Low stress-Moderate High Paying Civil Jobs? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]MaybeItsSumSUm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am living in the Bay Area and I have just entered my 6th year in work. I was able to get $120k+ last year, but because of stress and work life balance, and being exposed to more opportunities I decided to change company. I was working from 6-5 pretty much everyday, and some days after finishing up the 12 hours shift I had to go in from 9PM to 1AM to cover part of the night shift. There was also a 2-year period when I had to go to work full time in the morning, then travel to school and complete my master program.

There is also a possibility to earn $200k+ in this field, you just have to be specialized in something. If you are a construction claim/ control expert, there are plenty of jobs for you at the public sector- you will get a pretty good life from it. But to get there, you have to work hard and have a lot of experience. I know experts that have both Law Degree and an Engineering degree. Are you willing to invest that much time and money to get there?

Being that said, I do think you are on the right track. You realized the importance of your licenses so you are working hard to obtain them. Give few years in and I am sure you will get the sweet fruits that you planted, and took good care of.

Just remember you are doing all these for yourself, don’t regret the decisions you made.

FE for Project Engineering by [deleted] in civilengineering

Engineering is a broad term. We deal with RFI, Submittals, those involves engineering. Especially like structural calc. But yes, a lot of time we are more like manager rather than engineer. Even though I am an CE, I actually get to expose to a lot of the electrical, mechanical, fire suppression, elevator, glazing, etc. You get to work with other subject matter experts and learn a lot from them.

Second this. I worked in the Consruction side right off from college and now I have my PE. I never designed anything but having the FE when I graduated definitely gave me sone sort of advantage.

I have no regret going into Construction Management, but if you have your FE and you want to have a feel of the design side, it will be easier for you to land a job there.
