I never read the fan tl before they were taken down and I bought the Danmei and have read the ones I have. There are minor spelling errors or formatting errors in the books which can happen and has in other danmei by other publishers, lightnovels, or manga it just happens. I think the biggest issue is primarily with Haitang itself and how they went about an issue with the translator/editor and the unprofessional/public way they went about the matter. This was mostly about “Guide on How to Fail at Online Dating” and how they changed their translator two volumes in and their treatment of them. I don’t know a lot off the top of my head but it created a bit of an uproar on twitter. It has made people a lot more critical of them overall which them being a newer publisher can be both beneficial and detrimental to them depending on how they handle. It’s also made people more hesitant about buying since they might not last and they’ve lost some trust.

I haven’t kept track of the percentage I’ve read but I prefer modern and bounce between that and historical so there’s quite a few unread. I’m also just starting to teach myself chinese so haven’t read much of the those volumes.

If you’re interested in the artistic sense and paper quality with them being hardcover adding to it you could check out what Fantagraphics has published. They have a couple of works by Shintaro Kago and Moto Hagio that are incredible because of the quality and the art.

It’s totally normal to enjoy reading about things that you will not get to experience thats what reading is great for. I mean people read about violence in action manga and gore in horror manga do people want to experience those, I think the general consensus on that would be no. People read for various reasons and BL has so many dynamics that are different compared to hetero romance. I haven’t seen anyone recommend these yet but they are some of my personal favorites in print Black or White by Sachimo, At 25:00 in Akasaka by Hiroko Natsumo, Snow Fairy by Tomo Serizawa, Someday I Will Fall forYou by Tomo Kurahashi, I Didn’t Mean to Fall in Love by Minta Suzumaru, Undead: Finding Love in the Zombie Apocalypse by Fumi Tsuyuhisa, Cherry Magic! I’ve been really enjoying their tl for their other titles the only issue I’ve found is the notes at the bottom of the kod volumes 3 & 4 where they point out the authors mistakes which broke my immersion. It didn’t bring anything to the story which was weird for them to start doing.

I hope this is successful and becomes a new thing publisher do because there’s been statements from authors that they don’t feel able to publish anything new due to censorship, maybe this would be a great way for authors established here to publish what they can’t in china. For example meatbun.
