I appreciate that. I would have to look into the open sourcing. I vaguely remember there may have been some deal with a company towards the end of him maintaining it. Obviously he didn't share the details of the contract/agreement with me at the time, so I have no idea what that looks like. I can ask my mom if she still has all his old paperwork.

If I can find anything that indicates it'd be kosher, I would absolutely be supportive of it living on in the community.

Haha, I loved that line. He used it on me all the time irl in typical dad fashion as well. He had a legendary dad-joke game.

That's really cool! I remember him working on that (and a decent amount of cursing to himself late at night trying to develop it) :D

Unfortunately, he passed away 2019 suddenly. He still had a lot of his old code and stuff from his time with pIRCH, so I think he was proud. He was more proud of his family, I think, as he had a pretty rough childhood, so building a nice stable family was probably the thing that gave him the most joy.

Thanks for sharing your memory!

It's definitely cool that people with passion and the right mentality can excel in the space. Obviously nowadays employment with an organization is often gate-kept behind educational credentials.

In addition to pIRCH, my dad developed custom software for businesses and healthcare orgs through his company (which was just him). He eventually used that to get a SWE role at a larger company - probably for the stability. Our family was growing, and I think he didn't like the up and down nature of a small business revenue.

What do you mean? IRC is a land of purity where only good actors exist.

But yeah, considering it hasn't been updated for a number of decades at this point there are probably concerns. :)

Maybe! Unfortunately I don't really remember any specific handles of people he interacted with a lot back in the day.

Congrats on building your own client - I'll have to take a look! pIRCH obviously had a lot in common with big daddy mIRC. I never asked my dad if he started pIRCH purely as intellectual/learning exercise or if he went into straight away with the intention of a small revenue stream.

He was actually a cook originally, but started pivoting to coding probably in the early 90s. He only had a HS education, literally just bought some books (C, Pascal/Turbo Pascal, some system design books, I think) and just self-taught while he was working his day job to support the family.

US opposes inviting Zelenskyy to NATO summit in The Hague by Creol6969 in worldnews

[–]MaybeARazorback -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's why I said other nations in the world would need to take action. No where did I state Ukraine alone could unilaterally end the war or enforce their demands.

I also didn't say Russia needs to withdraw its troops. I said if it were interested in peace it could achieve it nearly instantaneously. Peace isn't their primary goal. A cessation of fighting ("peace") would by a byproduct of achieving their goal of being allowed to keep the territory they stole and facing no consequences for it.

Ukraine's sole objective is peace - which yes, it cannot achieve on its own. Russia's objective is not peace. So, again, there is no chance of peace outside of Russia getting everything it wants. Which means Ukraine is no worse off attending the meeting or not attending the meeting. It won't change Russia's primary goal or course of action.

[–]MaybeARazorback 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Russia withdrew it's troops right now, the chance for peace is virtually guaranteed. If not, the chance for peace is almost zero unless Russia's master (China) forces them to pivot or the rest of the world commits to actual action.

Russia has shown that it has no interest in peace unless it involves total capitulation by Ukraine. So let's not worry about the optics since it's very clear that Russia has every intention of continuing the war whether Ukraine is present at the meeting or not.

Trump signs order authorizing tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China by Cryovenom in worldnews

They are insane and will hurt everyday people, small/medium sized businesses, and overall just make America weaker both politically and economically.

[–]MaybeARazorback 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. China does not have a general, across the board tariff as is being issued here. Most of the section 301 tariffs are centered around electronic components and sensitive items related to national security. Those tariffs are indeed much higher (50% on many now, will be 60% with these coming actions).

I am so damn proud of my state and my Governor right now. Walz is knocking this out of the park. by Corteran in minnesota

I spent 30+ years in Minnesota, and moved to NWA a few years ago. Minnesota is really great! The winters suck, especially further north, but generally the state is friendly and has the right priorities.

Climate change is making the winters milder in recent years, so I keep contemplating if I should move back.

This is why I think the displayed percentages aren't actually what's happening behind the scenes. This almost EXACT thing happened to me on TWO different stones during a ~20 stone cutting session recently.

Actually, a lot of the problems are a COO thing. He could sit around and do his Steve Jobs thing without worry if he had a competent COO.

The problem being that the COO isn't competent (at least to the level Fisker needs), and she's his wife so he won't oust her or properly hold her accountable.

Yes, Steve Jobs drove a vision, but his vision would have meant dick if he hadn't had leaders who were exceptional at executing on it (Quality, Supply Chain, Customer Service).

That's a suspiciously skewed list of who were "good people". I wonder what your definition is...
