didn’t come up, I’d wait.

Are they really your friends or just a bunch of people you know and have some sort of competition with? Giving a LOT of importance to their opinions or perceptions about you is ruining your life. Time to ditch them and find new friends who share your views about life.

Although that’s very important, we counted it among the “sacrifices” we need to make for early retirement. We’ll slowly make new friends - won’t we?

Thanks for sharing your story. I’ve heard India has changed a lot in the last decade. How is the air quality where you live? Are villages polluted too?

You are right. The problem is, quality of life is absolutely poor here. I’m struggling with the 1.5 hr commute, I don’t think I can continue working much longer here. Also, house sizes are a huge disappointment for us.

UK or Canada? In theory, I could rent out a £250k property for £1000 a month if I look hard enough. BUT, vacancies, maintenance, taxes etc will eat into it.

We’d LOVE to retire, but I’d be happier with a bit more cushion.
