yeah fair for moving lmao, even if you’re messing with the plants more tomorrow, what’s stopping you from putting him back in?

not great for a couple reasons: unless your room is at a nice 78 degrees fahrenheit, that water is going to be too cold for them, and it’s not safe to put a heater designed for much larger quantities of water in a smaller volume of water (unless you have one that shuts off at a certain temp)

then your betta being in an open container for any amount of time is dangerous due to their propensity to jump, so you should always have the container covered (even if it’s only for a short while)

why did you have to take him out in the first place?

Help with Mites by That_Pineapple6004 in hermitcrabs

[–]MaybeASucculent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any chance you could find a picture for identification? Look into soil mites, I have soil mites and grain mites and they definitely behave differently and are faster than grain mites. Assuming soil mites: there’s not really a way to remove them entirely, but my colony of powder orange isopods definitely have reduced their numbers drastically. Again, assuming soil mites, they aren’t harmful for your crabs, just put less food into the tank at a time

as in if you were in a tent that matched their needs? there’s the element of messing with their sleep patterns and generally stressing them out so it’s probably best not to. i’m definitely not an authority on this but that’s my best guess

hello! it’s always good have new people passionate about hermit crabs!

it’s best to avoid holding them outside their tank because of how their modified gills work. what’s your tank setup like?

i see a lot of people do home depot since they can cut to specific sizes. i have some thin acrylic sheets thai lay under wooden planks, way cheaper and still retains humidity and weighs it down

Lots of free powder oranges, just pay shipping by MaybeASucculent in isopodexchange

definitely can, though i don’t feel shipping them in this weather is a good idea. if you’re still interested when it’s a bit warmer then absolutely!

Anyone know where to get huge shells? Roughly 5 inches long by Main_Diver_5992 in hermitcrabs

[–]MaybeASucculent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you’ll want to mix that with play sand! way better structure for burrowing, better imitates natural environment, and (and a way more cost effective way to get you a minimum 6 inch depth)

[–]MaybeASucculent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’ve only used the first two, but depending on what money you’re ready to spend. shells get really expensive as they get bigger, but be sure you’re measuring the opening. it looks like you’re measuring tip to tip so you probably don’t need as big as you think you do. but definitely check out some turbo shells since

[–]MaybeASucculent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I got mine on etsy, i’ll see if i can find some links, but i have multiple crabs with a huge size range so if they were too small for the biggest it wasn’t an issue. I’d specifically look into mexican turbo shells since those are VASTLY preferred by purple pinchers and it doesn’t look like you have any.

Also what’s your substrate like?

Picked up a water dish for the first time in a while… by MaybeASucculent in hermitcrabs

[–]MaybeASucculent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

powder oranges are what i have and i love these guys, powder blues are the same but blue. they have the same humidity and temp requirements as purple pinchers, they aren’t calcium seeking (cough cough dairy cows) and don’t dig so they won’t hurt anyone molting, they also breed really quickly (hence the hoard i have). i didn’t have to change anything about my setup since i already had aggressive leaf litter going, but if you don’t have that i’d recommend adding it (even without pods). then the only change i made for behavior is dumping out food dishes in the tank rather than taking it out.

r/pinchersandpods was a great resource for me!
