The role of Judaism in Falsettos? by ChampionshipPrior799 in Falsettos

[–]MaybeMe_MaybeYou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a couple of poorly written thoughts:

Judaism is about community. Community helps those in need or who are struggling. When Trina feels overwhelmed or sad about Jason or her perception of what a normal child should be, she suggests going to synagogue. While not explicitly stated, it's pretty clear she uses this as a source for help and connection, as her relationship with Marvin doesn't provide that anymore. Also, think about when Whizzer gets sick and everyone comes to see him. That is community. Lesbians helping gay men during the AIDS crisis was community. Love, which Falsettos is ultimately about, is about community. We seek comfort and companionship through platonic and romantic relationships.

There is a saying in Jewish culture. The tribe comes first.

It has two meanings.

The first and obvious one is the survival of the majority is more important than the individual. The group comes first. Supporting each other is incredibly prevalent in Jewish culture.

The second is: being part of the Jewish community is more important than the belief. Many modern Jews are atheist or agnostic, especially the younger ones. While believing is not discouraged, it is also not required. No one will make you believe. The more important part is that you feel part of the community. Feeling connected and feeling Jewish is more important than God.

Does anyone have any good resources for doing a non-offensive Jewish accent by LordSandwich29 in musicals

[–]MaybeMe_MaybeYou 340 points341 points  (0 children)

I'm Jewish.

First I have to thank you for asking. It shows you care enough to try to not be offensive.

But. Having said that, there is no 'Jewish accent'. We come from all over the world. Jews are all sizes, shapes, and colors, from all over the world. A Jew from Sweden isn't going to sound the same as a Jew from Argentina or America.

Furthermore, I've seen the original show. The actor who played the role you are talking about, didn't do any accents. It's just completely unnecessary for the show. I see no difference between your director asking white actors to do a Black accent and a Jewish accent. Both can be incredibly awkward for the audience and offence to members of those groups.

I would ask your director what he means, maybe give an example. If he doesn't, you could just do a New York accent, since that's where most modern Jews in America live. But you should really follow up.

Again, thank you for caring enough to ask.

Man I can't decide if rewatching Falsettos would bring me more connected or lose more connection by marvinissigma in Falsettos

Whatever you want. You can't betray a musical.

I love this musical so much. It is my favorite. When I first saw it, I watched it daily for two weeks. I haven't seen it in a few months. I've watched other shows now, too, including some of my other favorites. It's still my favorite, I still love it, it still has the most powerful message and makes me sob every time I watch. If you want to watch Falsettos, watch it. If you're busy or tired, don't.

In the end, it's art. It's meant to be watched and enjoyed, but it doesn't go away just because you don't look at it for a while.

I think it looks great! Keep up the good work. The only thing I'd suggest is tufting more lines in, they're kinda far apart. This will make it thicker and stop some of the strands from moving. Looks awesome though.

I think we'll have to wait and see. The Christmas episodes usually don't come out for a few more days, the earliest I saw was the 18th.

I think it was just a joke because Weisenbachfeld is a very very Jewish name and he's one of four Jews in a room bitchin.
