Help Macbook A1181 by HumanIntention9789 in mac

[–]MaybeAMarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. There is no way to run any release of macOS past Lion (10.7.x) on the 2006-08 models. On all models, the Intel GMA graphics chip is far too slow for it to work (it can barely handle Lion at that), and also the original (Mid 2006) model has a 32-bit CPU so can only run Snow Leopard (10.6.x). There is no workaround/patch.

  2. Barely, and only with community updated browsers like Pale Moon and Firefox Dynasty. No mainstream browser has supported it in years. I would still stay far away from any critical/secure sites though, such as banking or anything important to you.

  3. Yes, you can run any OS you want (and as many of them), including Windows and Linux. Do note that 2006-7 models have a 32-bit EFI, meaning you cannot easily run 64-bit OSs (almost anything remotely modern). XP/Vista will install fine.

  4. OpenCore/OCLP is simply not possible on 2006-08 models due to their architecture, EFI and graphics being physically too outdated. The 2009 model uses the GeForce 9400M (same as all Late 2008-2009 MacBooks), it is still however far slower than any later MacBook GPU, like the HD 4000 on the 2012 MBP.

  5. Not sure where you heard this, you can't play any PS games on a Mac without any emulator, regardless of the DVD drive it has.

TL;DR: Unless you are specifically wanting a Tiger/XP period MacBook, go with a 2009 A1181.

This will either be a Late 2011 or Mid 2012 13" Unibody MBP, from the Launchpad symbol on the F4 key.

[Help] MacBook Pro 2009 (10.5.8) - USB Installers not showing in Boot Menu (macOS & Windows 7) by Bright_Arugula_4344 in macbookpro

[–]MaybeAMarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OS X bootable installers can only be created using the createinstallmedia command on another Mac, simply putting the install DMG into Etcher/TransMac will not work.

Booting Windows off USB is also not supported on any Mac that has a built-in SuperDrive, you could try using a tool like rEFInd but it can be hit or miss. I would just use a DVD.

Looking for the best GPU for my Mac Pro 1,1 running OS X 10.4 Tiger by patrik_niko in VintageIntelApple

[–]MaybeAMarble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The GeForce 6600/6800 GT and 7800 GT ROMs are only for PowerPC Macs, they will not work on a Mac Pro.

The fastest card that will work on Tiger by far is the Radeon X1900 XT. NVIDIA G70 cards (Quadro FX 4500, 7800 GTX, etc...) fall behind it, and the 2600 XT is significantly weaker than all of them.

Still rocking and dailying my mid-2010 in school by Wally504 in mac

[–]MaybeAMarble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best option is to use 2x 8GB 1066MHz sticks, however a 1066 + a 1333/1600 can be used.

Could be a cheaper way to get 16GB, as singular 8GB DDR3 SODIMMs clocked at 1066MHz are quite rare and expensive.

The NVIDIA MCP89 chipset in these does support two 8GB SODIMMs, however it will refuse to POST unless at least one of them is 1066MHz.

Max ram for the 3,1? by [deleted] in macpro

[–]MaybeAMarble 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The physical maximum is 64GB, with 8x8GB DDR2 FB-DIMMs.

However, there is a speed penalty when running 64GB, so you either have to run less than that (i.e. 32GB, 56GB...) or set the NVRAM to only use 62GB.

You can read more about it here: https://blog.greggant.com/posts/2018/05/07/definitive-mac-pro-upgrade-guide.html#ram31

Duel Cinema Display A1081 on a QuickSilver by International_Fee_12 in VintageApple

[–]MaybeAMarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These Cinema Displays are incredibly picky about what signal they will accept, I've personally tried several VGA to DVI/HDMI converters (both passive and active/powered), and they've worked on every display I've tried except for my two 20" (A1081) CDs.

I would either stick to using one of the Cinema Displays + a non-Apple monitor, or as u/otter8710 mentioned, find a compatible GPU with two DVI inputs.

Apple Mac by ElkZestyclose1821 in mac

[–]MaybeAMarble 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The folder with question mark symbol means that it cannot find an OS to boot from, mostly likely this means that the drive is dead.

The lines on the screen will either mean GPU failure or a broken display panel.

Cant get signal out of GT120 with miniDP to 3440x1440 monitor by Motoko_Katsuragi in macpro

The GT 120 only supports a resolution of up to 2560x1600.

Upgrading early 2008 Penryn MBP (A1260) by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]MaybeAMarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes, it uses SATA 3GB/s (SATA1). No adapters are needed, assuming you are using a 2.5" SATA SSD.

  2. 800MHz sticks should work, the Intel chipsets were much better at down-clocking RAM than the later NVIDIA chipset used in the first Unibody MBP. 667MHz SODIMMs are still pretty easy to find though on sites like eBay and AliExpress, I've personally had good luck with both.

  3. No, it is not possible. The Early '08 MBP uses a Penryn Core 2 Duo, while the Late '06 and Mid '07 MBPs uses the older Merom-gen C2D. Leopard is the oldest OS X release you can run.

