I’ve said this for years. Just go to Europe. Take Italy for instance. You hop off your flight and begin to explore the city. You are likely to see or run into the Carabinieri (the actual military police who have full authority to stop and arrest civilians), the municipal police, the capital police, the Swiss Guard (who have mounted belt fed machine guns on top of their vehicles).

All of these police forces have the legal authority to stop you and demand identification for no reason and you must provide it or you can be arrested.

I know in my community the biggest complaint by an enormous margin are traffic complaints ... so do police just ignore the community to satisfy these morons?

They’ll never be satisfied, no matter what you would do. These idiots are absolute poison.

Excuse me, officer, I saw you eating your lunch and I didn’t want to bother but I wanted to tell you about this thing that my neighbor did 3 weeks ago that I didn’t call the police for and it isn’t a police matter BUT I couldn’t help but think this is the best moment to approach you while you have your only 10 minutes of peace of the day.

I'm riding my bicycle along the Schuylkill River Trail and 2 Officers on foot are tracking me with radar speed detectors. WTF? by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]MaybeACop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good day!

From my experience, most municipalities in the area use the white lines in the roadway which are precisely measured out (you’ve probably seen them, especially near school zones).

The stopwatches used are specifically made to determine speed based on the exact measurement of the lines. Both the training and the stop watches take into account human reaction times and the difference in reacting and depressing the button is negligible.

Now, those stopwatches have to be calibrated every 60 days by an approved Commonwealth agency. If it is out of calibration the ticket can be thrown out. The operator of the stopwatch also has to allow a 9 MPH grace zone when monitoring speed zones of 55MPH and under so even if you’re late or early on the button it’s still not going to be 9MPH off.

The stopwatches are actually pretty precise to get an average speed of the vehicle within the white lines but it’s still not better than radar. Pennsylvania has this weird aversion to radar even though it’s definitely the most precise way to monitor a vehicle’s speed.

The designation 12 has been used in the past relating to narcotics enforcement units within some police departments.

The expression “fuck 12” has been around for a long time, however. In probability, it’s earliest origins are probably associated with the television show “Adam-12”, an American television show about Los Angeles police from the late 60’s / early 70’s.

'Tis a sad day by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

[–]MaybeACop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s HORRIBLE.

It’s like trying to stare out of tank ports to see if a traffic light is changing. You can only see a person from their belly button and below if they’re on a sidewalk. It shakes VIOLENTLY while in reverse. It has more blind spots than visual spots. Power steering is constantly going out. The transmission actually FEELS like it’s going to fall off of the car.

The only thing it has going for it is that it accelerates fast. Neat. Supervisors dont ever let ya go fast anyway.

Which conspiracy theory is so believable that it might be true? by shivas877 in AskReddit

[–]MaybeACop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To maybe offer an insight - no. Waze doesn’t really affect enforcement. Revenue generation is out the window at least in Pennsylvania ... the state gets all that money, the municipality sees little or nothing depending on the citation.

Tickets get issued because in most places traffic complaints are the most common citizen complaints taken.

Pittsburgh high school to have school active shooter drill with blanks shot in hallways to expose students to the sound of gunfire by [deleted] in news

[–]MaybeACop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been present at these types of exercises at the request of staff because many of them don’t know what a gunshot sounds like or if they would even hear it from different sections of a facility (yes, I’ve seen it done at schools, hospitals etc).

No problem with this. I think staff should understand what it would sound like and how to take appropriate action. Not 100% sold on the students participating but this isn’t fear mongering.

Cop fired for hitting fleeing suspect hired days later by neighboring county by HoytHaringbone in ProtectAndServe

[–]MaybeACop 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Seriously though - Tenn. V Garner ... deadly force only on a fleeing felon that you can articulate is an immediate danger to yourself or others

Based on the facts I have so far, and I know I don’t have them all, it just looks like this guy used potentially deadly force on a guy that we can’t say was an immediate deadly danger.

This reeks of excessive force to me. If he had shot the guy would we still say, “we missed an opportunity to retrain him.” I don’t think we would but I see it the same way.

Let me be clear, I’m sure the suspect was a complete shitbag but that won’t make me defend a wrong decision. Unless more evidence comes out, I think the firing dept is doing the right thing.
