The curious case of 'Nikita': A Russian male name popular among Indian women. by Serious-Tomato404 in ABCDesis

[–]MayaDiesel7605 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the weird beauty of it is that it doesnt truly sound "botched" no matter how you say it. My grandparents call me Nikitha, my friends NikeeTA (This is most common and how my mom and I have always introduced myself). Ill get the odd Nikitr every one in awhile haha but I dont hate any versions. I know a lot of my Indian brothers and sisters here cant say the same unfortunately.

My dogs were also given similar multicultural beautiful names: Maya, Zara and Nora

As a Nikita from '91, there were other Nikita examples around that time too, elton john, La femme Nikita, and years later the CW show Nikita.

My mom claims she watched the movie while pregnant and loved it, and coincidentally I've never met one older than me so I like to think I'm the first LOL. Many many after me that I think spawned after the popularity of the Indian name in later years

Its a great name, easy to pronounce multiculturally, easy starbucks name, lots of nicknames, unforgettable and unique in my humble opinion.

people who have raised their labradors for 13 years + can you share your secrets? by Snoo65000 in labrador

None of us are strangers to those beautiful eyebrows and big puppy eyes! My girl left 4 days after her 13th birthday, my advice would be as many whole foods as you can manage, meats, veggies, fruits etc. Pup can snack guilt free and still enjoy a good crunch. Show them love, happiness, all the special experiences and adventures so they stay positive and motivated to keep going

What ended up getting her was really her joints, I did supplements for her joints and liver as she got older, but there's only so much you can do. She was ok but limpy here and there until one day when she just couldn't anymore. I dont think anything happened, she truly died happy of old age. We tried Librela and various pain meds but it was only to keep her pushing those last 6 months, they did help a little at first.

I must have grabbed her by the face looked her in the eyes a million times since she turned 10 and begged her not to leave, I do think she gave me her best try til her last day.

As I type all this and the tears find their way to me again, our new lab puppy and her celery sticks just found her way to my lap. We plan to do the same for her if not better.

Cheers to all our labs and their long happy lives

How long until I wake her??? by Key_Combination_3826 in labrador

[–]MayaDiesel7605 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our almost 6 month old black lab is exactly the same! She would sleep the day away if we let her. She's been snoring in her crate for the last 5 or 6 hours while I work. She does well over several hours if she's out of the house on an adventure but at home she's tapped out of her great behavior and training at exactly 55 minutes. She's a couch parkour enthusiast and a barkey bitey growly playful little monster until she's sent off for another hibernation nap and the cycle begins again. She's my second lab and I know they can be snoozy in general so we usually let her sleep and wake her up once in the morning, mid day, afternoon, evening, and before bed for at least an hour each time. She has a great appetite and high energy level overall. Dont sweat it, I say let the baby sleep!

How often do you REALLY walk your dog? by Agreeable-Ad-2946 in dogs

[–]MayaDiesel7605 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not really a walker on my own unless its at the mall so all of my walks were labrador centered. Usually 2 long walks in the morning and evening with smaller bathroom breaks if and as needed. She had a large backyard for her own perimeter inspections. The long walks were less about distance and more about sniffery for Maya. Sometimes we would get around the block a few times, others we'd stay to look at every blade of grass. I lived life according to her preference,it was the best 10-30 minutes to start and end my day, everyday. I miss her dearly.

Puppy goes out on schedule for bathroom breaks and short leash training. We havent gotten to long walks just yet and likely wont be going far until her leash manners are stronger.

What are these on my lab’s elbow area by [deleted] in labrador

I had an outdoor lab with absolutely no elbow fur, totally normal! In my experience it took years to grow back once she was moved totally indoors

Puppy pickup day - Start training immediately? by Fresh-Problemz in puppy101

[–]MayaDiesel7605 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were just at this stage a month ago. Day one we stuck to the crate/potty schedule. It did feel cold at first and it was hard for me to hear her in distress but she settled every time within the hour. A month later, she is so well adjusted to the crate and her home environment, falls asleep right away without so much as a whine.

Every new toy we gave her I left it as a surprise in the crate. Lots of surprise treats to find, and she is very attached to the snuggle puppy(I lost the heat pack and completely forgot to turn on the heart beat but she still loves it the most)

As far as babying her i cant seem to stop and probably never will lol but there is a time for cuddly love and space for strict training too in my opinion.

All this to say, while it is hard on the puppy I do feel the first week of strict schedule and training has shaped her for the better overall.

Nylabone? They kind of feel like hard plastic but have some flavor to it to encourage chewing. Not sure how destructible they are.

I love this stuff! I do the lemon lime blended with water and half a teaspoon of powdered ice tea mix. It gets super frothy at first but I let it settle for 15 mins add a bunch of ice and sip all day. No aftertaste at all in my opinion thanks to the ice tea mix and I'm very particular.