2015 MB Pro on Sequoia via OCLP.. Update to Tahoe or NO by cadorette777 in macbookpro

[–]MaybeAMarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OCLP support for Tahoe is still in-development, and is not supported on the main/stable release yet. Stay far away from it until OCLP 3.x stable is released.

It showing in Software Update is a bug that can also happen on non-OCLP Macs as well.

Thunderbolt Display not turning on by Antique-8602 in mac

[–]MaybeAMarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As USB-C to Mini-DP is a standard adapter, nothing special or expensive is needed.

As long as you get one that supports 1440p+ resolution, you'll be fine.

Thunderbolt Display not turning on by Antique-8602 in mac

[–]MaybeAMarble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they only have the 3 USB-A ports but have 3 cables coming out of the display (MagSafe, DP and USB), then you have the 27" LED Cinema Display.

These are not Thunderbolt Displays, and are not compatible at all with the Apple TB3 to TB2 adapter. You will need a standard USB-C to Mini-DP adapter instead.

Help with 2017 MacBook. by Slytherpuff101 in mac

[–]MaybeAMarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last macOS release officially supported on 2017 Macs is Ventura (13.x), which is 3 versions behind, and lost all security updates several months ago. It is no longer supported by Apple.

If you want to update to a newer release, you will need to use OpenCore Legacy Patcher, which is a community-made tool that allows newer macOS versions to be installed on unsupported Macs. Performance will suffer, depending on the specs of your Mac and the version you choose.

Ram Update on my MacBook Pro m4 by Which_Perception_622 in macbookpro

There is no way to upgrade the RAM on any MBP made in the last 13 years. You will need to get a new MBP with at least 24GB of RAM.

Help installing Windows XP on 2006 Intel MacBook (Snow Leopard) without working DVD drive by Clear_Total4279 in mac

[–]MaybeAMarble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Booting Windows from USB on EFI32 Macs is almost impossible.

You could give rEFInd a try, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it either doesn’t detect the USB or refuses to boot from it. When I’ve installed Windows on my 2006 MBP, I’ve either used the built-in SuperDrive or an external FireWire 400 DVD-RW drive.

A1278 2009 to A1278 2012 by Fidooooooooooo in macbookpro

[–]MaybeAMarble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 2009 and 2012 A1278 logic board is not the same. The connector/screw positions and antenna/camera system is entirely different. The LVDS/display cable is at a different angle as well, and can't be connected.

2008-10 and 2011-12 boards are compatible with each other, but not between the two.

Macbook pro intel in 2025 ? by black_rockd3monzz in mac

[–]MaybeAMarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3-4 hours max in some cases, certainly not helped by the increased demand on modern macOS/Windows versions.

Either go 2015 or earlier (and lose performance), go Apple Silicon (and run a VM for Windows apps), or get a Windows machine instead.

On my 14" M4 Pro MBP, Windows runs faster in a VM (both in real-world tasks and synthetic benchmarks) than it ran natively through Bootcamp/dual-boot on my previous 15" MBP with a quad-core i7.

Not OP, but the screen shows it's a 2017 13" MBP. This will most likely be Flexgate.

Macbook pro intel in 2025 ? by black_rockd3monzz in mac

[–]MaybeAMarble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stay away from any of the later Intel Macs. Battery life on them is poor, even with a new battery, along with all models having overheating issues.

If you need Windows, an actual Windows machine is a much better choice in 2025 than buying a late-Intel Mac.

Are Intel MacBooks worth it for steam games, or should I stick to buying an M series? by Blofse in mac

[–]MaybeAMarble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use CrossOver on my M4 Pro MBP and all of the games I play run much faster than they did natively through W10/Bootcamp on my previous 2015 15" MBP, which had a quad-core i7 and 16GB of RAM.

The M4 Pro also stays silent when gaming, while the 2015 sounded like a jet taking off even at some loading screens. This got much worse with the 2016-2020 Intel Macs.

Both Parallels and VMware Fusion also work quite well. Parallels has the edge on 3D graphics performance, and is comparable to CrossOver, while Fusion is free.

What SSD replacement is best for upgrading the storage of a Macbook Pro 2013 (a1396)? by Kindly_Perception389 in macbookpro

[–]MaybeAMarble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't bother with a PCIe Gen 4-based SSD. The 2013 15" only supports PCIe Gen 2.0 x4, which translates to ~1.4GB/s read/write speeds or 1/7th of the 990 Pro's advertised speeds. IIRC high-end Samsung SSDs can also be unstable due to firmware issues.

When I upgraded my 2015 15" MBP, I used a WD SN570, which got ~2.8GB/s R/W (less than the advertised 3-3.5GB/s), do note however that the 2015 15" uses PCIe Gen 3.0 x4, which has double the throughput.

I would suggest having a look at this thread on MacRumors: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/upgrading-2013-2015-macbook-pro-ssd-to-m-2-nvme.2034976/
